Small Cool 2006: Judges On Hakarl & Jili

4th Place Winner: Hakarl & Jili (Sorry for the confusion Friday. Jane & Darko is now fixed & we ARE moving on...)

Terrific use of bold color and pattern--I especially like the supervivid yellow wall and how the color highlights the moldings. The yellow itself is great looking with the wood floors--I wouldn't have guessed they would work so well together. The deep color on one end of the main room with the big stripes on the other make it seem larger.

The bedroom wisely tones it way down with a simple black and white scheme with one decorative flourish. One Arco-style lamp in the main room would be enough for me however. It is interesting to me that so many of the New York spaces (in the contest) have a distinct LA aesthetic.

Color, cozy, character, w/o clutter. Took a small space and gave it all the aspects of a larger space with out falling into the traps others have.

Clearly, I have a soft spot in my heart for the use of tape on walls. I also have another soft spot for the adaptation of one person's discarded waste into something extraordinarily functional.

Hakarl and Jill incorporated both of these elements towards very successful ends. The glass doors hinged together and the masking tape stripes were key in my decision making process.
