The Doc XL: Sofa & Bunkbed In One

11-29-doc1.gifThis just came in from Richard and barely needs explaining, though we've never seen anything like it: The Doc XL. It is exactly what it looks like, and blows the doors off of a regular old sofabed (though ain't great for snuggling couples)...

The Doc XL is a sofa that fiips up into a bunkbed and requires "a simple gesture and no physical strain." You don't even have to take the sheets off of the beds before restoring it to sofa config. It is available through that august outfit, Bonbon Trading, from the UK.

We like anything that requires "a simple gesture and no physical strain."

But oy! The physical strain to schlep it from the UK? Probably not so easy.

But it looks like the person sleeping on the top bunk is sleeping on the under side of a sofa. You know, the part that collects all the dust bunnies. yeck!

Roomy and comfortable while not taking up too much space. Even more surprising is the ease with which the sofa converts into a double bed.Wieder sofas with the innovative I.B.S. Clei Italy makes all these things, and they are available here via various dealers. Many colors and fabrics. Not cheap but not terrible either. Signature Leather in NJ is the cheapest in the NY area.

They've had these in Brazil for a few years and I got to check one out at a home event a few years back. It was comfy as a sofa but did require a bit of muscle to raise. I definitely would consider it if I neded 2 twins instead of a double for guests.

Clever concept. Who knew bunk beds could be design-friendly?

Great design, I hate the look, well unless they have some other models. It reminds me of the sofas at my old dorm's study lounge.

If this thing comes in better fabrics than that God-awful fabric in the pictures...it's a great sofabed!!

@orangejuice - I think it's a COM type deal...so fabric shouldn't be an issue.
