This is the fourth of our 13 finalists. OMG. The videos just keep getting bigger budget!
Name: Jane & Darko
Location: East Village, New York
Size: 645 s/f 5th floor walk-up, full floor
Original Entry: Click Here
1. Who was your favorite entry and why? (other than your own apt.)
"There are many that we really like, but our favorite is Greg & Em's Silverlake Sanctuary. It's the one we could imagine living in, besides our own. As they said so well, the apartment "is a direct extension of our personalities, lifestyle and interests...." That's exactly how we feel. No doubt they look forward to going home every day.
Also, to us, the main purpose of a home is to make you feel happy, safe and inspired. Greg & Em?s use of color and their elegant solutions for displaying and enjoying the things and books they love do all of that perfectly.
And, perhaps most importantly of all, they have a good sense of humor."
2. Why you should be the champ?
"Our apartment exemplifies the idea that small spaces can be both practical and have great character without feeling overwhelmed by stuff. We read, cook, draw, do crafts, work and watch tv (even sometimes while we eat at the dining room table) and don?t have to hide things away afterwards to make the space look better; it?s designed to look its best when we?re really living the way we do.
We?ve used the space to its fullest, fitting every function we could want into 645sf, and don?t feel we lack for anything. We use every room every single day, and are continually happy to be in each of them. In our previous 1300sf rental we had much more stuff (or at least Jane did; Darko, being Swiss, owned only a pocket knife and a watch). After editing to only what we really love everything feels more special and valuable.
We want our apartment to give a sense of discovery and surprise with a little humor thrown in, balanced by a feeling of sanctuary. So far it seems to be working: we?re happy and no one ever wants to leave after a dinner party."
YAY!!! THE THICKET!!!! WOOOO!!!
My FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!
I love it. :)
I really like your space, but that video made me a little nauseous.
Oooh oooh oooh -- one of the several that I really loved! This is such a fun home without being a funhouse.
Ok, now that my moment of exuberance has passed - I really love the use of art in your place, as wella s the use of colour. The chalkboard wall is awesome, and the kitty = yay!
It's the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Apartment! I loved it before, and I love it now.
There are THIRTEEN finalists?! Oh god. This thing should wrap up just in time for the World Series.
Is that the Go Team as your sound track? Seeing so many more details makes me feel like we get a sense for who you are as people and that's as fun as getting to see such a cool space! What fun, quirky details. Good on ya and thanks for sharing!!
LOVE IT! LOVE IT!
this is a great apartment and your video makes me smile. : )
oh my, this is getting harder and harder. i have really loved all four of these so far. what i like so much about this one is the balance of sophistication and wit, the quirky/fun details mixed in with beautiful design. fantastic! (and bonus points for the cute kitties)
MY FAVORITE!!!
Sophisticated but not stuffy, well-designed but not sterile, elegant but not cold. Love the many, many witty touches, especially the painting over the bed, the kitchen wallpaper and the red table. I would kill to live in a space like this!
wow - thank you for sending in all those pics. i have to admit that i did not love your place first time around but seeing all the pics -- what great fun. your space looks happy and lived in and alive and enjoyed.
the money shot (if you'll pardon the expression)
is when the video swings into the hall
and you remember that this really is
just another crummy east village tenement
genius!
as is the use of the GoTeam soundtrack
LOVE your art, and the integration of your art
into your fun cozy home
when I saw the bear in the bedroom, I finally remembered this place, and it seemed so so long ago that we were
talking about it.
Was last month really three or four months ago?
this apartment is perfect in every way!
Luv the pocket door in the bathroom! I've been thinking about that myself. Where did you get yours and are you happy with it?
Jeez, I love this place too. I really really don't envy the judges. So many nice things it's hard to enumerate them all.
One small suggestion is to fish the TV cables through the wall, since your flat TV is already wall-mounted. I did this in my old rental and it's really pretty easy and makes for a much cleaner look.
Ooh, also I just noticed that you seem have a Modernica "case study" (ie, Eames ESU) storage unti for the media stuff. I am thinking about a similar unit for myself. How do you like it?
