"I never really thought pump soap could be sexy until I smelled the hand soap at Norwood, a club in Chelsea..." ~ gochrisgo
Three years ago I did a roundup of the sexiest bathroom soaps I knew of at the time. I started it and then asked for other people's suggestions. The premise? That whether you are in your own home or visiting someone else's, soap is a very personal choice and says a lot about how someone feels about their body, their grooming and, potentially, their sexuality...
Which is to say that someone's soap can send strong "sexy" or "not sexy" vibes to your special guests.
Take, for example, the lovely young woman who has a Dove bar melting in a small pool in her shower. Not sexy, right? How about the cute guy you just met who has Irish Spring in his bathroom. Weird, right?

Is liquid soap sexy? And what ever happened to the Ivory Girl?
Sexyness aside, buying soap is often an unconscious habit and one you don't change very often, so it's worth examining how you are taking care of yourself - if only to perk yourself up in the midst of a long, cold winter. This is from the 8 Step Cure, Week Six:
"If you are not in the habit of soaking with bath salts or buying fine soap, do so this week. Look for natural, perfume-free salts and soap. Remember, the soap you buy will be used each and every day to wash your body, so be sure that you buy a bar that makes you feel good."
This is my best start at a list for 2009. What are the sexiest soaps you know? email me at maxwell@apartmenttherapy.com, put SOAP in the subject header and I'll add it when I post later this week.

• Method Natural Moisturizing Body Bar - For those that want their cleaners to line up with their soaps. Method's light fragrances are really nice.
• Juniper Ridge Coastal Sage - With a distinctive black color, this is Natural with a capital "N": "This is the real smell of California’s coast because this soap is made with real leaves of the Sage plants that blanket the precipitous hillsides of the coastal mountains from the San Francisco Bay region south to Baja California."
• Kiehl's Ultimate Man Body Scrub Bar - Still popular with an oatmeal appearance and the trendy Kiehl's logo
• Olive Oil Soap - I just love the raw appeal of these rough olive bars and they smell and feel good too.
• Cussons Imperial Lather - Found this brown bar in England 20 years ago. Never forgot it.
"No one is disappointed in this soap, it is awesome. In terms of lather, scent, it is unsurpassed. It has been around for nearly 100 years and is still loved by many." ~ Amazon customer review
• Dr. Bronner's Almond Organic Bar Soap - A great scent that still has followers, though some prefer it in a bottle.

From Our Readers:
EVELYN:
I must've been a mermaid in my previous life because I love soaps! In the bath, in the shower, cake of soap in the tray over the sink, you name it. I cannot pass a beautifully smelling bath shop without buying soaps. I'm not a big fan of liquid soap. The cakes I love, because I first use it in the lingerie drawer and after enough time passes, it's used up in the bathroom. The fragrance it leaves as you enter my condo is lovely. Now here are my favorites, probably in the order I love them:
• PEAR's transparent soap and CUSSON's Imperial Leather bring back childhood memories (am, I aging myself?!).
• FLORIS' Edwardian Bouquet.
• CASSELL & MASSEY's Sandalwood, (is the BEST Sandalwood fragrance I know).
• CASSELL & MASSEY's Lily of the Valley, Lilac, English Lavendar and Almond.
• ELIZABETH W's Tuberose and Vertiver.
• NEIMAN MARCUS' Tuberose.
• MOLTON BROWN's Blu Maquis (unfortunately they dont make it in cake, but liquid).
• AVEDA's Refreshing Bar.
AMY IN BROOKLYN:
My favorite is Bliss Soap from Seattle. If you read their website, you'll see they use true soap ingredients, and do not use Lauryl Sulfates. Not only does my skin feel amazing, I don't have any soap scum in my tub! And they smell amazing! Way better than Lush! I stock up on trips to Seattle or have friends bring some for me. I cut them to make them last longer and allows me to have a few in the shower.
• My other favorite is lavender/oatmeal soap from Minetto, NY based SallyeAnder. I want to try their ginger chai soap!
• And last but not least - French Roget and Gallet, Ginger soap is sort of unisex (although I am currently using the R&G Shiso scent).
JACKIE:
I am a huge fan of the soaps from the firm, Claus Porto. I have been using the Pansy soap for many years. It is a beautiful soap- quality, scent and just wonderful bubble bath and lotion.
THE ACADEMIC SOCIALITE:
Any of the Fresh line of bar soaps are very sexy. They are generous, luxurious, and smell terrific!
GOCHRISGO:
I never really thought pump soap could be sexy until I smelled the hand soap at Norwood, a club in Chelsea. It has this amazing grapefruit meets myrrh smell, totally fresh but also smoky sultry. I'd go as far as to say the smell of the soap perfectly compliments the look of the place. I hear it is Molton Brown soap, but I can't figure out which scent yet. The Kiehl's grapefruit pump soap is pretty great too.
I use the Kiehl's scrub soap you wrote about here. I really like it, but it is a bit too scratchy for everyday use. I'm all for exfoliation, but this is a bit too much like sandpaper. I wish they made a non-exfoliating version of this soap.
JACKIE in BROOKLYN:
Thanks for mentioning this about soap. I love a nice bar but all too often soaps melt-a-way or they are way too stinky. (When I was young, my friend and I used to sniff soaps to make ourselves sneeze! What fun that was.?)
Anyway, my choice lately is Kirk's Castile soap. It has a great retro label and is natural. Coconut oil, hypoallergenic, no animal by products and it has a very light scent. Ingredients listed: Coconut soap(what?), water, vegetable glycerin, coconut oil, natural fragrance. Ahh, heavenly.
There was also a soap that I was buying from Sahadi's on Atlantic that was a laurel olive oil soap and was around $1 a bar. It, too, had a clean light scent. But the owner's brother is not importing it anymore...I may check out Kalustyan's to see what they have on an out-of-the-way, lower shelf.
P.S. I buy the soap when I'm visiting my family in Minnesota. I haven't found it in Brooklyn but I think that they sell it at Wegman's.
SARAH:
Soaptopia in mar visat, ca!
JEN BRENNAN:
• Woodspirits Soaps: especially "The Sun & The Sky" and "Pacific Mist"
• Burt's Bees: the Complexion Soaps and Baby Bee Buttermilk Soap (smells heavenly)
• And, my husband Dave's homemade soaps! Pictured are Oat & Honey, Peppermint, and Olive Oil:

