10-06 Navy Chair by Norman Foster & Partners

11-1-emeco.jpgDWR gets another scoop. This one comes courtesy of Emeco, who is releasing 500 chairs - an update on the classic 10-06 Navy Chair - seen through the eyes of the Foster mafia. Our opinion? Hey, they look pretty nice but a bit antiseptic. We still have a thing for Gehry's kooky Emeco chair.

You can order them this month, but they don't arrive until Jan. Here's the pitch (no idea of pricing yet):

The sleek new chair features an ultra-slim, all-aluminum frame, tempered for strength and hand-made at the historic Hanover Pennsylvania factory using Emeco’s proprietary “77 Step Process”. The ergonomically shaped aluminum seat and back are hand-welded, resulting in a minimal, seamless appearance and slight irregularities due to the handmade nature. '20-06' is super-strong, yet uses 15% less aluminum than the original Navy ® Chair. Of that metal, 80% is recycled aluminum, qualifying as an environmentally sound product.

I don't like that they are too sterile for my taste and the $480 price tag they most likely are going to carry. I saw a limited edition version made by Emeco's guys with exposed rivets (a la 1950's aluminum plane panels), really nice but they are going to make it a limited edition and also a $100 more.
i like the Navy Emeco in general for what it is (industrial appliances) but when I'm paying $370 for a chair, I don't want welding points exposed at the slats on the back of the seats. They should be ground off. I even have a conversation with Gregg Buchbinder about this issue.

I prefer them because of the ultra slim legs; I like to see a barstool with this profile.

oh, and one more thing! it's the 20-06, not 10-06. 10-06 is the regular navy chair (as seen on house, law and order, irobot, et al)

I have #19/500 of the first edition of the Gehry chair for sale (bought from DWR). I've been meaning to post it for sale for some time now... I'll consider any serious offer by email. It's in great shape but with two tiny black rubbings that would easily come off with goo gone, etc.