This is apartment is gorgeous and one of my favorites. I'm not sure that they provided any unique solutions to their space issue. But I'd move in in a heartbeat.
this is my favouriute entry hands down.
speaking of hands, i didn't see any pulling
at the library card drawers. maybe i'm delusional from the dayquil?
I don't know how I missed this apartment the first time around, but it is AMAZING. I think it may qualify as a hands down favorite.
They also have good taste in other apartments! Greg and Em's was probably my favorite west coast apt.
Great, great, great!
Chewbacka (sp?)and the gang was the topper for me!
I absolutely love the colour and brightness of your place (something that was not so evident from the initial pictures.
You have really used art to enjoy your space -was that a FAB style lamp in the living room? Also, where did you get the sliding door (closet in bedroom into bedroom door?) great use of space!
-thanks for the peek!
Everything looks good except the tv wires all over the place.
i love, love, love the cole and sons tree paper in the kitchen and want it myself for a small wall. I'm so glad to see it in use here!
Wow, I loooooove this apartment! Fun, chic, cozy....they must get prizes!! I don't know how I missed this one either! It has induced such enthusastic exclamation points!
I loved it before, and now I am blown away. It is fabulous. I can't say enough.
When I grow up, I want to be like Jane and Darko.
I love lots and lots of this, but it doesn't completely hold together for me as a cohesive space. And it is good space planning, but nothing catastrophic.
Now, this is being EXTREMELY picky in a very close horse race.
Just curious where you got the chandelier?
Jane,
I'm in love with your style and have another question for you--in regards to your bathroom sink, where did you find the actual basin?
Thanks so much for your generous decorating help. Crossing my fingers that you win..
I still love this place. I love the art everywhere, the brick, the way the dining area is incorporated into the LR, the beautiful kitchen. And of course, the bear. And the cat.
I don't envy the judges making decisions. There's so many great entries.
hi all, thanks again *so very much* for all your amazing comments! really, we're honored.
to answer some questions:
Laika, the bathroom sink basin is by Porcher (called Como), and we bought it on faucet.com, here's the link: http://www.faucet.com/decor/product.pl?mid=8488&fh=White&Ntt=porcher+vessel&N=222&Dx=mode%2Bmatchallpartial&Nty=1&D=porcher+vessel&Ntx=mode%2Bmatchallpartial&Ntk=all
drumwell, can you elaborate on how you threaded the cables through the wall? honestly they haven't bothered us much so far but now perhaps they will....
and yes, we have a case study unit under the tv that holds all our dvds, as well as the cable box, ps2, etc. we love it. i've had it through three apartments over the last 6 years or so and it's worked well in every place. it holds very heavy tvs as well, in case you ever chose not to wall mount.
Tanya, the embroidered Star Wars crew is by an artist named Megan Whitmarsh; i believe she's based in LA, and everything i've ever seen of hers is great. and the lamp in the living room is the Bourgie lamp; i think you can get it at DWR, although i don't know if they still have it in black.
and Tanya & Heather C, we had a contractor (a really great one, by the way: Dutchman Contracting based in NJ) do some of the work, including anything involving glass, like the wall between the kitchen and bedroom and that pocket door. they used a normal solid core door but cut the interior out of it and installed the glass themselves. i'm sure you can find them already made though. it really saves space; before we changed it the bathroom door slammed into the toilet every time you opened it.
Chris, we got the chandelier at ABC Carpet. they had a similar one for a long time that i coveted but couldn't afford, and then one day i went in to admire it again and it had a "sold" tag on it. devastated, i asked the salesguy if it was true, and he said "yes, but we just got this other one in that costs half as much; i'm sure it's mistagged." i paid for it as fast as i could ;)
and erica, yep, that's the Go Team's "Feelgood by Numbers".
thanks again for the nice words and great questions.
