Look! Skateboard Headboard

10-22-skateboard-headboard.jpg

All Decked Out. Super-blogger and DWR Blu Dot employee, Bradford Shellhammer made a headboard from his collection of designer skateboards. What a great way to show off a collection...

Wow, I love the look of that although it is somewhat lost amid all the other wall activity.

I think it would look great also if the boards would unfinished or just clear-lacquered. Very "updated Eames splint."

A framed pair of panties?! Nice.

That kind of looks just stuck there. But in general this shot would fit better in a girl no older than 25's room. Bradford is giving bloggers a bad name.

Hi Aaron. Thanks for posting this!

This is for my summer house where every room is a different theme. It is supposed to be sensory overload in that room. That's the intent.

And those are not just any panties. They are K-Mart polyester undies from the 70s. They were given to me new in package from Cynthia Rowley as a gift . . . so of course I put them on the wall!

and is it a bad thing that I am happy someone said it looks like a "girl no older than 25's room."

giggle.

Actually, you've got a point youngbradford: I bet the young girls really dig it when you bring them home. This room is made of win.

Cutest skateboards ever!

I like the idea, but that doesn't look like a headboard it just loks like more art that just happens to be hanging there. Especially since it doesn't appear from the photo to even be as wide as the bed.

If this was done on a wall that wasn't completely covered in other quirky art, it would stand out and be pretty bad ass. But, right now I look at it and can't help thinking that the whole thing looks like what an Applebees would look like if Andy Warhol designed it. (except in a bedroom)

Wondering why stuff like this posted a year or more ago often gets shuffled up to the surface and posted again.

What a charming art wall. I'd love to see the whole house.

Sorry. I'm distracted by the watermelon art.

I like the look of the wall, but because the boards aren't the length of the bed, it seems to just stop short of working. The wall would be nice opposite the bed, with a long row of decks as the only decoration over the bed. But reading the comments, that's not what the owner was going for.

And seriously, that sambo drawing freaks me the hell out. I'd have to cover it because even in this picture, I feel like it's watching me. That and I can't stop thinking of blackface and jim crow.

Age is a state of mind. You go ahead and hang your doilies and spoons on your wall, let Bradford hang his skateboard decks. :P

I saw a photo on Flickr I loved where someone used a weathered skateboard deck as a door pull on a big steel door. Very cool.

If this is a repost, I'm wondering why AT didn't also retool its explanatory paragraph to note (as explained in Bradford's comment) that the point of the room is sensory overload. It would have explained a lot up front and saved subsequent commentors the time it takes to post a critique of its... er... sensory overload.

This is awesome.

I'd frame those, too, given the backstory. That's hilarious.

I'm actually curious about the method of hanging since they're "wheel's out."

I'm filing this away to add to my "graffiti/skater room" plan for when my kids turn about 8 or 10.

Yeah, I'd like an explanation of that racist picture, too. Somehow the fact that it's right next to the monkeys -- it comes off as especially twisted.

"Yes we can."

Agree with patrick's first comment - it would stand out more if they were given their own space. One of my bad-TV weaknesses is the show "Rob & Big," on which one of the co-stars, former pro-skater Rob Dyrdek, has an absolutely amazing wall bordered with of all his signature boards from over the years.

Wish I could find a better pic - the border wraps around two or three walls and has a stunning effect (even if skateboards aren't your thing).

They look like Jeff Koons boards. They are not cheap - $5000.

I love it Bradford!! I like the idea of sensory overload and you did a good job of blending colors really well. I too would really be interested in finding out how you mounted the boards because I have a friend whose son is a skater. I think too, that you should keep adding to them as you can so they match the width of the bed!

BTW, for all of you commenting on the picture of the black face, images like this represent a part of history that was racist and horrible but they also are considered collector's items so people that collect them aren't saying 'look at me, i'm a racist and I can flaunt it', they are recognizing the ignorant part of our history so to speak. You can find things like the picture shown above and Aunt Jemimah's all over in antique stores. I'm assuming that here it's for shock value because the room IS sensory overload. I'm mixed and NOT offended but understand what these symbols say about history in America but I can see why people would also find it shocking and ask!

Whoa wait a minute the boards are THAT expensive?? Okay then scratch what I said about adding more and just maybe surround them with solid wood boards instead! Yikes!!

SweetLuna,

By your reasoning, it would be okay to frame swastikas and portraits of Hitler too.

These images are offensive. We are all aware of the atrocities that have happened throughout history. It is neither necessary nor appropriate to put pictures like this in a frame and call it art, or worse, decoration.
