NY Good Questions: Where Can We Find This Couch?

4.28couch.jpgDear AT,

We're looking for a couch - comfortable enough for both of us to lay and watch TV, take naps on, but also attractive to look at (we like mid-century modern - couch w/ legs).

We're still debating on whether to get a sleeper for our visitors or just a regular sofa.

8' will be an ideal length for us since our room is 15'x15'...

Problem is our entry door clearance is only 26'.

Maximum width if we ever want to take out the doors (which we're trying to avoid at this point) is 30'.

So that pretty much limits our selections. Price is also a factor. We're limiting our budget to around 2K max.

We've been looking every where : MGBW, Crate and Barrell, CB2, Room and Board, ABC, but nothing really jumps out.

I found this picture in Domino magazine. Do you know where the sofa is from?

Or maybe you can point us to a similar couch with the above criteria. Thanks! S&B

You say you've been to cb2; however, this looks exactly like cb2's Movie sofa, which is 26" in height and nominally 7 feet in length. I think it fits your needs.

have you considered the Ikea Tylosand sofa?

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S39819293 or

I have it in white with the guest-bed-option. The white fabric doesn't seem to be sooo durable so I might recommend the washable sand-colored fake-suede version instead. It is *extremely* comfortable for lying down on to watch TV and also for sleeping. It's also quite stylish from the back, which is important if you don't have it up against the wall. It also fits in perfectly with MCM decor.

You won't have problems getting it in the door because it is delivered unassembled. (only the flat bottom platform is assembled, the rest is just pillows and chrome supports)

If you see the right sofa don't let the door clearance issue stop you, since you're going to be spending a lot of time there and want it right. An oversized sofa can be disassembled and reassembled in situ without much drama. We used Z Brothers, following a recommendation in Manhattan Users Guide. Family firm, doing it for years and they were excellent. We paid around $200 for a job that involved disassembling a full sofa bed, stripping the upholstery and frame etc etc and reassembling perfectly. They were done in about 45 minutes. Obviously it's a real cost to factor into your decision, but it's worth it for the right result. Good luck...

Here's the original posting from MUG:

"Big sofa, small hall? You need a sofa disassembler. And a family that's 'been in sofas' for three generations is our pick: Z Bros., 914.769.3839. Joe Zeolla's grandfather used to build sofas and his father started Z Bros. 34 years ago.

A standard sofa breakdown costs in the $250 range. Their work is guaranteed and they're bonded and insured. They do the work in your apartment whenever that's possible, but they also have a warehouse to disassemble and reassemble. If you buy a couch that you know is trouble, you can have it shipped directly to their warehouse. If you buy a couch that you don't know is trouble and it's currently wedged into a staircase, Z. Bros. will make an emergency call (for an additional fee).

One way to avoid S.U.S. (Sofa Uncertainty Syndrome) is to ask the sofa retailer if they will make a "fit call" as it's sometimes known. That means they send someone out to check halls, doorways, and other potential tight squeezes and determine whether the couch will fit. Room and Board, for example, will do a fit call for $30. Z Bros. will also come out for an 'estimate,' as they call it. That's $50, but the fee gets deducted from the final price if you use their service."

As you shop for a couch, don't feel like you're limited because of the size of your entryway. I used this service:

http://www.allfurnitureservices.com/takeapart.html

to disassemble my couch, move it to my new (much smaller) apartment and reassemble. The guys were like little gnomes! Looking at the couch today, you wouldn't even know that they took a power saw to it! The price was reasonable and cheaper than buying a new couch, definitely!

Don't forget when you are looking at the measurements for a sofa it is often from the top of the back to the bottom of the legs (you mentioned you like mid-century modern with legs) and often the legs are removable for just such an occasion.

Good luck with your search.

That definitely looks like CB2's movie sofa, which I have and LOOOOOOVE. It's huge - great for two people lying around, watching TV. It definitely needs throw pillows (as seen in the photo) since it's so deep.

I've got to agree with Absolutmarie: the Tylosand couch from IKEA totally fits the bill. I have the white one too and it's okay for us. I vacuum it when we do the floors and we throw a white blanket over it if we're wearing dark jeans or eating. I didn't really like the feel of the ultra-suede but the couch is definitely comfy for two people watching tv!