This apartment seems to be a showroom of everything that has been recently trendy (examples would be the whole bathroom, the outdoorsy-campy theme, wallpaper with landscape images, the animal pillows...the list goes on). I just dont feel like there is anything that actually ties any of these spaces together and makes them feel like an actual home instead of a modern interiors gift shop, but maybe some people really like that. Dont get me wrong, I only wish I had enough money to spend on every item that caught my eye!
WOO-HOO! I'm so psyched this entry made the finals... I love it all: the quirky charm, the personal stamp, the sense of fun. This space made me smile upon first viewing of the initial entry and continues to hold up for me!
I would like to come and visit. Your apartment is so unlike my apartment. Yours is bright and cheery and colorful. That strange, modern light fixture in the kitchen is kind of scary but I want it. I think I want it because it's so strange. I also want to buy that oil painting of the boat above the card catalog. Best of all --- COOL BEAR. I've always been into cool bears. Grrrrr. Good Luck in the contest Jane and Darko.
Shower curtain and kitchen wallpaper...where in the world did you find those? I love them, and I really love your apartment. I like that it's not a breakable/untouchable modern home--it looks like you actually live there. And it's a little whimsical, too! All of your designer pieces are on my wishlist. :) I hope you win!
Wonderful! I too missed this one the first time around. It's a great juxtoposition to my other favorite, the restrained and minimalist Walnut wood box...
I LOVE the Cole and SOn's wall paper and I like that you used it broken up on a wall with cabinets.
I love the blackboard paint and the restraint you use on it... i have a huge bunch of it but I scribble all over it all the time and it looks a mess. useful, but a mess.
And loved the video and music, the video specially because I got to see what as in the card catalog drawers. Great way of storing a collection, of having stuff without the burden of "having it."
I love the use of the fold-down table as a sofa table/room divider till dinner time; i love the little frames on the wall. Little art is great. It's a terrific space. I need to watch the video again. OH: where did you get the shower curtain? and the bed...did you build it?
there is a lot of trendy stuff in there, but I get the sense that you really LIKE it, that trends finally caught up with your tastes. Wonderful place. Such a strong, fun and unwaverinig point of view.
This apartment is simply spectacular!
I find this place to be a very gracious, welcoming, expansive place. The big red table welcomes lots of people. The books are exansively on display, welcoming browsing. The bear is unpretentious, outdoorsy. Although not big by square footage, there's enough for everything and it says come on in.
I missed this one too! Really love it. I've had my eye on that wallpaper for a long time and the deer cushion. I can't even resent these guys for having them since they've clearly had so much fun and been so creative. I never thought I could like those Starke stools and yet, in this context, I do. Also thought I was getting over the desire for a chandelier but, I just hadn't seen this one before. I love the choice of theme and the way it is applied, lightly not forced, a creative springboard rather than a straightjacket.
Jane,
Such a lovely apartment. Really inspiring. Could you tell us where you got the red dining table?
Thanks,
Kimber
This almost looks to me like a showhouse, where different designers did different rooms (even though the faux botanical/bois theme is a bit of a constant). And to be sure, humor runs throughout (which I love).
But the difference in handling the rooms is why I don't give this higher marks.. I think a smaller space needs some more specific repetition to hold it together and not chop up the experience.
But it IS fun, lovely, and full of enviable pieces displayed with great wit. And it yields some KILLER magazine-caliber shots, to be sure. ) And I say that as an absolute good thing!!!)
And as to why the guests linger after dinner... judging by your space, you obviously have wit, humor and charm... so even if the guests sat on cardboard boxes, I'm guessing they'd still linger! :)
Tony G -
You CAN have that kitchen light fixture FROM DWR FOR $750 (!)
Which - though I love A LOT about this place (mostly the NOT designer-y pieces) - is why I kind of concur w/ 'the other patrick'.
It's already oozing so much, fresh off the rack EXPENSIVE trends and EXPENSIVE DWR pieces. Do they need more? Really?
Do they realize how RICH they are living compared to most? How much more MONEY they obviously have to spend than most (from owning to furnishing to re-modeling)?
I think that's their reward. Oh, and the fab space ;)
Jane and Darko, you have obvisouly hit the life lottery already (some others in this competition have too). That's pretty darn good.
