DIY Building Block: IVAR 3-Drawer Dresser from IKEA

Whether you're building a Richard Avedon-inspired bed or aspiring for the simplicity of Donald Judd, IKEA's IVAR components are great DIY basics that are simple and inexpensive. We've posted the IVAR Pine Box from IKEA, but now they've added a cheap, 3-drawer chest...

The solid pine chest (rear panel and drawer bottoms are particle board) is untreated wood and "can be cut, screwed into and drilled according to need & painted, stained, waxed or oil-treated." Measuring 31.5" wide, 22.5" tall and a little over 19.5" deep, the IVAR 3-drawer Chest is only $125 from IKEA.

We can imagine a whole bunch of these lined up against a wall for cheap storage and seating!

I could imagine a let of these as support for a Nook Bed in a studio! They could be finished to support the room with great drawer pulls.

I went with something like this to create a bed platform in my very tiny bedroom several years ago. However, my drawers are not as sturdy as these.

I don't understand how this is a good deal - there are many larger Ikea dressers and storage items that are larger and completely finished. They may be made from fiberboard, but pine is also extremely cheap and not much more durable.

That is to say, storage items that are CHEAPER and completely finished.

Seriously, this thing is $125. Why not get something that will last used off of craigslist? I don't understand the whole Ikea obsession. It's ugly, expensive crap (With the exception of their kitchen cabinets, those are well made).

Eh... solid wood (even pine) can withstand years of use if you treat it, and treat it right. A good coat of wax once a year will keep this looking beautiful as long as it's not subjected to a lot of extraneous pressure.
