It is an odd concept to run a classic furniture retail store and a contemporary art gallery in the same space, but David Allen Gallery on Smith Street succeeds at both. Frustrated that you have never been able to see or buy from the ENTIRE Herman Miller collection of classic designs (DWR only has partial stock)?? Then David Allen Gallery is Mecca.
When not looking for furniture, you can browse the art gallery and discover that David Allen also has a good eye for contemporary art. This is not the Gagosian Gallery, most pieces run around $600 - $1000, and what we saw was interesting and varied (photographs that day)- the sort that you would actually think of putting on your living room wall.
You can choose from any of the hard to find Eames storage cabinets,
Aalto dining tables, or Nelson end tables (amongst other things) and then choose your finish and fabric in a quiet, helpful environment.
And beyond all this, one of the coolest things is the Atomic Chandelier in the window, which David Allen designed, makes out of multiple bulb fixtures - it sells for $200.

Thanks for your terrific review of our gallery. We are very pleased that someone out there understands us so well. I also wanted to let you know that I have another chandelier which I designed that should be in the gallery in October. It is a stepsister to the Atomic Chandelier and has the same found-object design aesthetic which worked so well in the Atomic. And by the way, please let your readers know to mention Apartment Therapy for a special discount!
Hey David,
I couldn't get on to your website or find an e-mail address for you but wanted to let you know that a friend of mine will be exhibiting in NYC in June, in case you're in town and interested. I can forward the info if you send me an address.
Hope you're doing well.
Melissa
