2-29-flying.jpgThis takes the cake. Out in Denver, CO, FlyingBeds.com is pushing the envelope. They have a whole line of beds that come out of the wall in various different ways using the Murphy bed mechanism. Ron, the pilot, who runs the show has one overall guiding principle that urban dwellers would love: "Give me the largest room available."...

Their Euro FlyingBeds are the main attraction for us. Designed on the Continent, these things rock. There are six sleek, modern designs with prices that run from $2,000 to $5,000 for a kingsize "Twirly." Check out the fold-down bunk beds below!

It's the origami apartment!

how does that twirly work? is it double sided so the shelves are behind when you spin it around?

pretty cool...

I love the bunk beds. But my concern would be about safety and just exactly how strong these things are. You wouldn't want the bottom person to get squashed in the middle of the night...

It works by voodoo magic - that is the only explanation for these aberrations of nature.

Jessica
I would be more concened about squashing my laptop in the middle of the night. I probably wouldn't get a wink of sleep! LOL

Seriously though, these are really cool. I want one. I want six.

My hubby and I were just perusing their website last week! I really like the Twirly model (bottom image shown above), and we're seriously thinking of getting it. We're having an organizer come over this weekend and help us with our apartment, so we'll be asking her opinion. Anyone have a murphy-style bed that they are super happy with?

I bought my murphy bed several years ago at the Murphy Bed Center in Manhattan (20 West 23rd Street, 212-645-7079). I purchased the "library" model which a bookcase "front" with shallow shelves that hold my books and CDs (no large coffee table books though). For a studio apartment dweller it is the best purchase I ever made! Vistors are completely surprised by the multiple purposes.

this is an awesome concept, but here's my question: do the books actually STAY on the shelves when you bring the bed down? i am skeptical.

Does a bed like the twirly need to be installed into the floor and/or wall? Just wondering as I like it, but as a renter......

Yes, the books actually stay on the shelves. I have some baskets and other stuff on display as well. The only drawback is you need space for the doors to swing open on either side and a "footprint" for the bed. I think it's better than the table/murphy bed set up -- who wants to clean off a diningroom table before going to bed? Not me!

So is the bed actually comfortable? Seems like the foam would be a bit stiff.

Does anybody have or know of anybody that has the Belitec bed from FlyingBeds.com? How is it working for you?

These are seriously bad feng shui.

Feng Shui is seriously bad "science".

I also have a library-style murphy bed and it is great. You buy your own mattress, so it can be as soft or firm as you want (you are limited in how thick the mattress can be however). My murphy bed sounds different from Lenny's though-- the center shelves slide in front of the outer shelves-- all the books, vases, etc stay put. Click on my name to see what I'm talking (typing?) about.

I'm glad I have a murphy bed because it makes living in a 466 SF studio livable, but I wish I had one that were a little more modern looking.

For Libby, my bed is bolted to the floor and the cabinet is attached to the wall.

Great idea for the severely space challenged, but I still prefer a convention bed. Just curious....I wonder how it would stand up to the "Mattress Mambo"???? Seems like it might not stand up to much action......

FYI:
There is an outfit in the Bronx that makes beds like these. I don't have the info at the moment, but they advertise in the NY Post.

Re sex on these beds:
I don't know. I don't think I'd try it on any but the traditional Murphy style.

Re: "Mattress Mambo"

My murphy bed is probably sturdier than any other bed I've ever had. Remember, part of it is actually BOLTED to the floor. It holds up very well to the mattress mambo and also to my little nephews playing "12 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed."

I had blogged about these beds a long time ago and forgotten about them! They are SO cool especially for you Manhattanites (ites? is that right?) who live in the tiniest of spaces.

I just got my Flying Beds queen-size bed/sofa/bookcase. It has a 12 deep mattress, which I tried out in the local bedding store before giving Ron the go ahead to use it. I couldn't be happier with the quality of workmanship, the competence of the installation person (Ron, himself) and the amazement of friends and family who have seen the system closed and then opened.
I've always liked the concept of the Murphy bed and Ron has taken it to a whole new level of style, comfort and versatility. Yes, it is bolted to the floor and the wall but then, I live in earthquake country and wouldn't settle for anything less.

hmmm. the link doesn't seem to work.

What are the chances of being able to get a 4' wide murphy bed with desk?

If they can do that--my guestroom may be a worthy contender for a murphy bed.

I saw the Twirly bed at the Sunset Home last month. I didn't see it open, but the shelves and table were really attractive. I didn't know it was a Murphy bed until the guide told me.

I've thought about a Murphy bed for our living room for guests, but realized I couldn't really put a couch or furniture in front of the bed unless I moved it away everytime I had a guest. I think I've finally decided that it would be better to get a fold out couch or use an aerobed.

But, they're great for studio dwellers or people that have larger rooms or offices to put them in.

The bunk bed doesn't have a rail to prevent kiddos from falling out

i'm seriously considering something like this. i chuckle, though because my cat will become quite upset to have 'his' largest bed disappear during the day!

Dear SF Gail-

About the Murphy Bed issue, there is actually a model "The Chesterfield" http://www.morespaceplace.com/chesterframe.html that includes a sofa that DOES NOT have to be moved as it is part of the design. At More Space Place http://www.morespaceplace.com/ you can see the model and many others described at this web log.

FlyingBeds.com seems to offer the greatest variety of Murphy style beds but read carefully about their return and installation policies. On their web site the model with the sofa is called "The Lodge" http://www.flyingbeds.com/07.Sofa-Bed/Lodge.htm

Good Luck
