What's up with this "living big in small apartments" phenomenon where the "small apartments" featured as examples are 5th ave lofts designed by architects? A loft is not a small apartment. A 280 square foot studio in an old tenement is a small apartment. And generally the people who live in these small apartments can't afford an architect. I want as nice a space as possible and I always get excited when I see one of these "small apartment" books but my hopes are dashed when I open it and I'm shown an architectually designed 1200 square foot loft. Is there a book that actually deals with small apartments on a budget for people who live in them?

I agree with Josie - how is "small space living" being defined? Would this be a smallish loft as compared to a massive one? I'm looking for 300-600 sq ft living space ideas.
