NY Good Questions: Is This Credenza A Keeper?

6.13credenza.jpgDear AT,

I need to know if this credenza is a keeper!

I've been searching for a mid century credenza for my new place, and haven't come across anything too promising locally.

However, I don't move for two more months, so of course patience is the name of the game.

However, in my searching I came across this metal office credenza, and it looks like it might be a great solution for my new bedroom...

I have a fantastic, large closet so I'm ditching my clunky old bureau, but still need something to hold a few choice items - both for function and display.

This credenza measures 60" long- 19" deep - 30" high, and is selling for $50.

I have a Malm bed in black-brown, and I'm going for some white bed linens and white linen curtains, with gray walls... since I have plenty of colorful things to adorn the room with.

So my three-for-one the far more savvy ATers out there: What would I have to do to refinish this?
Is it worth it? What color(s) would you go with for it?

Thanks! Courtney

would make a good entertainment center, with those slots for DVD and Tivo box.

I cant tell what you'd use it for, clothes? "choice items" doesnt mean anything to me.

plasticorange- great point...

I'd probably stick a few drawer organizers in there for underwear and socks... a few old t-shirts and PJs. Otherwise, all of my clothes would hang in the nice, big closet.

I'd keep my small TV on top, stash my DVD player and a couple of favorite movies and books there, and I'd also put some art and such on top (a photo, a small sculpture, a lamp, flowers... whathaveyou) other drawers/shelves would hold the other things that are necessary-but-homeless (for example, makeup, notebooks, things of all sorts.)

Sorry so lengthy! I guess ultimately I know that it'll have space for all the things I need... it is a matter of how much work it'll be to convert this hunk of metal into something i'm willing to welcome into my boudoir!

Since it's metal, you can easily have it sandblasted and powdercoated in any color you'd like.

Anna- I've thought about that, and would really prefer to DIY this one. I should have been more clear about that... that's what I get for not having someone else check my question before sending it in!

So for everyone else - I'm interested in the work required of me to clean and prettify this metal credenza, rather than going through someone else.

Is the paint chipping / damaged? If not a good ole can (or three) of rustoleoum and some time will do this very nicely.

I stole an AT idea and recently did my bedroom in aqua w/a red painted bed and man... the bed took more time than I realised to dry but it looks great and wasn't hard. You just need space to work.

Gloss white?

if the surface is damaged i'd keep looking for now. I've been trying to get the paint off an old patio chair for ages. stripping metal is hard and is best done by pros.

As far as the price, $50 would be a steal at a flea market, and still an ok price for Craig's List.

I'm not crazy about the lines. But that's subjective. I like my mid-century pieces to have a little more funk, little more Jetsons. It's a conservative piece. But that may fit your needs, decor and taste.

The real question is, do you like it?

It's difficult to tell from the small and slightly out of focus images just what kind of condition it is in.

I actually have this console. It's one of Thomas O'Brien's designs for Target.

It's very sturdy and could probably be painted easily.

I think it's fine as is. And considering MPD's comment, it was clearly designed as a contemporary piece, and is not just some old office credenza.

Sometimes people here are a little too eager to paint everything. Anything that sits still for too long will eventually end up painted high gloss white.

I have this piece, which is Thomas Obrien for Target. I purchased it about 2 or 3 years ago on clearance for somewhere around $200. It's wood veneer with chrome hardware. I'd say it's worth the $50 as ours has held up well and I think it would go well with the malm black-brown bed.

if it's all metal you can strip the paint off and leave it steel/silver. my boyfriend did that with an old metal credenza and it looks amazing. silver goes with anything.

I don't think it's metal. As others have mentioned, it looks like a Target piece (which I also own). We put casters on the bottom, threw the tv on top, put the cable box and surround sound in the center and the gaming systems in the cabinet on the left. I then put our house files in the lower drawer on the right. Remotes and controllers go in the center drawer and gameboys, DSs, and their games go in the upper right drawer.

You could probably store clothing in it, but I'm not sure it would hold a lot of clothing.

I think it looks great as is. I wish I could find one of those myself!
