Sofa Search by Design Sponge

08.06.sofa.jpg

Modern, comfortable, and affordable. These were the requirements for Design Sponge's own sofa search, which is shown step-by-step here at House and Garden.

The search toured through too-expensive modern designer classics, sleeper sofas for those without a guest room, and even traditional designs. The search zeroed in on Room and Board's Andre sofa for its tufted back, affordable price tag, and slim dimensions (for fitting through narrow doorways).

Design Sponge's search is a help to us all, as pinning down the right sofa can be a challenge. For more sofa help, check out AT's own Top 10: Sleeper Sofas/ Sofa Beds, Top 10: Sofa Stores, and the Room and Board Couch Round-ups Part 1, 2, and 3.

Didn't AT do this, oh, I don't know, TWO YEARS ago?

And arrive at pretty much the same conclusion?

i've found good deals and quality on sofas from downtown furniture in chinatown, and they have a few very similar pieces. from what i've seen, all of the sofas they carry break down so there's not much worry about getting it through the door, and they deliver and put it together for free. worth checking out.

For those with tight spaces check out http://www.divon.com/ . I was searching for months for a couch that could make it up the tight turn and through the narrow door of my apartment. This was the only couch that would fit the bill because it is made to be taken apart as arms and back come of for transport. I considered spending more on a couch I absolutely adored and going the dis-assembly route. But I vetoed that because I rent and will probably move in again and dont think that would be great for the sofa. The Divon frame is made of plywood reinforced with steel and they have a lifetime warranty on unexposed parts of the sofa. The sofas come in many different styles and you can choose from hundreds of fabrics and can add a pull out to most styles. I got an 82 " Exeter with rolled arms with a cocoa chenille fabric for under $900 with delivery included. Its not heirloom quality but I finally have a comfy sofa in my apartment after despairing that I would ever fit one into my apartment.

Vinegar, Downtown Furniture actually carries the Divon line. I was pretty obsessive with my sofa search and went to many different showrooms in the boroughs to try different styles from this line. Also Downtown Furniture has one of the widest selections of those click clack sofabeds from Istikbal and others that I have seen anywhere in NYC.

I also like the Burke from Room & Board - http://tinyurl.com/28pqtc . It doesn't have a tufted back but otherwise I think it looks very sharp. I'm surprised it didn't get a mention...

Has anyone else noticed that the Room and Board sofas are not very deep? I love the Burke and the Jasper, but when I went to try them out, I discovered that they fit me (at 5'3") perfectly, but I doubt my husband will be comfortable on them.

I also love the Petrie, but the story of it not fitting through the door worries me.

you worried about the lack of space and comfort? Considering the compact spacing and the growing influx of new ideally designed rooms, people need to free up some space in their bedroom to accommodate and adhere towards the changing fashion and times.
People have turned towards the new breed of sofa beds for solutions. Wieder leads the call for such innovation and these modern sofa beds may perhaps be the answer most people are looking for. http://www.wiederusa.com.