Now, *that's* sexy!
LAURA S.:
My favorite, guilty pleasure soap which never fails to make me feel wonderful, sensual and alive is:
L'Occitane de Provence's Verbena shea butter soap. The smell is incredible and the nice rich bubbly lather is also a great pleasure. It's good at all times of day and before or after all sorts of activities. It's good alone or with someone else. Last summer I bought the giant size bar at their annual sale and it lasted a long time and made my bathroom smell good for months just by having it in the shower - I'd walk in and the wonderful soft buttery citrus scent would be there permeating the bathroom. It's a soft sort of pick-me-up. Just creates a good mood and made me feel GOOD. Their shower gel in the same fragrance is lovely as well. But you asked for soap. I hope I can afford another bar soon. There have been many favorite soaps in my past and I'm a real soap-fetishist (is that a word?) -- but this is my current favorite.
KRISTA:
I love soap, an affordable splurge...
My favorites:
• Annick Goutal Eau d'Hadrien
• Lush soaps: Figs and Leaves, Demon in the Dark, Karma
JULOCHKA:
sexiest soap must be Lush's Karma soap. hands down. it's heaven.
LETITIA
Oatmeal with Italian Bergamot or almost any bar soap from LUSH
ROCHELLE IN WA
My #1 is SAIPUA soap!</a> Sarah & Eric run a flower shop in NY and make soap for the shop, wholesale clients & online retail. When I ordered several of their bars online they even included a personal note apologizing for the delay when my shipment (to Seattle) was late in getting sent out. Their soap is an amazing way to start my day (love the Rosemary scented bars) and their packaging is cute enough to keep on hand for hostess gifts or "just because" for friends.
Sarah keeps a blog with photos of her flowers and miscellany from her trips around the NY area and abroad.
BARBARA
Savon de Marseilles - buy anywhere in France - even corner markets. Makes a great lather and has terrific "flavors" including olive oil, lavander, and milk. Heaven on earth!
STACEY
My absolute favorite soap is Nubian Heritage. I have been a faithful user for 5 years. I REFUSE to use anything else. I only use the bar soap but i will keep the liquid soap just in case I have company. I like the Shea Butter and the Black Seed with Apricot & Wild Honey. I've tried their other products (lotions, oils, etc.) but they just don't measure up (Granted that was a while ago. Maybe they've made some improvements). If you live in NYC they have a store in Harlem and another in Brooklyn. If not you can always buy on-line.
MAUREEN
I am a soap acifiondo and it needs to be pure, smell good and also work! The best for men is Bee and Flower sandalwood bar soap, which is forty cents at chinese markets, also available at health food stores.
My personal favorite is Dr. Bronner's liquid peppermint soap, to feel minty fresh:)
ROSALYN
I don't know how sexy it is but I dig Pears. It is healthy glycerin soap priced right.
SAMANTHA
• Pinetar Soap
• Kirk's Castile Soap
DIANNE in AUSTRALIA
I just love 'Lily Savon'from Lush. Now THAT smells sexy!!!
JENNIFER in IOWA

I read your article on soap with a lot of interest! I've been making soap for 11 years and consider handmade, artisan soap a very personal and sensuous product.
I think my Apple & Oats, Oceania, Vanilla Nut, and Sandalwood Vanilla as especially sexy soaps! I'd love it if you took a look: Two Rivers Soaps.
CAITLIN
My friend gives me this soap each year, Sun Stone Soap, and I am always grateful: locally handmade soap in a whooole lotta flavours.
Seriously? I don't want my soap to be sending out any kind of "vibes," especially sexy ones.

