I remember first noticing this piece years ago in its original red color. While I liked it then, and was tempted to buy it at that time, I don't think I ever made the jump because it has abit of that "high school locker" feel. I realize that's what they are going for, but didn't quite fit with a post-college me then, and it definitely doesn't fit with an even-older me now.

I was looking at this exact piece earlier. I pine for it, but always hesitate because I worry it won't fit in with any of my stuff. D:

I put one of these in my awesome room, and hid my printer inside of it and all my office junk inside of it. It's nice because it has holes to run the cords through.

The doors are a little flimsy but overall this is an awesome value.

I quess I saw it in a magazine and Sarah Jessica Parker have it in her S.Hampton house.

I used to have a black one that was more upright. I used it for my tv/vcr set up for a few years. When I moved, my roommate got it.

I'd like to get something similar now for our telephone/computer printer situation, but I'd also like something that can double as a filing cabinet. Can anyone think of a way to alter it for that (I'd need a narrower version)?

I purchased 2 white cabinets and used spray paint to kick them up - they look fantastic!

Actually, this cabinet is routinely sold out in the NYC area - I have a friend who was trolling Ikea looking for one for months before he gave up. My big tip for people who like this look is PB Teen, they have a ton of locker-style furniture including beds, desks and dressers.

Ooh, I'm almost getting the "I don't want to get on the bus to go to the horrible school" stomach ache just looking at that cabinet.

Is it strong enough to use as a bench? Because I think it might be a great temporary substitute for the built-in window-seat I really want.

Is it metal? I don't see anything on the IKEA site about it.

It's metal. Also, it's the only thing that I bought at my Ikea trip in Atlanta that I truly felt was wise. Everything else probably won't make it through one move because it's all particle board and lacquer.

I've had mine (white) for years now, and it's survived a number of moves and a lot of rough handling. There are a few dings and scratches, but it still looks sharp and clean and I still love it.

At various times it's served me as office storage, a TV bench, a CD cabinet, and hallway landing strip. It's a great piece of furniture.

(How can someone abhor "anything IKEA"? Why not judge the individual pieces on their own merit? I'll never understand that mindset.)

This is one of those amazing pieces that just works anywhere. If you look carefully in magazines, you will see it repeatedly used in homes all over the world. I was watching HGTVs International Open House last night and spotted it there in the 3rd apartment that the guy was looking at. I spotted it recently in an Australian magazine in a room amidst artwork that would go for at least half a mill if not more. It is everywhere, and like the Eames wire chair, an insta-classic!

I'm with those that just don't get the locker-style furniture. Maybe it's cause my locker in high school never opened.

And hating everything Ikea just seems kinda silly to me. I reserve loathing on principle for the likes of Wal-mart!

I have one of these in my home office. The locker look fits there, its perfect to hide all my office supplies, and provides a good surface for the printer. Some design mag (can't recall the name) ran a story on a loft owner who lined an entire wall with these, and stacked a few books and a simple sound system on top. The look was clean and surprisingly grown up. That sold me.

I just need to find one with a single door and broke legs.
I want to install my server inside and my all in one printer on top and put it on low casters.

Oh, well.

I doubt anyone in Chattanooga has one.

And while I have HORRIBLE memories of locker rooms due to gym class, ironically, many of my favorite, um, "videos" are frequently set in them. ;)

We have it in our office at work. Red. Nice to look at but it's metal. It rattles. You need keys to open and close... I wouldn't use it at home.

A friend who's moving recently gave me a red one. I'm moving this month and I probably don't have enough room for it. Anyway, my favourite IKEA pick is the Helmer drawer unit.

Anna in Newburgh: How did that work in your landing strip? I've had my eye on this for the exact same function but worry it might sit too low. I love the idea of storing boots, mittens, umbrellas, etc inside, though.

I had this in red for years. Used it in one apartment as an entryway mail table/ landing strip and used it in another as a sofa table that stored my art and office supplies. Sold it before I left San Diego to move to NYC. :(

Helena: I'm sorry for the delayed response, I didn't see your comment earlier.

I personally like a lower-sitting landing strip, because I tend to dump my bag on top of a bench/chair/whatever rather than hanging it on a hook. What I particularly love about pieces like these is that you can stick a few baskets inside and just dump everything in there and shut the door to get it out of sight. That includes cell phones and iPods that need to charge, too...since the locker unit has holes in the back for cords, everything stays hidden away.

I'm noticing now that the newer units have white legs rather than silver like mine does. I'm jealous!
