AVL Shaker Chair

6-16--shaker2.jpg

We are color whores. Lately, whenever we see a brightly colored chair or table or cabinet, we just LIKE it. Even after we realize that we wouldn't quite put it in our home, we still like it. That is the case with the new AVL Shaker Chair by Joep van Lieshout.

Inspired by the Shakers, van Lieshout's design company AVL started a free state, AVL-Ville, in 2001 in the port of Rotterdam where they have relied on self-sufficiency to generate their designs. These chairs and tables were designed for the community and brought into larger production by MOOOI. Now DWR and Unica has stolen their fire and brought them across the pond. $198 from DWR, Unica Home.

the proportions seem odd to me -- the chairs back is rather short compared to the seat length, and low for the table. and the red reminds me of all the times i've been in a store full of chinese goods and wished chinese people liked orange more and red less.

but lately i tend to pick up things which are brightly colored from sheer relief that at the sight of saturated color in north america.

This is too simple to be so pricey.. I brought a table very much like this one - in blue - for $30 at a local swap shop. Really, I should collect stuff here in the deep south (SC) and bring it up there to sell..

I could slap a fancy foreign name on it and pay off my beach house in days..

I'm sure the Amish would really like to sell you a table like that for a lot less than $5k.. They wouldn't know what to do with all that money... LOL! But to pay loot like that for a Amish look-a-like, I think would be totally CRAZY, would it not?

I saw these chairs at DWR the other day and really like them. I, too, would prefer them in another color, not so much because of anything like rasil's comment but because this shade of red paired with the general low-slung look reminds me too much of that eames chair everyone has (which i also like and think is quite nice, but omigod people there are other chairs out there in other colors).

and yeah, this is another expensive designer piece that spawned, "oh, i could fake that same look so cheaply..." in my mind like the Bas cabinet from the other day. Which i see as a good thing, actually. nice to know simple shaker style furniture can look this modern and elegant.

I just painted a cabinet this color. I initially wanted a darker red color, but could not come by it in enamel, so it ended up this shade of red ("Safety Red" actually)

I haven't put the gold pulls on yet, and that may end up making it a bit garish, but we'll see.

I don't mind the red but that fall over backwards look would drive me crazy
The prices are also not of this earth
