The white ceramic tiles have the appearance of animals' footprints in freshly-fallen snow. The ones shown here are hare footprints but there are other animals available, too. Via: The Design Blog.
in the concrete sidewalk in front of my mothers house there are permanent cat prints where "someone" let the cat escape and he traipsed right through the freshly poured cement.

After a time or two when it happened by accident that a chicken or other animal ran across Saltillo tiles in Mexico waiting to be baked, it's now routine for makers to do it on purpose -- cute little chicken tracks to reinforce the "authentic" look. These Finnish tiles are very handsome.

I find these very soothing--something about the shadows that settle in the concavities suggests calm, to me.

These may be soothing but they must be annoying to clean.

Adorable and lovely. I would love to have some custom made with the paw prints of my two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

My parents have "dog prints" (fake, of course) running through the guest room and patio downstairs. (It was a little funny because they didn't have a dog at the time they built the house.)

Deborah, where can a person get these Saltillo chicken track tiles? I want some!

Probably no worse to clean than the surrounding grout lines, and at least you're getting whimsy for your trouble...

Love them as well, doubt they'd be that difficult to clean, but suspect I'd trip on the indentations....

My idiot tile installer would have installed the footprints pointing in opposite directions.

There were tile manufactories on every other corner in Mexico, of course, but not so much in Manhattan .. you're more likely to find it in places that sell a lot of Mexican tile -- Texas, California.. I Googled it just now & found a recommendation for: http://www.naturalstoneintl.com/ (site under re-construction -- Mexitile in Scottsdale, Arizona)

One more thing -- the free enterprise system being what it is, the tile guys now charge extra for the chicken tracks.

On The McGill university campus in Montreal there is a building
with a brick wall in the alley that has cat paw prints on the bricks.
My sister was taking photos (she loves cats& strange things) when two professors asked why. When shown the prints, they asked how the cat was able to climb up the wall!
