Could someone tell me what the Aerogel is for? I don't get it.
Hey anne, seems that aerogel, while being ideal for catching comet dust, is one of the best insulators known to humankind. The fact that it is nearly transparent and can be impregnated into flexible fabrics makes it a great insulator for glass (not sure how good a nearly transparent window would be though) and clothing. The fact that it is so light also helps.
Cost is prohibitive though compared to tradtional insulation products.
JP - I hate to seem brain dead but can you give me an example of the use of this stuff?
Hi anne, the second page of the wired article that the link above references mentions Burton using it in ski wear. Imagine a flexible gel type of layer inside the lining of your ski jacket instead of down or hollowfiber or whatever. Aerogel is so light and such a good insulator that (or so they say) that it would make for an extremely light but warm jacket. It is also flexible enough to be part of the farbic.
As for insulating glass, think about how normal insulation is done. An inert gas is trapped between two or three pains of glass (which is a terrible insulator of heat) but this never approaches the efficiency of wall insulation. If aerogel could be made transparent enough then the gel could be trapped between two panes of glass and the resultant window/door/glass curtain wall would be even better insulated than a wall with the thickest type of insulation. Again, if these claims are true.
The Luau lamp is made by Vessel, who are also responsible for the Candela lamps. No competition, just an addition to a great product suite.
OK, that makes sense. I get it. I was looking at the hockey puck photo of it and couldn't put insulation and hockey puck gel into one entity.
Love 10 Crescent Lane. They have a great selection of products from traditional French inspired to the more modern, my personal favorite. Although some pieces are out of my price range, it gives me a lot of great ideas for how to decorate my home. Nice job Home Depot.
