apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#44 - Mike's Coral Green

Name: Mike B.
Location: Coral Gables, Fl
Size: 600 s/f Studio Apartment

Favorite resource:

My friends from around the world. I look to every culture and socal structure and pick what is most efficient and pleasing.

What inspired you?

The inspiration for this space came twofold, one through the space itself and second through the economics of the times. The space was originally designed in 1930 then remodeled by Architect Gladys Margarida Diaz to its current form. The combination of modern and traditional architectural elements allows me to pull from both styles as well.

...It allows such combinations as the modern sleeper sofa with the traditional Argentinean matte table and chair. The second inspirational element, the economics of the times keeps with my environmental stance by the use of a smaller space, with fewer unnecessary items. The space must work efficiently and cleanly.

Design Tip:

Object specific lighting with dimmers.

soothing and pretty. i like how it is clean-lined, but still soft.

This is the first place I've seen where I really want to see it from the outside. That stone tease from the entry, maybe. It's very romantic looking.

Oh. My. God.

Visually, I find this to be stunning. You get a wow from me!

It seems so huge - bigger than my place! That high ceiling is a nice touch, allowing the space within to feel huge - and allow for that loft bed.

Please tell me how you:
a. not fall out of bed?
b. make the bed?

Oh, how I covet your computer set-up!

Do you climb over the beam to get into bed?

So jealous of your living in Coral Gables!

A great space, and KUDOS for the gracious recognition of the woman who handled the remodel.

You are a class act in a space that does you justice. And vice-versa.

Can I come for Mojitos next time I am in Miami?!

But I'll admit, that bed set up scares me.

I love the color scheme and the calmness of everything in this place, but then nighttime comes and my calmness is replaced by the sheer terror of getting into bed. What are those brown things hanging out in the rafters? They really break up the airy brightness of the ceiling in a weird way. Maybe if they were also white...?

posted by aquarabbit on 2006-03-24 12:45:36

Whatcha storin up there on top of the beams?
Just curious.

OH. MY. GOD. I am SO afraid of that BED!
how is it held up?
i see no supports?
and how do you not fall out!?!?
omg, just looking at it has raised my pulse to an uncomforatble level!

Wasn't this place featured on Small Space, Big Style?

I specifically remember that dual computer set up, the green paint, that couch, and the under-the-sink dishwasher.

Loved it on there, love it here. Isn't there a rooftop deck too? or was that a different place?

nice, very nice.

I was thinking "what's everyone freaking out about about the bed?" So, I look at the pictures again...scary! I didn't even notice it. I love the airiness of this apartment...but bed. is. scary. I don't know why I find it that way--I never fall out of bed. I guess just feeling like there would be the chance...

posted by Christine (the one in DC) on 2006-03-24 13:00:28

I do fall out of bed occasionally. Don't laugh.

On the other hand, if I'm sharing a bed with my mom or something, I can make a mental note before I go to sleep not to roll over that way and it seems to work. (I'm sure Mike has mastered this skill.) Of course, I fall out on the other side instead. I said don't laugh.

Lovely, but THE BED O_O!

posted by catriona on 2006-03-24 13:07:19

I must be missing something about the bed - doesn't the beam at the foot of the bed prevent falling out?

posted by Pixie on 2006-03-24 13:09:21

I would be more afraid of tripping over the beam if I get up in the middle of the night.

posted by Pixie on 2006-03-24 13:11:19

That's. the. bed?

Oh.

HELP!

If that entry the other week was designed for getting laid, this one is the exact opposite. Or else it guarantees no sleepovers.

What we are seeing in pic 3 is the foot of the bed, with the rest of the bed stretching back under the pointy ceiling, no?

posted by Pixie on 2006-03-24 13:14:12

Kellen, I had the same thought too. I'm pretty sure this is the same place. I thought it was great on the show and I like it here now (although I'm not quite loving it for some reason, so I'm waiting on voting until I get a better sense as to how I feel).

The bed isn't jutting out from the wall -- IIRC, it's supported by the kitchen and bathroom walls. What freaks me out about the bed is that SSBS made it clear that there isn't much head clearance! I'd end up black and blue with a bed like that!

posted by Virginia on 2006-03-24 13:16:44

I recall it looking a little differently on the show, a little darker, and not with the sofa (is that the Bo Concept one?). The show featured the kitchen area more, which I liked.

It has a nice feeling from the photos!

That ceiling is beautiful! What I wouldn't do to see palm trees, blue water, and sand right now... I really like your masks, wooden blinds, flooring, stone entry...it's so pretty.

The bed disturbs me. Not because of anything you've done, but because I would be scared to have a good romp in it! BOOM!

Regarding comments about the bed. It looks like a futon to me but I could be wrong. Those futons are so uncomfortable to sleep on. If that's what it is I can see how that would be the combination of both considering he/she lives in a studio apt.

