Originally made for holding books, barrister bookcases are stackable, glass-front cabinets that can really be used to house all sorts of collections, including books. We've come across used pieces pretty frequently and just spotted The New York First Company, which sells them new online, made to order.
Among the places that offer new barrister bookcases, New York First appears to have some of the better-looking ones. All too often they look too much like office furniture. We like the natural wood and the straight, simple, solid legs of the New York First models.

I felt the need to comment after seeing this post to make a clarification. The New York First Company is just the particular distributor for these bookcases. They (as the ad copy describes) are manufactured by Hale in Frankfort, NY. I grew up right near their original factory in Herkimer, NY (and my master's thesis is discussing the office furniture industry of Herkimer, so the picture above was instantly recognizable!).
