(This is the third of our 6 honorable mentions, which go to submissions that did not make the finals. They are awarded purely at the judge's discretion. Each honorable mention receives a special gift from DWR.)
From Andrianna Shamaris:
"I really quite like pphillipp's digs. I love the dash of colour in contrast with the white and the fact that, unlike a few too many, it isn't trying too hard. The fact that it brings the outside in is very cool as well: all the green plants work well with the white. All in all, very clever, clean and calm. It's very well edited. This place would be ruined with more furniture, even from DWR!"

harumph
Hooray! I greatly admire this space. Congrats!
Bravo!!!!!!! Excellent pick IMO.
-Kellen-
I didn't know a blow-up mattress on the floor was "clever and sexy". Good pick.
Over-all, sounds like this competition is all about the decor...very disappointing!
Yeah - flophouse chic.
This is really a great example of someone doing a lot with a little and I'm glad he got some recognition. Congratulations, pphilipp!
I loved the photos of this space.
Congrats pphilipp!
This one is my favorite and the most inspiring, despite the bumpy air mattress, which I'm sure pphillipp will deal with in his own time. I have only just noticed you're a palindrome, pphillipp, which makes me like you more!
Doesn't the "h" negate the palindrome?
Yes! Fantastic job on the shoestring budget. Somewhat agree with judge Adrianna re: potentially "ruining" this space by adding more furniture. The space looks good as-is to me. So, use that DWR certificate wisely, pphilipp; I'm sure you'll (continue to) make the right design decisions! Congrats.
I'm confused by Minks' disappointment that the contest seems to be all about the decor. What else would be it be about?
the "h" is the wabi-sabi* in his palindrome
just like this pleasant lovely space near the snowy sea
bravo adrianna!
bravo pphillipp!

bravo andrianna tambien
(clears throat)
This is such a fabulous apartment for a cerebral person who still wants a comfortable place to sit and who needs those research materials. Congrats, pphillipp!
Dagnabit! you're right, I either need coffee or to get the H out of here. Thanks Guido.
So, if a place is an honorable mention, does that mean it's out of contention for being a finalist?
yay pphillihpp!
yay! congrats.
*smiling broadly* - THANK YOU, adrianna & all kind posters. and guido, you needn't have cheerled (that's past tense of the verb "to cheerlead) just cuz i loved your bathroom - but thanks!
nasty commenters - i send you my flophouse love. in palindrome form.
Congradulations, I like your use of color and austerely elegant style. I would not have ever come up with such a white-heavy scheme but I love it in your space.
But, buy a futon with your prize! It's said with love. :)
pphillipp..CONGRATS! I love your place. It has a serene, calming quality to it.
it is very skillful use of limited resources but the living room makes me terrified of spilling something. all that white!
i have to say that unlike everyone else, the mattress doesn't bother me nearly as much as the kitchen chairs.
oh good. i'm glad this one was recognized. although it's not supposed to be a 'personality contest' i think those of us that like your place so much, do so because we like what it says about who you are and how that relates to the nice person we've come to know on this site. great job.
Damn! I wanted you to win! I guess this will have to do :(
Congratulations.
I'm very happy for you Mr. pphillipp.
Tony G.
I loved your space, pphillipp, and I absolutely would have voted it number one of all the spaces. Seeing the simplicity took my breath away.
I am very surprised this entry is not in the finals!
2 out of 3 judges favor mattresses on the floor? Are we really serious that bed (an air mattress, no less) on the floor is good design? Am I alone on this?
People -- that is an air mattress on the floor! I can dig the idea to celebrate thrifty design and I get that hes got a cool, breezy style. The photos are good. I get that. And pphillipp is a friendly guy (no hard feelings - sincere congratulations).
But, forgive me, hes proved scavenger talent with the kitchen chairs. All I'm saying is get some more free furniture with style and deflate the mattress.
Have you ever been on an air mattress? They arent comfortable. At all. An air mattress is what you pull out for guests when you don't want them to stay with you. Or when you want to fill a picture next to a plank of potted grass.
This space, yes, including the air mattress, is wonderful. pphillipp spent less than $200.00 to achieve a calm, restful, livable space. Of course, there are things that can be achieved with more money. duh. But as it is, the apartment is beautiful. The plants at the edge of the "daybed" are evidence that this apartment in a masterpiece of intention.
desk -
honestly, it's very comfortable. maybe i have low standards? and by the way - it's not grass.
my first reaction is to say that if i found a groovy piece to replace it, i'd take it - but i'm not sure i would. having moved 10 times in the last 25 years, i like that my "couch" deflates, and can be transported in my shoulder bag. i'm having giddy fantasies of having ONLY inflatable furniture. (that's a joke; no it's not; yes it is...)
but because josie was so charming, i'll consider a futon (but not from the street. ew.)
btw, thanks everyone, again for the nice comments.
desk was ok until the snarky last paragraph ;)
Okay - that looks like a jade plant in there, too. Apologies.
I'm not suggesting that you buy a couch and carry it with you the next time you move. Or that you even spend money. I'm just saying that if you have the skill to get good free chairs, then what happened to the seating in the living room? The whole deal with free is that you can leave it when you go. Just like the people who left those chairs.
But seriously. Seriously. Can you really pass off a blow up mattress with a sheet on it as inflatable "furniture" and say it *works* because you can deflate it for a quick jet and therefore that is good design. Ok, ok, you would break your $200 budget, but you could just get inflatable chairs and sofas, too? Link:
Yay pphillip! I am very happy that you are getting an honorable mention. I had plans at grad school last summer to live a monkish life in an austere setting to enhance my creativity, and it just plain didn't work - I was on the first hitched ride i could get to target for a dash of colour and texture. I'm definitely not a cool, but I envy your ability to pull off cool so well. I happen to like the idea of an inflatable mattress as well, much better than my current guest bed/tv sitting spot (a 15 year old double bed).
desk, sorry that my having got some positive feedback is annoying you. my apartment's not perfect, never said it was.
but anyone who wants to see some gruuuuuvy (and some just plain scary) stuff, check out the link on my name.
rr- I agree with Minks that the contest is about more than decor. I think viewers are not reading the contest criteria. It includes efficiency and special challenges. According to contest rules beauty and stylistic acheivement and decor is only 1/3 of what readers and judges are asked to evaluate each submission on.
Desk- I agree and really don't think the air mattress works as permanent furniture. It is more of a temporary thing for out of town guests.
pphillip-Having said that above, I too am impressed with your framed paint chips as well as the dining set. Congratulations.
I slept on an aerobed air mattress for about 6 months and it was more comfortable then many more expensive mattresses out there.
Congrats pphillipp, nice job.
regards,
trillium
It's all about context. If you had said that a great tip is to hide things in plain sight on the back of the john, then it would have been considered clever. The positive feedback is a testament to how much people like you, and your design, personally. Obi already said that.
If you did have one of these old pieces of blow up furniture like those shown on retro modern - I would have thought it was sort of crappy as furniture, but cool idea overall.
Congrats pphillipp! I envy the amount of natural light that you have and the creative stick-to-itiveness of keeping things within your means. Putting a moratorium on spending is one of the hardest things to accomplish. Excellent.
He absolutley deserves this, his space is great!!
Pphilip:
Your bed (or is it the daybed?) is almost exactly the same (at least in concept) as a daybed/bench in Luis Barragan's house. I always thought it the height of elegance!
I don't want to encourage Mr. Desk by acknowledging his comments but...really! Have we not had enough nastiness on this site? Behave already, Sir! I know you can do better!
