Argh! I had an authentic vintage retro whatever big metal desk at the nonprofit I used to work at and the genious exec director just saw it as old and took it to the dump. Damn - if I couldhave hauled that thing away and kept/sold it (the thing was so heavy and sturdy it was where I planned to duck under in the event of an earthquake). My gut said it was worth something at the time but he wouldn't believe me. Apparently faux wood pressboard crap was going to be soooo much better.

Our state government and the university regularly discard vast quantities of this old heavy steal furniture through a surplus property program. Big steal desks, tables, chairs, and shelving of the 50s and 60s vintage in like new condition can be purchased for less than $10 each.
Perhaps the LA company comes out here to flyover land with a big truck and takes it all down to sunny LA.
Sounds like a business opportunity to me. I imagine they have a warehouse of these things available up in Albany.

Libby--
You don't sulk alone... my Dad had an army-tank of a desk chair that I've since seen at upscale retailers stripped to bare metal and tricked out in leather upholstery. It KILLS me we didn't keep that chair!! That, and his Remington manual typewriter.

Here's another vintage-and-other heavy metal supplier...
