NY Good Questions: Similar, Narrow Bookshelf?

6.27shelf.jpgDear AT,

I'm looking for a black bookcase to fill a narrow space in my office.

The ideal bookcase would be similar to the Riley from World Market (see picture) -- at least 6 feet tall, BUT no more than 18 inches wide (16" is even better).

Bonus points for adjustable shelves and some sort of decorative molding.

I've been looking for months and have had no luck!

A last resort is getting unfinished furniture, but even the selection there is limited (and becomes surprisingly expensive when you add in the finishing)...

I'm surprised that with all the hype about small-scaled furniture, it's still very difficult to find a basic narrow bookcase.

(Yes, I've looked at Ikea, and unfortunately, the black-brown color will not go with the rest of the furniture). Thanks! A.M

This seems to be the size and color you're looking for, but not the style:

It's a toughie. Good luck!

Oops, sorry. I took the depth for the width...

Take another look at the Markor line at IKEA. At the price ($119), you could afford to buy a can of paint and make it black.

If you've been to furniture stores, etc, have you looked in the media storage section? I've seen something similar designed to hold DVDs at Sears years ago.

Try Gothic Cabinet Craft. I've had good luck with them in the past and they might be able to accommodate.

I have super skinny shelf from Gothic. They will custom make them for you.

As some of the other folks have mentioned, Home Decorators Collection has a large selection of shevling and bookcases is a variety of sizes and finishes. Sorry I don't have a more original recommendation. :)

# Ideal for the home or office
# Features 2 fixed shelves and 3 adjustable shelves
# Made of solid wood and wood veneer. Finished in black onyx
# Dimensions: 18"L x 11-1/2"W x 72"H.
http://tinyurl.com/5c8ry7

And I believe the correct way of doing those measurements would be to state that the item is 18"W x 11-1/2"D x 72"H

Narrow isn't the word you want, the keyword would be "tower" and then you find there are many very tall, very narrow bookcases, but they aren't all in black.

Here's the funny thing about that bookcase, I found it via NexTag, and this is the description:

OfficeMax Boulevard Tower Bookcase, Black

OfficeMax Boulevard Tower Bookcase, Black
Gender: Female

OfficeMax

You might want to be sure to spay that bookcase, or else you may be over run with little shelving units...