The more I look at this entry, the more I fall for it. I definitely hope these folks get a DWR prize. The chalk-paint in the kitchen filled me with an inexplicable sense of glee! Did they draw chalk labels for the stuff inside? LOVE it!
hi again--
Kimber, the red table is the Strut table from BluDot in watermelon.
Pam H, the shower curtain is Tord Boontje's Until Dawn curtain in white, you can buy it from various places online, including the MoMA design store, i believe. and we bought the bed in Switzerland (where Darko is from); not sure of where it was, sorry!
and esther & Tony G, if interested in the agave light fixure i suggest looking around a little more online, you can find it much cheaper other places than DWR.
the other patrick, i do understand where you're coming from about the rooms feeling all different, but actually we kind of planned that. we like each function having a completely different feel, the living area expansive and bright, the bedroom more intimate and "natural/woodsy" etc. the apartment is meant to get more intimate the further back you go into it. and for us it somehow makes the space seem bigger, we can visit different areas for a different feeling all within 650sf.
and yes, we just renovated this space last fall, so there is a lot of stuff that came out around then. every time we found something we liked it would show up in 10 magazines. oh well, we *like* it! and we're happy now, and feel amazed and lucky every time we go home after work.
also, to address the question of whether we "deserve" to win a contest based on how much we saved to spend on our first home together (personal space being something very important to both of us since we work a lot).... well, i certainly can't speak for all the contestants (although i have a feeling many would say the same), but we would've entered the contest had there been no cash prize at all, to be honest.
i've lurked on this site a long time, getting great ideas and resources, and thought the contest was a wonderful idea. we're proud of our home and have loved getting wonderful feedback from so many people, and hopefully we've inspired a few others for their spaces in return for what we've gotten from this site. it's also been really great to see what all the other contestants have done with their spaces, so completely different than ours but so amazing in their own personal ways.
so, prize or no prize, this has generally been a great experience, even including the insane amount of time i spent trying to figure out how to make a decent video with a canon elph. i admit that we really didn't realize quite how intense it would be to have our home (and by extension, ourselves) on display and open for comments, even mostly positive ones, but we've learned a lot from it, certainly. and i do feel like i've already hit the life lottery, in many ways, no doubt.
so, thanks AT.
"we *like* it! and we're happy now, and feel amazed and lucky every time we go home after work."
That's the best prize of all.
I adore this home simply because it makes me feel amused, entertained, relaxed, hip and un-self-conscious - all at the same time! All the good feelings you want to have when you walk into some one's space.
Also, your ability to mix high-end designer appliances with IKEA candle holders, non-exceptional-flea-market paintings, and your own art work is so impressive because it shows a true ability to edit according to your own tastes and personality, and a kind of integration that is so hard to create in a living space.
By the way, are those black rocks on your bathroom floor?! I love it! So many sensations are addressed and stimulated!
Thanks for letting us peek in.
I think this apartment's decor is so offbeat and congratulate the owners on beating to the beat of their own drummer.
My problem with the choice of this apartment in the finals is precisely that it is so offbeat and quirky.
You guys have to win!!!! I love seeing all the new details. I just showed your video to my boyfriend (who has absolutely NO interest in interior design whatsoever) and even he really liked it. Everything is just so whimsical yet sophisticated at the same time. Bravo!
WOW! This one makes me rethink Im & David as the winners. Nice selection of vintage pieces, great eclectic mix. How you played with the lighting in the bathroom, the selection of that shower curtain, the mirror and the sink, just brilliant. The art pieces, awesome (like the Star Wars one especially). The kitchen is awesome with the blackboard paint, pull outs and very cool birch wallpaper. Love the bear art and forest mural in the bedroom, plus the functional walk-in and dual sliding door.
Gosh, I think you guys are the winners now.
I luv-luv-luv this one.
I also LOVE the chalkboard cabinets. How did you apply the paint to the cabinets (primer, etc?)? What was the surface underneath? AND... how do they stand up to wear and tear?? Amazing, fun, livable space. Good luck!