Love the color scheme and the artwork on the walls. I think it really brings out the apt from looking dull and boring.

If I lived there the bed would not be up in the timbers. I might stick the computer up there.
Getting up in the morning must be an adventure...ohhh I just rolled out of bed and ahhhhhhh.....

Nice wall color!

posted by Amber on 2006-03-24 13:54:18

It has color, art, plants and a walk in closet that makes me just a little envious :) I love the way the art is bright and offset by the equally bright wall color with the furniture in neutral colors. I have a new favorite.

The bed is a little scary, but I guess that's one way to weed out the less adventurous ;)

Finally an entry from Miami!

I LOVE the colors. And the whole feel of it is light and airy and feels like Florida. I bet the tile floor feels nice and cool in the hot weather, too.

The setup with the bed would definitely not work, though. I'm not scared of heights, but not being able to wake up and swing my feet down to the floor? That would be a strange sensation.

posted by Sharon on 2006-03-24 14:36:49

Beauuuuuutiful! Very miami without being kitchy. I love the colors, the spaciousness, the high ceilings, and the organic looking palm-tree vase thing in the corner.

On the bed confusion:
When I first looked, I thought the bed was up in the rafters, over the beam and inside the triangle.

when I looked again, I realized the bed was actually protruding from the wall, below the beam. See where the ladder hits the floor? That's how far out the bed extends. It's just sticking out there with no railings or anything. I think that's what people are confused about.

i request an exception be made so that mike and anna can post more pictures of this bed set-up, if only to satisfy everyone's curiosity.

i love it, otherwise.

posted by liz on 2006-03-24 15:07:04

OOOHHH, Georgia, I finally see it! That angle is foreshortening the bed, and only a bit of the mattress actually achieves "diving board" status... bulk of the bed is actually up under the eaves, like a sparrow's nest.

Still seems to require the need to be nimble to get into that bed.

But, um, that's not such a bad pre-requisite. ;)

posted by patrick (the other one) on 2006-03-24 15:09:35

I don't fall out of MIKE's bed, I fall out of mine! Geez, I'd be dead, or having to dictate my typing. At first I thought we were looking at the SIDE of a single bed, not the foot of a double bed.
He could post another photo, but the explanations have cleared things up for me.

posted by Anna on 2006-03-24 16:03:16

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....I thought the whole bed was protruding. Still...I like a bed I can just fall into...but that's me. That sofa, if it does transform into a bed is really needed...for a.) getting some action from scardy cats b.) those days when, well, the martinis were mixed a bit strongly...

posted by Christine (the one in DC) on 2006-03-24 16:21:49

Click my name for the link, it's just the foot of the bed we're looking at.

THAT SOFA looks really great in entry #9, Christine's Airy Park View. I wanted it.

Then I saw it on HGTV's Freestyle (a show I hate even more after that episode).

Then I saw it here in Mike's. Still a great looking sofa. But I wonder how comfortable it is, and how many others will be buying it... alas, to be different.

posted by pbphoenix on 2006-03-24 16:31:26

Looks like nobody here traveled in a sleeping car of a train...spending a night on an overhead sleeper, in motion, with no safety bars and a bathroom at the end of corridor outside of your compartment.
It's fun, try it!

posted by Tat on 2006-03-24 16:48:40

The color, wooden shades and exposed beams give it a Hemingway feel. but what is that stuff on the beams - skis? storage should not be in the center of the ceiling. it is very distracting. also the furniture is not cohesive.

posted by Kate on 2006-03-24 17:19:57

This place is great, love the colours and layout. Would love to see a closer shot up into the loft bed if possible, just out of curiousity - since the rest of the place is so beautiful. Shoes on the door, great.

posted by Jaz on 2006-03-25 07:31:20

so do you have to climb over that beam, then? or does it swing open, like a gate?

i would need a coffee maker up there just so i could caffeinate enough to navigate that kind of obstacle in the morning.

again, otherwise, it's great.

I saw this apartment on Small Spaces Big Style...I can see now how you wouldn't fall off the bed, but alas a drunken night could change that:) Nevertheless, kudos on the really neat closet.

I saw this place on "Small Space, Big Style." Not shown in the pictures is the incredible kitchen, which includes and under-sink dishwasher. I believe the apartment was designed by the landlord (a lady, actually), who made a little complex for artists and such. As I remember, there is a roof terrace for the tenants.

I like the place, but, for some reason, not this particular loft bed. I also like the idea of a complex for artists. It may provide a sense of community.

Oh, funny, the bed only protrudes a little bit. Do you have to sleep with your feet under the beams? I bet it's fun to perch on the end of the bed, legs dangling off like Tarzan. Maybe what you need is a rope swing!

Also agree furniture is not cohesive, and I'm personally not a fan of having computers so visible, maybe could use screening or Built in option of some sort.
