Sticotti Shelving System from Design Within Reach

1-sticotti-shelves.jpg

A new Design Within Reach catalog landed in the office today — and we're fans of the new Sticotti Shelving system. Designed by Argentinian architect Alejandro Sticotti, the system is made of hardwood and resembles ELFA in concept (the entire system hangs from a wall-mounted bracket) but is not the shelving you would want to hide in the closet. The three units can be combined to form custom shelving systems and there is even a deeper desk/shelf to create workspace...

1 A custom unit made from combining Unit A, Unit B and a Desk Shelf.

2 Unit A (tall and narrow) is $1,350.

3 Unit B (short and wide) is $1,200.

4 Unit C (tall and wide) is &1,900.

5 The Desk Shelf is $100.

The Sticotti Shelving Collection is available from Design Within Reach.

...or you could search eBay, Craigslist and fleamarkets to find the vintage Danish shelving systems that these are knocked-off of...
...or get a local carpenter/cabinetmaker to create something similar for you - either case would be far, far less.

Or go to Container Store’s annual Elfa sale going on right now. Geez, people, haven’t you hear that we are in Great Depression 2.0?

Actually it isn't that expensive. I don't think you'd be able to find a cabinet maker to build it for less. My concern -- and i like its looks -- is that the mounting system wouldn't support a full load of books. Elfa, btw, can be pretty expensive for a full wall unit, even on sale, and it looks like crap.

You can find a carpenter to do this for much less. Trust me we're all hurting for work.

I purchased a system exactly like this at the Cambridge, MA Door Store twelve years ago. I think they still custom make them.

Its attractive, but looks rather precarious. The whole thing just hangs off the top rail thats screwed to the wall, and the shelves slide into the notched wood verticals without any other fasteners. With no hardware to hold it together one small nudge or knock and it will likely all fall down (probably on a pet or kid!). And the price is insulting. A local woodshop could build you something equivalent out of walnut and white oak, stronger, and to custom dimensions for half the price.

for $4500 you can get shelving, a really nice desk and an awesome chair. and if you wanted, someone to come and do at least one days work for you! what a rip off!