Jane--
Thanks for so graciously addressing my earlier point. As I think I said, a REALLY MINOR ONE at that.
I'd linger after dinner, to be sure! :)
Do either of you work as prop/photo stylists? If not, I think you have missed your calling (and from me, that is HIGH praise, since interiors magazines are my Bible!!)
hi meka, thanks! the chalkboard cabinets are just Ikea kitchen cabinets in the flat white finish (the other ones across the way in the kitchen are glossy white, which is not good for the chalkboard paint). you can get the chalkboard paint at most paint stores; now i think they even have a magnetic chalkboard paint. anyway, it says this on the can as well, but do NOT use primer; apparently the chalkboard paint will then not really stay on well for whatever reason. you can sand the cabinets before painting, but they seem to hold up pretty well either way, actually.
and p(too), no problem, i find you to be one of the most gracious critics on this site, which is a great thing, and makes it very easy to answer graciously ;) and no, no stylists here, although that sounds like a lovely job (as i sit here in front of a computer all day).
Where, where, where did you get the card catalog piece???
only 2 flaws in an otherwise perfectly interesting and witty space:
- don't like those sink bowls on top of a table surface. personal opinion, plus i think it'd be hard to keep that miniscule area in between dry.
- black towels!!! so 80s bachelor style.
For some reason, the computer elves are eating my postings, so I'll try once again to send out a big congratulations to you on this happy living space. I'm glad to see a space with personality and good (quirky) taste get through to the finals. I love the birch wallpaper in the kitchen! I'm jealous of you for that card catalog, and join lesterhead in asking how you obtained it. For anyone who remembers libraries pre-computer, those are a treasure.
You sound like nice people who view life with a sense of humor. Very rare anywhere, especially in the design world. Especially here, it seems!
I am very fond of bears.
...and just like before, I forgot to say that you have a very good eye for light fixtures (all of them). I have wanted that chandelier for ages.
Jax, I have a similar vessel-sink set-up. You just wipe down the vanity top daily (even in all those tiny areas!). I use those pre-moistened clean-up towels that come in a plastic dispenser. Not hard to maintain at all. In my most recently redone bath (which also serves as a guest powder room), however, I did an undermount sink, because the vessel sinks do splash more. It's a matter of personal taste and patterns of use. If the sink is used daily, it can be wiped down daily.
Black towels...makes me think of David Sedaris, and if any of you know why...well. I will only buy white ones myself.
hi Pat, i think the issue is that there are 2 of these pages, one on AT LA and one here, and i think your other posts are over there somewhere, or else my answer to you got lost in the ether as well...
in any case, the catalog is actually a lantern slide catalog from a school (old 2.5"x4" glass slides they used to use before the little plastic ones). we got it at the flea market here in new york (when it was on 26th st) many years ago. one drawer still has slides in it, mostly of Franz Schubert and his home, etc. the rest we've filled with tiny collections of things.
and black (or dark) towels are *also* good for not showing make-up residue, ya know....
that exposed brick and vibrant red table with the whimsical chandelier is so inviting...I vote for this one!
Hi Jane,
Re: your email from 4/11 --you can reach me at elaine_w@mac.com
Elaine
Oh... how do I love your apartment... Let me count the ways!
I love your wall of books, we have a ton of books and i've always wanted to have them be more incorporated into our interior design. to many people try to hid them away but yours fit in beautifully!
I love the framed print near the floor behind your chair in the living room. Is that Dzama? He rocks!
I love the wall paper in your kitchen! LOVE it! Did you do anything special to protect it from kitchen splashes?
Holy light fixtures batman! LOVE them. Cool lighting makes such a difference, and in my opinion, totally worth saving up for. It's like sculpture for the ceiling!
I could go on but let me just end by saying, I mostly just lurk on this site but had to tell you how inspired i am by your home! Well done, I hope you guys win!
I love your apartment!!! It's both cheerful and warm. Hope you and Darko win!
