Leather Club Chair Roundup #1

This past week, we checked out a number of club chairs in order to see which one would be right for a client. Though there ARE others, this is our first roundup of four chairs. If you have recommendations for others, please add it in the comment thread.

Room & Board Ian Chair ($1249): Thumbs up!

The super soft oversized Ian is a good choice for those who want to feel like they’re being enveloped in a club chair. Although comfortable, this chair is exceptionally deep and may cause some feet to dangle. The chair’s good looks pull it through.

Crate & Barrel Bryan Chair ($1899): Thumbs up!

CB's Bryan chair has that great 50’s styling, but more importantly fits the bill for comfort. The back and seat cushions are nice and not too soft. A good arm height lends itself to a good casual sit. The back is a little too pitched, but we didn’t mind that as it added a lot to the design. Congrats, CB!

Pottery Barn Manhattan Chair ($1459): Thumbs Down!

PB’s Manhattan chair is anything but Manhattan in our book. A clunky arm and back that’s too pitched creates a clumsy sit. Although comfort is entirely subjective I’d say this was the least comfortable chair as it was also too soft and squishy. The over scaled arm was too high. Sorry PB...

Ralph Lauren Graham Chair ($2599): Thumbs up!

This nicely scaled club chair from Ralph is a good balance between style and comfort. Although a little soft, the seat was quite comfortable..not too deep either. For those who want a stylish, urban and comfortable club chair this choice is for you. Although a little more expensive than its competitors, it’s worth the price. Good job, Ralphie boy!

How about the Nolan chair from Mitchell Gold? Crate & Barrel briefly carried it a few years ago, but discontinued it shortly after its debut. I would love to find somewhere in Chicago that carries this now as it was quite stylish and comfortable.

The Door Store's (seemingly) never-ending 2 chairs for $1000 is the "Best Bang for the Buck" in club chairs.

We've had our pair for 2 years and they still look new and are comfortable. We use them every day. Qualtiy-wise, I'd say they're comparable to the ~$1400 club chairs that are available all over town.

I'd take a look at Bo's Boston chair.

Jennifer leather has a dark brown club chair and ottoman set that goes on sale periodically for just under $300. If you can stand the long wait and potential "typical Jennifer" complications to the sale, it's actually a great chair. Very comfortable and durable with straight line arms and a deep chocolate color. One of the arms detatches to make it very light and portable - no worrying about getting it up winding NYC brownstone stairs.

Take a look at the "Milano Espresso and Mocha club chair at Target. It's a super deal (and elegant) for the money. All the reviews gave it a big thumbs up.

I'm rather partial to the Mitchell Gold armchairs, too, especially the Elliot, which isn't as bulky as most club chairs tend to be. (I also love that Mitchell Gold himself treats his factory employees well by providing a/c and on-site daycare.)

The RL chair is gorgeous, however when I priced it recently I learned the $2500 price did not include fabric. Plan on paying a huge supplement.

A friend of mine owns a great leather couch and chair manufactured by Zocalo, and I know that they have a few attractive club chair models. Here in Chicago they are carried by Domicile and Roy's. Their leather items are wonderful quality, very reasonably priced and the pieces I've seen all have spectacular lines. Construction and comfort are tops as well. Zocalo doesn't have much web presence but it's well worth the search.

i own the manhattan chair and ottoman from PB. Most people don't know that Mitchell Gold designs the furniture for PB, which i think is funny.

the pitch is a bit off, but it makes for a great nap chair. i rather like it in cognac leather, it wears well (shows the cracks and repeated wear). I'm here to defend it.

Thank you for this round-up, Maxwell! This is really useful information. Do any of these come with ottomans?

Regards.

Side seaming.

Just a head's up that side seaming of leather (like on the Ian) is one indicator of not-as-good-as-it-could-be quality. A clean side, made with larger skins is usually easier on the eyes.

Mitchell Gold may design for Pottery Barn, but PB's furniture is overpriced junk. I know because I live with it.

Never again.

That Deco Chair is comely!

Room and Board is great. I have three pieces from them. Just simple honest designs. The R&B weekend outlet has really good deals.

Scott--
"A clean side, made with larger skins is usually easier on the eyes."

But harder on the wallet, no, since they have to use fewer-- and more perfect-- skins?

My comfy club chair came from Crate & Barrel (via, I think, MG). I love it. Can't stay awake in it.

ps-- Scott-- If I've not said it in awhile, your stuff at eboniste is outrageously sexy and gorgeous.

Thank you for the kind words.

i like the stylings, I'm afraid the color is as shocking as it appears here:

could be the lighting though.

by the way that art deco chair fritz is stunning. How do get a hold of it. There's no pricing info on the site.

Dania's "Bogart" chair is very deco and very club. The price is
nice too, just $499, and you can either get black, or brown bycast. I have one in my bedroom, next to my 65 year old vanity with a four foot round mirror, and it complements it very well. Very thirties. I think they wear forever, being leather and nicely constructed. Decogal.

Addition to "Bogart" chair, the arms are very rounded, almost like a parabola chair, though not quite as steep. The arms do curve all the way to the floor, and it makes a Great Art Deco statement.
