When the fruit cart is right outside our building's front door and the offerings so attractively arranged, when the fruit sold is seasonal and at it's peak, of course we by from the fruit cart - if only to remind oursleves we are neither in suburbia, the country or most other American cities. And we - horrors - even buy our newspapers and cigarettes from a... sidewalk newstand!

Absolutely. I'm from Baltimore where we had Arabbers, horse drawn fruit vendors who would sing about their produce for sale. NYC fruit carts aren't nearly as charming, but are the next best thing.