Jane -- I figured out the split, but only after I'd repeated my posts. Ooops. But how cool that you found the Schubert slides in that chest! Most of the stuff at my local flea market is stolen goods. It's where you go to find your things if yur garage gets broken into. I love NYC, where you can find such treasures.
Hello Jane & Darko,
Your apartment is gorgeous (my personal favourite, no doubts).
I love your kitchen wallpaper, as well the green trees one in the bedroom. I have been looking for something similar for awhile, would you care to share with me the source.
Thanks for your time.
Best, and good luck (hope you win)!
Claudia
My favorite part of the entire home is the scenic paper on the wardrobe doors. It's also probably the ONLY thing I could do too (uh...if someone could to the wallpapering part and loan me some money).
All the built-in bookshelves are GREAT. The hints of the outdoors throughout would be like going on vacation to the country everytime you walk in the door to your own home.
The chandelier against the bricked and rebricked and rebricked again wall kind of makes me giggle, in a totally good way. Like someone had hung such an elegant thing against a sheer rock face.
That giggly feeling is abounding in your home, for me. Hey! Look! There's a dresser in the forest! There's a fawn on my chair! There's a bear above my bed!
I had to double check the fridge/cat picture to make sure it was a real cat. I have a cat-shaped pillow sort of like your fawn, and I wondered if maybe it was yet another "Hey, Look!" item.
By the way, since you have one of the larger sized apartments, festivities for the contestants are being held at your place. ;)
Hi Claudia,
The wallpaper is by Cole and Son
Collection: New Contemporary
name: Woods
code: 69-12147
They are based in London but I'm sure if you email customer services they will be able to advise you where your nearest stockist is located.
www.cole-and-son.com
customer.service@cole-and-son.com
Karen, thanks for answering that! Claudia, their distributor here in the states is Lee Jofa (www.leejofa.com). you can order samples through the Cole & Son website or from Lee Jofa, but when you want to order the paper it has to be through Lee Jofa, and we had to get a friend of a friend who is a designer to order it for us because they don't sell direct to the consumer.
Sheree, we put in a piece of glass in front of the wall paper between the top cabinets and the bottom ones. it slides in at the top behind the electrcal strip, and then rests on the granite backsplash, so that it keeps the grease and moisture away but is still easy to remove for cleaning or if we ever decide to replace the paper with something else. it seems to be working great; no sign of any wear on the paper behind.
and the hand-colored print down low behind the chair is not Marcel Dzama (although i like him very much too), it's by a guy named Shawn McCreeden, and it's of a bunch of hyenas eating a poor zebra. we call that area the Cats' Art Show ;)
and Andree, thanks, what nice compliments!! we are thrilled to have produced a giggly feeling in you; it makes us feel the same way.
Ooooh, Jane, I just noticed that you had the image on the wardrobe also transfered onto your bed/throw pillows. VERY cool.
I was browsing around last night and kept finding neat things I wanted to put in your place (if there was room, LOL) or in my place (if I had the money):
http://dutchbydesign.com
They have several "Walk in the Woods" items, like curtains in the Textiles area. But gee whiz, $585.00 per panel? I don't think so.
One thing I did see that you might like and be able to create...well, a couple things. One is the "Log Light" in the table lamps section.
The other is the lampshade for the hanging lamp version of "Shady Tree"...either with the print on the OUTSIDE or with the print on the INSIDE (that will only show when the light is lit).
I can see either of those kinds of items (log or tree/scenic) in the bedroom, although I don't know if you could fit the hanging lights you have with lampshades (then again, think of the miracle powers of duct tape, hehehe).
Seemed like too cool of an idea not to pass on, just in case you can use it somewhere.
I haven't viewed the video, but I'll try to load it when the contest is over. I'm on dial-up, it's soooo slow. I didn't want to view videos because not everyone did them...and it takes soooo long to load them...and if there is any spinning whatsoever in the video, I'll be needing to lie down or worship the porcelain god. Gee, just thinking about spinning makes me dizzy.
