Quality materials and craftsmanship are found in all three of these Ding3000 alterations, in contrast to the mass-produced Billy shelves. However, these Billy sidekicks are available for purchase, too, at Design 3000.
You should mention the price, which is absurd. The billy has sold well because it is within reach. These are upgrades that cost several times what the shelves cost, and one would only buy to seem clever for having spruced up ikea furniture.
I saw the book try, fell in love and went to their website to buy it. For that price, I'll just eschew the billy all together and get nicer shelves.
I agree Victor!! The accessories cost more than the shelf! Crazy!
There are only three upgrades, none of which are particularly practical, and as other posters mentioned, outrageously overpriced. This is a useless link (or were you paid to run it?!).
I don't want people to think I am impuning Maxwell, I like the link!
They are a very cute idea, and continue to show how being creative can really spruce up inexpensive furniture. ikeahacker has some similarly good ideas. Most of those, however, have a price in line with the inputs.
What I do think, is that this is a terrible product decision for the company, almost insulting. They should use materials that will make it a reasonable price. Billy's won't last forever, why would you want a billy specific upgrade to be heirloom quality solid wood.
If someone wantes to make a similar reading shelf out of cut acrylic, or something like that, I think it would be inexpensive, and beautiful, and practical!
You have to hand it to them, it took a lot of nerve to put this out there. Someone should tell them it's not April fools day yet.
