Hey...How about an accent wall...the smaaller one by your "media center"...you might also want to try a slip cover not a fan but it is an easy way to bring some instant color/texture into the room...and why not try moving your sofa/couch to a different location. I think the one thing that really makes any room drab is the lack of good lighting and you could use more...have you looked at any mags for inspiration? Another side table to balance the area and a plant or a truly lovely arrangement of flowers...let us know what you come up with...

What about a long, low platform made of wood/MDF attached to wall / on simple legs for the telly + other electronics, with rattan baskets beneath for storage?

If you use an uplighter and also a couple of pebble shaped glass lights on the floor, you'll create fewer shadows.

Tall vase with dried reeds + twinkly lights / feathers in them help disguise an unused corner.
