apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Chester Asher + IKEA = Heaven

2004_9_9_ikea.jpgThis just in. Our friends, Stephen and Haidy, have been successfully wrestling with painting and furnishing their new apartment in Chelsea and have come to the Ikea part of the process. Therein lies a great discovery: Chester Asher, who will buy what you want and deliver it to your door for $50. Nuff said? Here is the full review:

I just had to write and tell you about our exciting discovery. After two abortive trips to Ikea (we all know the well known disease called 'Ikea-fatigue' symptoms of which are loss of hair, fuzzy vision and poor tempers, leading to eventual exhaustion) and general tearing our hair out about buying a sofa bed, Stephen and I discovered: Chester Asher.

Chester will go to Ikea for you, buy what you want (you call him to find out when his next trip will be, and then email him the link to the online catalogue of what you want) and then deliver to your door for $50 (Ikea charges $99). He was extremely efficient and nice - in fact he turned up at Elizabeth only to find that what we wanted was out of stock, so drove over to Paramus. wow.

You can reach Chester at: chesterasher@earthlink.net and his phone number is 814.769.9200. He was originally found advertising on Craigslist (Thanks, Craig!), and we found the link HERE. (Thanks, Haidy!) MGR

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand. Why do you need someone to do this for you when Ikea has a catalog? Won't they just deliver what you want?

my understanding is that IKEA charges $100 and this guy does it for cheaper. HTH.

So, Chester's rates have changed: $60 to Manhattan, $85 to Brooklyn.

So I just wanted to add a bit about my recent experience with Chester. One of my items had a mirror in it which broke in transit. We paid Chester for the item which he said he could deliver 2 days later. Now it's been 5 days later and I haven't heard from him. Just keep in mind when a person and not a service is doing this for you, if there are any snags there's no oversight. I may get this cabinet, I may get it in 2 weeks, I may never hear from him again now that he's been paid.

our experience with chester left a lot to be desired. he just didn't show up, after we had it all organized and ready to go (we were paying for two trips, which came to a lot more than he standard quoted amount) which, as we were moving house, was phenomenally inconvienent - living with no furniture for a week until ikea could deliver...

Seems that this Chester had a really good deal going here and he totally blew it by being so shady! Crazy!

Just thought I'd chime in here...

First of all, and most importantly- the last post about me taking $5,000 is COMPLETELY UNTRUE! I have NEVER, EVER collected money from someone before I go to IKEA. I purchase the items first and then am reimbursed upon delivery. *****I would never expect someone to trust a complete stranger with their money (let alone, $5,000!!!).**** I have however purchased items for people and had them disappear when it was time for me to deliver the items. Although it was very inconvenient, at least I had the safety net of being able to return the items to IKEA. ***Please note that the post was made by "BART SIMPSON"!!!***

Second, as for Sara who posted that the mirror was broken and I never showed up for it. I did deliver the mirror about a week later (after my next trip to IKEA, which is when I said I would). I was especially dismayed that Sara did not take the time to correct the post after she recieved the item because she has been a repeat customer. She was happy enough with my service to call me and ask me to deliver items again. I wish she had taken the time to correct the misunderstanding.

Third, about not showing up to a deliver. It is true that I had to reschedule a delivery because of other clients cancelling. When I called the poster above to cancel, he told me that rather than wait till mid-week for me to make anouther trip he would get the items another way. Perfectly understandable that he needed to get the items sooner. I regret that I was not able to get the items to him on time.

I was not going to respond to the post because, as with any business, there are always bound to be a few unsatisfied customers. But I felt, I could not let the hoax by "bart simpson" go unaddressed. Overall I have met a lot of nice craigslisters throught the years providing moving services and I hope to continue in the future!

Sincerely,
chester asher
