apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#37 - Cem's Tiny Turkish Delight

Name: Cem
Location: Manhattan, Upper East Side
Size: 384 sq ft (12 x 32 ft) Studio

Favorite resource:

Manhattan / Istanbul flea markets (especially for art work), IKEA, West Elm

What inspired you?

The lack of space vs. my need to have separate sleeping / dining areas.

The storage cubes in front of the sofa: 1) I primarily use them as coffee tables. 2) They hold my cds and Turkish floor cushions. 3) They double as dining room chairs.

The sofa is a sleeper sofa.

The dinner table: 1) When it is closed this table measures 20 inches by 53 inches and I use it when I have dinner by myself or with my girlfriend. 2) When closed it also functions as a console for drinks, and appetizers. 3) When opened it measures 40 inches by 53 inches and can seat up to six people very comfortably.
I use the sofa, storage cubes, and my two chairs for seating.

Design Tip:

Multifunctionality! Especially if you are living in a small space like mine.

The Ikea lamps behind my bed: 1)They act as a room divider between the sleeping and the living areas.
They hide the bed so one cannot see it from the door upon entry. 2) I also use them as night lamps. They came with a dimmer, which I placed under the bed.
This way I do not have to get up to turn them off / on at night. 3) They also act as the living room lamps, creating a cozy atmosphere.

The lowest level of the white built in shelves in the sleeping area functions as a desk when I work from home.

where did you get that very cozy looking chair-and-half? i have been looking for one, but have only seen them in price ranges beyond my paltry budget....

Cute. Wonderfully efficienct use of space b/c of multi-functionality of so many pieces of furniture.

The dining table is especially versatile, as are the storage cubes (storage, coffee table, dining table seating) and room divider lamps.

AWESOME use of space savers and space saving techniques. It's a total "how to". I've seen that console/dining table listed somewhere before.

Good use of those Ikea divider lamps...I wanted to have a reason to buy them, but didn't. Your way of using them is great. I would have loved to see a night shot with them lit at night!

Very nice, practical solutions.

Cozy. I wish there were a better shot of the lamp divider solution.

I want your table!

i like it. only complaint is there is too much white wall in relation to the art. can you paint the walls to tie it all together? beyond that i like what you have on the walls, your furniture and your layout plan.

Hello.

The table is from Housing Works on 77th Ave.

The sleeper / sofa is from Crate and Barrel. It is called Troy. This particular color was on sale at almost half the price when I got it. That was the only way I could afford it.

Thank you for the comments.

Great job. I really like the Ikea lamp divider - wish we could see a better picture of it.

And a framed Brian Bolland Joker on the wall - you've got my stamp of approval!

Great / fun use of space. I agree that a little color on the walls would help the space. Warm it up. I would paint the walls in the sleeping area something fun and vibrant, and then paint the brown bookcase and divider white. I like white elements on a darker background, maybe thats just me. Great place!

I'm not a fan of orange, but hey you got it on sale and I think keeping the walls white makes it work. A vibrant paint color would be to much for me. I like the contrast, the color pops against white. And don't ruin the wood furntiture by painting it!

This should be called the Transformers apartment. "A flew clicks and twists and the Cycletron chair turns into a bike."

A+ for efficieny/problem solving.

I think we should get to vote on the drawings. This one is so cute! The sofa pillow is exquisite.

I'm with Trish M. on this one.

Hey, Trish hope I didn't freak you out when I spoke to you in the DC elevator last week. ; ) Small world.

Jimkk, I think it would be great to run into an ATer out in the real world!

great job! did the microwave come with the space or did you install? and how?

posted by fran on 2006-03-22 13:19:02

The microwave came with the place. There is a built in niche that is part of the cabinetry on that wall. The part of the wall corresponding to the niche has an outlet. The microwave is plugged in there. I thought it was a pretty smart set up too when I first went to see the apartment.

Love the GREAT flexibility of the furnishings (and everything looks "right" in each set up, almost to the point where it's difficult to tell how each new arrangement was conjured up, and from where! Well done!), and echo the admiration for the use of those Ikea divider lights.

That pillow is exquisite. I crave it! And I love the balance between clean and simple lines and warm, soft curves and accents.

If you paint wood furniture, you do not necessarily "ruin" it. You may be bringing new life to it by making it actually look good in its space.

Excellent work here, on a genuinely small space. Great space solutions, lack of clutter, comfortable personal touches. Thank you for sharing.

Love this. Very nice blend of styles that look inviting but also elegant in a teensy space. Also, personable with touches that are hard to work in without looking jokey, such as the comic posters.

Use of red color to unite brings in exotic flavor and complements the dark wood of table, and the use of space is efficient without looking at all cluttered. Bravo!

Am I missing it, or is there actually no television in this apartment? Could it be?

Love the use of the lamps!

posted by latillin on 2006-03-24 11:25:51

I used to have a tv set but about two years ago it started turning itself off abruptly. So I got rid of it and have been without a tv for the last 10 and a half months. It has been quite interesting. I get the news from the radio.

I also do not have room for a tv.
9Plasma screens are a bit over my budget at this point.) I might get a tv if I move into a bigger space in the future.

Thank you for demonstrating (with photos) how you move the furniture around -- your apartment works for both entertaining and living. But no one needs whole empty rooms full of furniture and devoid of life -- I like the small and flexible scheme more and more. I recently visited homes in Memphis, Vermont, and New York City, and in all 3 cases a family of 3-4 spent the bulk of their time "living" in just a single room. Their formal rooms were lifeless.
