Small Cool 2006: Judges On David & Im

1st Place Winner (tie): David & Im's Onespace

This home is breathtaking. It is a place where adults live, which I adore. On the checklists of efficiency, beauty and problem solving, David and Im rock all three. If there is any criticism its that this home feels like it is only for David and Im. Perhaps this is the point of a perfect space, but it leaves me feeling slightly uninvited, if that makes any sense.

David & Im was clever, sexy, imaginative [no ikea...better to go to home depot and do it yourself.] industrial, sleek, organic.

It IS the coolest, smallest apt and there was no competition for me...miles ahead.

Loft spaces with an industrial look usually strike me as cool spaces to attend a party in, but I wouldn't want to live there. This unit is an exception and it gets my vote for managing an airy and peaceful appearance in a single small space.

Obviously highly edited in regard to furnishings and color, it looks pure but not austere. The big curtain effectively hides the primary storage space to cut down on visual clutter. The space is so restrained that the low wall of blocks in various earth tones actually stands out as a focal point. I want to read books and drink tea in this space on a long rainy day.

David & Im took an amazing space and made it that much better.

Congrats, this was my pick as well. Although I think all the finalists are great.

I so agree with this one! But why dis Ikea, Adrianna? Lots of people don't have the time, ability, transportation, or anything else needed for Home Depot DIY. (Tools, for instance.)

Great pick! I had unexamined anxiety about how functional the space is but loved it nonetheless.

Great poster boy for AT as well--right on the money.

Congratulations!

Pat: I don't think Adrianna was necessarily dissin' Ikea. As someone who has a few Ikea pieces himself (though we're now trying to rid ourselves of them, except for storage solutions), I found it refreshing to see an interior that seemed devoid of what has become an extremely popular, if not easy, solution for most (for the very reasons you noted). I think she was pointing out their unique solution versus the popular one: DIY versus pre-made. I think that's worthy of note...Ikea just happens to be the most popular and/or well known modern-for-the-masses retailer.

I am disappointed Silverlake didn't place! It was my pick. As much as I admire the ingenuity and drama of Onespace, it makes me nervous--probably because of the agility demanded to navigate the apartment. Still, and especially since the pros apparently got knocked out of the running, Onespace is a deserving champion.

But I wish Silverlake had won more recognition for its lovely, quiet qualities.

Henrietta: You make us blush in an "awww-shucks-push-dirt-with-the-foot" sorta way :)

Love all the spaces, but I agree with Henrietta! I was really disappointed that Silverlake didn't make the cut. Hope you can put more info about the owners!

I need to chime in as well. Silverlake got screwed. David and Im deserve their win, but Silverlake not in the top four floors me. Maybe one of the judges wasn't aware the place didn't already come that way? eyeroll

i'm kind of boggled why silverlake didn't place at least in the top 3. they utilized their space well and had BOATloads of charm.

i like david and im's too and they deserve to be on top. it's just that i also think that the silverlake entry was very creative in their use of space and color. and the fact that their pad is as organized as it is despite their knick knacks deserves more points, i think. it had clean lines, great use of space and color AND it was absolutely fun and had lots of personality.

oh well.

426 Onespace
442 LA Zen
645 Thicket
450 Hakarl + Jili

639 Silverlake

Since the Thicket is larger that Silverlake, so much for my theory that square footage was a big reason Silverlake didn't place.

Whew, that Onespace is tiny!
