#39 - Fabiola's Small Bold Moves

Name: Fabiola
Location: New York, NY
Size: 300 s/f Studio

Favorite resource:

The Container Store, Ikea and the MOMA store

What inspired you?

The layout includes special places for different activities. The exposed brick wall serves as a unifying element while adding color and texture. Each place is defined by a bold gesture, like a piece of furniture, a sequence of paintings or the juxtaposition of patterns that vary in scale.

...Frequently used items, like music CDs, the current reads and some office supplies, are stored in bins and boxes that insinuate their presence bellow the tables, the bench and the bed. The apartment was furnished with a moderate budget, which made it all the more challenging and fun!

Design Tip:

Dont be afraid of using a large piece of furniture in a small space!

Wowie, that's small! Props for keeping it clean and uncluttered. Not easy to do.

No way could I eat sitting on an ottoman

Greetings Fabiola,

Lovely space. I really like the art displayed over your workstation. Great use of a small studio apartment; you organize things very well.

I like your kitchen area, especially since it has its own little space off of the living area vs. being IN the actual living room space, which is typical in Boston studio apartments up here. I also admire that your kitchen has a window - that's a luxury, for sure!

Your dining space was well planned. Clever. You opted for leather ottomans which warm up the space without making it the focal point of the room. It doesn't look like a dining space. It blends very well with your living room. The ottomans also provide additional seating for guests, which I'm sure you thought of, and you can use them to plop your feet up on since they are in such close proximity to your reading area.

The brick exposure is so pretty. I'd like to see something over your sofa, however if you rent, you may be afraid to pound holes into the wall. If that's the case, you can always using those screw eye hooks and fishing wire to suspend a beautiful fabric panel over the sofa, from the ceiling. You an purchase a long piece of bamboo as the rod, to give the room some texture and bring in some more warmth. Just an idea.

Really like the art above the computer - I think that is what this place needs a shot more of - that individual uniqueness. It is great that everything seems to have a place and there is nothing of excess; which is my ultimate goal.

Amazing that you can put all of it in 300 SQ FT! I like the box/storage idea under the coffee table and you little breakfast bar. Congrats on the nice decorating job.

Good use of a very small space

Mine is 350 sq. feet. Isn't The Container Store a godsend! Just for the ideas alone!

You've done a great job! The ottomans at the dining table wonderful!

From the photos, this place feels *huge* for 300 sf. So that's well done.

But it doesn't feel livable for me personally. I'd need more table space to spread out during each "activity," or I'd feel cramped no matter how spacious the room was made to feel. The dining table and especially the computer desk feel like small pieces forced by a small space, and I can't see either of them being really effective for eating or working.

neat, clean, and organized, but not the best use of this space. i know there are space limitations but the bins and trays under furniture create a visually cluttered space. furniture with drawers and doors for storage will look neater.

This space does not look cluttered at all. Great use of a small space.

Clever use of space. Very neat, warm and organized.
In such small space most needs of a person has been satisfied with great taste.

Hi Fabiola,
You did a great job with your space! Very clean, organized and cozy. Love love the brick wall. The best to you.

Where did you buy the red(orange?) chair from the first picture?

Fabiola, your apartment looks great. I can't believe what you did in such a small space. You're not my old amica, Fabiola Cornacchione are you????

I love the whole apt. Can you tell me where you bought that dining table? It would be perfect in my own tiny studio! Thanks

I love this apartment!! It "feels" huge! Where did you get your computer table???

posted by Brenda G on 2006-03-23 09:49:35

I don't think the bins under the table look cluttered at all...maybe if she had them on TOP of the table. I think that if she had a table with mondo drawers in it, it would be a hulk of a table that didn't give the same feeling of "flow."

You totally tricked me with the mirror in the picture with the dining table...I kept looking at the floorplan trying to figure out how the doorway led to the living area! :) doh!

I really am amazed by what you fit into this space. there is really an area for every activity. It is very organized in that way, and seems VERY liveable for such a small, small space. The dining area with the ottomans is brilliant. Excellent job.

Kostia, I now what you are sayng about no large work surface, and I personally relate. If only one of the tables was one of those tricky fold out numbers! I assume not everyone needs a big work surface though.

I apologize if this has been asked and answered previously, but what did you use to develop that floorplan diagram?

What an effective use of a small space. Makes me think I should've done much more with my 600 sq. ft. place that I lived in while in NYC. Thanks for sharing.

Great floors and nice organization! I need a breakfast nook like the one you have...where did you get it?

Nothing here looks comfortable to me. Sorry.

I wouldn't call this "bold" by any means, but it is a very nice apartment and looks comfortable. A bigger single-piece desk would eliminate the confusion of all those spindley legs.

I really like the art above the computer as well.

Lovely floors!

Excellent use of space; possibly the best I've ever seen. The dedicated areas for each activity blend seamlessly into a cohesive whole. Also, this was done on a small budget, and looks far more expensive than it is.

The only thing I'd change are the bed linens; perhaps to an all white scheme with the bed pillows propped up to look like sofa pillows?

posted by Terry on 2006-03-25 00:00:39

Also, I would lower the bed to sofa level.

Fabiola: you got my insta-finalist vote. You have such a design sense and really know how to place furniture. I hope I get to see your next places. I wonder what you'd do with more money; it's hard to imagine getting better than this.

Looks uncomfy, especially the ottomans at the table. Not feeling it.

very very hip, minimal, modern, and chic without being all played-out mies van der rohe cock rock. i like your use of black and white prints/shapes to unify your exceptionally well-conceived, comfortable and convenient looking spaces. one of the few apts. in the whole competition with space, and light, for reading. jazzy.
