Scavenger: New Thonet Chairs for $100

2004_12_13_chairs.jpgScavenger score. Last week as we were culling Craigslist, we came across 4 Thonet chairs for $100. Rather than listing them (Ha!) we called the owner immediately.

Matthew lives in Harlem and left to fly home to Europe last night. The last thing he did was hand over these four sweet chairs. After two long train rides up to 125th street and back, carrying 4 chairs, we settled down on the kitchen floor to clean them.

2004_12_13_chairs (1).jpgThey were gross. But after an hour and a half of scrubbing them down with Murphy's Oil soap and warm water (our bucket of water turned black), they were a shade lighter and looking more beautiful than ever.

Now they need some dark stain touch up where the wood has worn away and a finishing touch of lemon oil to get them glossy again. MGR

With you on the train with those chairs, it must have looked like the touring company of Cabaret. Or rehearsal for something Fosse.

p.s.-- It's also oddly reassuring, that even given your small space and apparent discipline about belongings and clutter, you are susceptible to a tempting deal!