I'm in love with Lush 'Porridge' soap, especially during the winter months when I REALLY need to oatmeal for my itchy, dry skin.
Plus it smells like cookies.

i've been known to use Dr Bonners (minty cool in the summertime) and Pears (when i'm broke), but now it's Method... i love the understated fanciness of their "quilted" bars
i can only hope that sends out a "clean" vibe!
view sunan's profile
Why the dis on Dove? Sure the imagery of "melting in a small pool" is gross, but couldn't that apply to any brand? I hope most of you have sexier things to do in the shower than use scented soap...
view firecracker's profile
I love the smell of Pear's. Do y'all use that in the shower, or just for face?
view graefix's profile
I'm a plain old-fashioned Ivory Soap gal - love everything about it, the packaging, smell. etc...
view CJBird's profile
Also, I would not think the "cute guy I just met with Irish Spring Soap" in his bathroom was weird at all. I would not think twice about it because it's So normal, actually.
view CJBird's profile
I have never had a more delicious luxurious soap as
Santa Maria Novella soaps, the 7 oz bar last for a long time..but when I am not in the dream world I use Dove as my dermatologist over the years say its the best soap and my skin has always looked great.
view LoriSF's profile
Totally - the Irish Spring would crack me up! Remember those commercials with the stereotypical Irishman and his knife slicing off a piece of the bar? I might be inclined to convince said cute guy to try something else, but I would still be amused, not weirded out.
view firecracker's profile
I'm with firecracker...any bar of soap could pool and look gross. I use a bodywash and a homemade soap for my face from a friend.
As long as someone is using soap and showering/bathing, I don't care what they're using.

That makes me want to buy a soap scented candle.

My staple bar is Pre de Provence's Honey Almond soap. Super moisturizing, gently exfoliating, and both the bar and wonderful scent are long lasting. The small gift sized version is a real hit with visitors too.
For sheer fun, I love Primal Element's decorative glycerin soaps. Gingerfish is my fave because of the fish design and 7-upish scent. I've even cut thin slices to enjoy on my desk at work.
I hate the intense chemical-y florals and sugary sweet scents of a lot of soaps marketed to women. I love that a lot of mens soaps have great blends of spices, fruits, and herbals that sing out in the shower but don't otherwise plume. A lot of those soaps work well with my staple lotion.

DianaRead- I have found a candle that smells like fresh laundry.
I always thought the were cheesy but the Yankee Candle called Egyptian Cotton, I get the pillar smells so clean. After a scrub my house and burn this candle the place smells like soap or fresh laundered clothes.
Being on a budget I cannot spend 25.00 on a candle these are 10.00 and they last for long long time.

It's all about Adveda's Refreshing Bar. It's the only soap I've used for 15 years. Sexy, fresh, and you just feel so good afterwards.

Bert's Bees for Men! Hands-down the best scent ever.

I'm in love with Indigo Wild products. The Zum bar soaps comes in 33 scents. A couple of my favorites are Sea Salt & Sandalwood-Citrus. I like how the scents really linger in the bathroom. I haven't tried Grapefruit, Lemongrass or Lemon-Basil yet but they sound perfect for summer.
Indigo Wild also sells laundry soap, lotions, mists, diffuser oils, baby, pet products & more. The Zum Rub salves are great for dry feet & elbows.
No, I don't work for the company. I am just a huge fan.

Pacifica makes wonderfully scented soaps (and candles). The Mediterranean Fig is fresh and the Spanish Amber so luxurious. They are, indeed quite fragrant for every day use, but they scent the whole bathroom. Claus Porto are beautifully packaged, luxurious and last forever.

this seems so silly to me.
i mean, i love soaps, but i definitely don't think my choices can be used to analyze every aspect of my personality, nor would i judge someone by something as absurd and trivial as their soap.
i'm overly prickly today, but really.
this just irritated me.

My favorites soaps are from Olivia, and talking about sexy soaps, what else if not Chocorgasm??

