Here's a picture of the ottoman I mentioned yesterday. The top is a Turkish rug. The leather I got really cheap from the scrap bin of a large leather company (I paid $45 for the whole hide at Portland Leather). In the end it was about the same price as a new ottoman from a good store would have cost. The rug still has the fringe intact, tucked inside the ottoman so when the ottoman eventually wears out someone will still have a nice small rug in perfect condition.
The rug the ottoman is sitting on is a 40 year old Persian "Viss" rug made with vegetable dyes that literally shines in the right light. It's in mint condition - which is not at all unusual for old Persian rugs.
Persian families often store rugs for years the way we keep money in a bank. I had one rug from 1935 that was in mint condition.
Check Craigslist before you check Ebay for rugs.
With Craigslist at least you can see them in person first.
