Possessed: Susan Yelavich's Erecta Shelves

8-20-yelavich.jpgWe've loved Metro Shelving for years, but it was only by reading David Coleman's article yesterday, Possessed: Shelves That Bear the Weight of Time, that we got the full story:

Patented by Louis Maslow in 1951 (he founded the Metropolitan Wire Goods Corporation in New York in 1929), the Erecta Shelf system was designed as a modular easy-to-assemble line for the home, available in black paint over steel or brass-plated steel.

We didn't know this, and we're not sure what the relationship between Erecta and Metro now is. We found these links for Erecta shelving, which are different from those that take you to Metro shelving and to the Metro company. It does, however, look like Metro is the sole manufacturer and that only the names differ. We like the older name.

I like the older name, too. I bought these shelves about 15 years ago; they are currently being used in two of our closets. So versatile and sturdy, and look good too.