I have extremely dry, sensitive, dermagraphic skin, and the only soap I can use is Dove :( every other soap I have tried makes me want to scratch constantly, even when I moisturize afterwards (as I always do). If any other the above posters have the same kind of skin and have found something else that works, I would love to hear about it!
view bookgirl82's profile
I forgot about Pacifica :) They're conveniently found at Borders and work with their coupons too. Mexican Cocoa, Vanilla, and Blood Orange are my current faves. I sometimes rotate unopended bars in my work desk and living room.

I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned Korres' Cedar scented stuff yet. I know it's not bar soap, but their cedar-scented body wash is one of the most amazing scents out there.

Pre de Provence Green Tea.

What's wrong with Dove? It's what I currently use (the purple bar, forget the name, think it's for deep moisturizing) and it works fine and makes my bathroom smell clean and girly. Don't all bar soaps "melt" in the dish - something that a good clean every once in a while can fix? I don't see the point in spending so much on soap..... I couldn't imagine spending $10 on one bar of it!!!!! GASP.
view nyckrissy's profile
I never thought of soap as being sexy or not. We mostly just use soaps we nabbed from hotel rooms, or buy the Whole Foods brand soap.
view heather77's profile
I'm really promiscuous with soap; I like lots of them and switch around a lot. Bar, liquid, gel...like all of them, love some of them, always ready to try something new.
I draw the line at the Irish Spring types; the scent is nasty, the color practically glows in the dark, and has too many harsh/scary ingredients in it for me.

Traveling in the south of France the home of sexy soaps ! The French know how to make soap.
Verbena is intoxicating.

I use a bar of handsoap next to the sink in my bathroom that often seems to go ignored by the consumer: Lava Soap. It's effective on the hands, smells decent, has a SWEET logo (before it wears away, of course) and a nifty green color. Plus, it works tremendously well. It's designed to remove crud from your hands, after all.

I have to agree with Sarah - Soaptopia in Mar Vista is the bee's knees! They have amazing bars, oils and scrubs and everything is natural and non toxic. If you are in LA and go into the store they usually give you a big bag of bar scraps to try, which are perfect for scattering around the house in drawers and cabinets. And they package their gift boxes so well - it's my go-to for any presents for my friends.

I use Body Shop glycerine bar soaps in various flavors...
...but my ex used Irish Spring when we first started dating - He was kinda cute for a while too...
view bepsf's profile
I might be weird gal, but I actually like the Irish Spring smell on a guy... And I use Ivory, liquid or bar. I'm just plain Jane when it come to soap I guess.
But I'm picky about my dishwashing soap! Gotta be Sunlight Green Apple, no other brand will do. Hope they don't discontinue it, I will be crushed.

Pangea Organics; every scent is divine, but I particularly like the canadian pine with white sage. Also, the packaging contains flower seeds so you can plant the boxes in your garden.

For those that like pacifica I tried it because I was in love with the gardenia candle three years ago. I thought the soap left a film and felt it was too waxy. I have hard water so that may explain it. Dove is still the cheapest and the best for hard water. I am very picky about dish soap. I cannot stand the smell of most and find Ivory dish soap the best for hard water and smells clean. I fill my dispenser with half Ivory soap the rest with water and it goes a long way.
I try to stay away from any soap that has color, color means chemicals.

Glad to hear the positive feedback on Soaptopia as I always pass by it on my way to Venice Grind but have never gone in.
Truth be told, since my senses have been savaged by those stupid Lush stores and their overly cloying, perfuming stank wafting out the door to a point where I dread any place that sells perfumes or soaps exclusively.
Looking forward to my future Soaptopia visit and happy to see such great soap recomendations.

I switched to bar soap a while ago on the suggestion that the preservatives in liquid soap were drying the heck out of my hands. It was a good decision! I like soaps that are natural and kind of oily/fatty.
Lush soaps are nice, but a bit pricey for what they are. Demon in the Dark is great, Karma is OK, Honey I Washed The Kids leaves a weird waxy coating on fingernails and stuff.
I just discovered a soap I love, sold at World Market: Four Elements in "Fire," which is a ginger/patchouli scent that combines well with the jojoba in the base. In effect, it's a light spice scent, and it perfumes my bathroom, too, but not in a heavy or intrusive way. $5 for a big chunky bar.
Caswell-Massey soaps have a great shape for hand-washing, or used to. Pure & Natural (sold at Target, etc) isn't fancy in comparison to some others, but is still a nice budget option. I prefer their fragrances to Method's.

I love the method soaps. white tea smells so good. I had a bar of the giovanni soap -white tea also.
for a hand soap my absolute favorite is the bath and body works aromatherapy Stress relief eucalyptus spearmint. the scent is sooo good :) by the kitchen sink we have the energy one- orange ginger.
