Ha ha...great question! For us the "Karate chop" is to offensive for our classic furniture. We fluff 2 times in the air and then "poke" using the index finger.
I think you gotta go with a pillow-by-pillow basis. Going with the zebra-striped example above, it mars the snazzy pattern.

I definitely fluff. This has the same odd look to me as squared-off fingernails still do, even after 20 years.

I give my pillows a straight 'HYASHI!' to the center. This is then followed by my dog walking over and sticking his bum against it. The perfect fluff followed by doggie fluff.