By the way, if Darko only had a pocket knife and a watch, and no clothing, where did he keep the pocket knife? It's not just your apartment or it's decor that keeps people after the dinner party, it's your own sense of humor that delights.
One more thing...I don't know how much light you get from outside all year 'round. Or how much light you like either. Or what your view is out your windows. But in those bookcase/window niches, you could have acrylic or glass mirror cut to fit the SIDES of the opening or on the BASE of the opening.
You can even try it tomorrow, just grab aluminum foil and see if you like the effect. The foil won't be nearly as reflective/focused as mirror, but you'll see what it does. The sun angling down on the bottom of the niche in picture 2 of the finalist slideshow would then be bounced back up at the ceiling. Which then bounces off the ceiling to help illuminate the spaces farther from the windows.
Sun hitting the sides of the niche would be reflected down, onto the floor, like the sun is already doing, just a different angle...but you gain the view reflected in the mirrors of the outside.
I mentioned to Christine in her finalist post about acrylic mirror too, there's a link in that thread to a picture of an acrylic mirror in a fireplace box.
The acrylic mirror runs about $6.00 sq ft here in S.F. I found it at the local plastics store (by phone). Since it's acrylic, it's lightweight, and could be "installed" via double-sided sticky tape.
I'm one of those people who NEEDS light and I'm still trying to figure out a way to put mirrors on my balcony to reflect in what little light there is during "summer" (here on the coast, "summer"=high fog) so the place isn't a dark cave. Even if there WAS sun, the angle is off during summer and NO SUN comes in my apartment at all.
Again, maybe it's something you can use, not use, or save for a future place where the cozy thicket turns into the deep forest and you need the extra light.
Great site, dutchbydesign.com.
Compliments to Jane and Darko for having a bookcase that contains books that look like they actually get read. I just noticed that another entrant's home has the books arranged by color and size. Shiver...
Pat, I just love that bookshelf. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have the ability to have ALL MY BOOKS IN ONE PLACE. I have EIGHT different places with books. I might actually be able to FIND the book I was looking for if I had that wall o' books as Jane and Darko do.
I've been paying special attention to the way books are stored in this contest. I hated the way mine looked on the shelves in one area and I put up a cheesy tension rod and sheers to cover it a bit. I can still get at the books easily.
Well...anyway...do we know when the winners will be announced? This week, right? At the parties?
Andree i love that dutchbydesign site. most of the designers i love are Dutch, actually: Jongerius, Wanders, Tord Boontje, Droog in general, etc. everythign is well thoiught-out and very well-crafted, but always with a sense of humor. i think so much design in the states and in most of europe takes itself a little too seriously...
and we actually get tons of light in the living room, despite how it may look in the photos, but thanks for the mirror idea! very clever.
Congratulations Jane and Darko!
Curtis said that you made it into the winner's circle, in the top four! Woo hoo! So pleased to see you made it.
Andree
Congratulations! I don't know how I missed this one in the original voting. LOVE IT. Bookshelves, a decent-sized TV, and even a card catalog. I'd love to have a card catalog. And RED! Love everything about it except the scary bear. :)
your place is fantastic!!! congratulations!
may i ask where you got that very special and fabulous deer pillow?
Nice place ! I want to live there, too !
This might have been mentioned before, but where did you get the cute log pillows on your bed?
4shyzl, mynzl.
Hi Jane,
I taped the Oprah show you appeared on last month, and ever since have been thinking about your wardrobe with the photo mural on the door. I LOVE it. Love everything about your apartment actually, but this photo mural has me especially intrigued, because we are installing a wall of IKEA Pax cabs in our living room. If I'm not mistaken, that's what your wardrobe is? I would love to do an effect like that over all the doors - an expanse of about 20 feet.
I just today thought of poking around Apartment Therapy to see if I could dig up any how-to info, not realizing your apartment was featured here! I have no idea what this process is, and am really hoping you still check in here and can explain it to me. I'm also wondering how it holds up over time. Since the cabs will be in the living room, and we have a 6-year old, they'll get some wear and tear.
So glad you shared the apartment with us, it's inspiring. Thanks!
