The hairy chair looks like a puli dog.

LJ - or maybe a relative of Barkley from Sesame Street

The Bas cabinet rocks. I love unexpected color, like a flashy silk lining on a dark suit.

That wasn't the item everyone expected me to comment on now was it.

Wow, AT seems to be changing its consumer demographic with that Bas cabinet.

A $25,000 bookshelf? Is it made from kryptonite?

iPooped? iCarumba. Whatever happened to singing showtunes on the toilet and enjoying the amazing way your voice sounds echoed against the tiles in the tiny room. Not that I'd ever do that...

Anyone else want to see the hairy chair in a Barkley from Sesame Street model?

i feel like the Bas cabinet could be easily faked, DIY and for dirt cheap. sure you wouldn't get the automotive finish, but c'est la vie.

all you would need is a cheapo thrift store bookshelf, cupboard, hutch, china cabinet, whatever (preferably not too dinged up) and two shades of high gloss paint, an expected neutral (probably white) and a surprisingly bold shade for the interior shelf areas. paint the outside white or whatever neutral. paint the inside your suprisingly bold color choice. voila, a $25,000 bookshelf for probably less than $100.

Oh man... call me miss fake-n-bake, but IM LOVING THE TANNING SHOWER. I want one badly..

I marked that shelf in the Elle Decor and thought the same thing as you, opoponax. Even if I had a carpenter build one for me, it still wouldn't come anywhere near $25K. But I did think that it would be a beautiful place to store magazines. Or yarn. Or magazines about yarn.

i'm guessing the price tag is mostly due to that automotive finish (which i think is probably more exciting in print than anything else), handmade high quality wood and construction (personally if i'm getting extremely high quality wood cabinetry work i want to SEE THE WOOD rather than have a painted finish), the custom color option, international shipping on a huge and bulky piece, etc. it's like they figured out all the absolute most expensive and/or impressive components so as to turn a relatively simple piece into total furniture porn. thus impressing people with lots of money and not so much design discretion, you know, the people most likely to cough up 25K for a bookshelf.

Saying you could duplicate that bookcase, but without the automotive finish, is like saying you could reproduce a diamond ring. Without the diamond.

a 25k bookshelf that would handle art books nicely but not that many of them either. i know i keep saying this but i have a lot of books and feel rather envious that nobody seems to design nice shelves for us. i generally find shelves too few and too spaced apart. i do like the color combination though -- very pretty.

imagine how relaxing my shower is since i got my melanin the old-fashioned way -- millenia of genetic engineering!

I covet that cabinet.

Just a guess, but getting an automotive finish (super shiny, super even, super durable) into that many little holes would cost you a pretty penny. Not $25K worth, but it would not be cheap.

Yes, it's a huge mark up. But so are designer clothes, meals out, and bottled water. This thing is priced $25K, which means that to someone it's worth $25K. Very rarely are things over priced. Very often they cost more than an individual consumer wants to spend.
