apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

The 2F Folding Chair

When we saw this seat, we had one of those A-ha! moments, as in, "Wow. Why has no one thought of this sooner?". The 2F is a perfectly flat, two-sided folding chair.

"I wanted to keep it very simple, with few mechanical parts, so that when it's flat it looks like a graphic outline more than a chair."

Designed by Hannu Kähönen of Creadesign, the 2F seat is so cleverly designed that it is cut from birch veneer plywood with only the smallest amount of waste and can be stored totally flat.

This means that it is the most efficient folding chair you could possibly have in a small apartment. Kahonen drew his inspiration from the cutting out of paper dolls. It's coming from Martela this Spring. (Via Metropolis)

Very cool...will it cost a fortune?

Wow cool...pretty slim but couldn't a similar chair be made out of plastic at half that size?

half thickness? no way. not out of sheets. wouldn't have the ridgidity. Molded maybe, with ribs for support, but molding it would defeat the purpose.

Price is going to depend upon where its manufactured, volumes, assembly labor as the raw materials should be reletively low.

Of course it's comfortable, Lisa, as comfortable as sitting on a sheet of laminated birch plywood.

I think this chair is fantastic! It must produce very little waste when manufactured!

This site is great at displaying space saving furniture, but absolutely useless at helping potential buyers with information on where to buy and how much to pay.

Spoke to Martela's west coast showroom this morning. Unfortunately, after rigorous testing, "it was decided not to put this product into the commercial line. It has not been abandoned entirely" they said, but don't look for this great concept to be available anytime soon... I guess even laminated birch plywood doesn't hold up structurally...??
