i don't know how keen i am on the shelves, but does anyone know where i can get a metal strip like that? i want to mount it in the wall in my kitchen (horizontally, not vertically) as a permanent magnetic bulletin board kind of thing.

these things never work. The minute you put something with some weight to it it slides down the wall. THis would only work if it has the magnatism such as those used in a scrap metal yard and those have an electric current through it.

at a guess, it should work for light weight dust catchers -- though it's a bit of a dust catcher in and of itself. love the concept though.
