apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#29 - Lex & Lynn's Modern Haven

Name: Lex & Lynn
Location: Financial District, NYC
Size & Type: 610 sf Studio with Home Office

Favorite resource: eBay, West Elm, Ikea, Crate and Barrel

Pitch: We have decorated our apartment to truly reflect who we are. A newly married couple; young professionals; travel buffs; photography enthusiasts, etc. We want minimal, tasteful and modern fixtures in our apartment but at the same time we want to make it feel warm and inviting...

Pitch Cont'd: We have also made creative solutions to maximize the space that we live in by adding a kitchen counter that serves as our dining table and storage for kitchen and media items. Also by adding a small reading corner for extra seating space and hangout area. Please give us a chance to show you more of our apartment! =)

4-27-kath3.jpg

Your favorite element: We love our small bedroom! It is actually a home office that we converted to a bedroom. It still serves as our office because one corner of the bedroom is my husband's study (which we aren't able to show since we're limited to 3 pics!). Our friends have commented that our room feels sexy... mainly due to the orange color and the candle fixture on the wall. We also love the small details that we have added to our room as accents and decoration. They are personal and reminds us of good memories.

Love the accent walls! Your colored acccent walls, color and accessory choices are what I've been aiming for in me and the BFs new apartment as well (which might perhaps make me biased in the voting) but great layout and space nonetheless!!

Love the colors! Where did you get that spotlight in the corner of the first pic? I've been trying to find something like that forever.

The living room is the exact color scheme I've been going for in mine - so good to see it in action! Tons of inspiration here. Love it!

Your green wall is yummy. Love the zebra on the floor. Real? The floorplan shows you have an odd configuration of space to work with. Good job.

Thanks for all your comments guys!

The TV stand is the Ikea Lack shelving unit. Instead of positioning 2 of the dividers vertically we placed it horizontally (adjoining the center divider) to look different and to hide some of our media items at the back.

The spotlight is from Potter Barn's Photographer's Tripod Floor Lamp. But bought on eBay for a steal!

And the zebra rug is not a real zebra hide. It's just cow hide =).

I think it's just great - except the white wall behind the tv/kitchen. I feel like it would better unify the space to keep the green going to not make the kitchen cabinets not look so boxy -- I think another green wall there would pull it all together.

But I love it.

i should also so stark white is just never my thing, so maybe it's just me.....

Is that ampersand a decal?

Although I really respect the adventurousness with colour (er, is that even a word), for me they clash a bit with the floor. Could just be the photos though?

Love it!! Is your couch from Ikea? I think it is possibly the one I'm considering buying.

I'm so tired of orange and green... If it's truly "your" look, then why pick the colors every single other hipster is using?

But, Josie what if they chose the colors because they liked it, not so to jump on a bandwagon? I don't see why it's bad to choose colors that everyone has used already. I wouldn't go out of my way JUST to have colors that no one has really chosen yet.

My apartment uses a brown, beige, blue color scheme - overdone and cliched but I love it and personalize it with my own choice if accessories.

Congratulations on having a colorful (as long as you like them), neat and coordinated (to a point of being too matchy) home, but this apartment really doesn't do it for me, to put it politely.

the ampersand is not a decal. it's made out of metal/bronze.

the couch (kramfors) and the bar are from ikea :)

thanks Lizz. it was precisely why we chose the colors -- we really like it and want to see it in our surroundings (esp. on a dreary NY winter day). it was even our wedding color scheme.

i think the colors are lovely and the design clean and well-defined. but i just don't see much personality in the place -- it feels like a very well-designed showroom. it does have cohesion, nice pieces, and an overall sleek look, but i personally would not want to live in it.

Really nice apt! However, I can't shake the feeling that this is an add for west elm; It looks like you went to one store and bought everything. However, that could be a compliment in that everything meshes really well!

This entry, I think, is somewhat blah for a 610 sq. ft. apartment. For one, I just don't think that the green goes all so well with the beautiful flooring. The place is a bit cold and monotonic. I like the airiness of the place, but it is, you know, 610 sq. ft. so it should be airy. It is certainly bright in the bedroom, but I think, perhaps too bright. Just way too much red. Perhaps with that red wall, a slightly softer color on the bed would have been nicer. Otherwise, evne looking at the picture, I need to turn away and squint a bit. When adding color, isn't the point to create some conrast? Color in and of itself isn't a panacea. I think the use of red in the bedroom is a tad overboard.

I do really like the spotlight tripod in the living room, though. I think it gives the place some drama.

Hi fellow W@Wie Lynn! I'm amazed at how you got to maximize the space you had but were still able to make your flat look chic. The colors are fab. So are the furnishings. Overall, your apartment looks like Oprah's design expert, Nate Berkus, had a hand in it. Glad to be #67 to choose the Stellar! Insta-Finalist! button. :D

To me, this looks a lot like a CB2 or west elm catalog. in a not-so good way. I dunno... too much catalog, not enough personality, i think.

Yet another entry rocking the red-green theme. I still like it, despite the fact that everything looks like it came from Bo Elm or Room & Barrell.

I love it.

I just really wish there was a budget portion of the contest so the poor folks like me had a chance. haha

That being said, although the budget is obviously somewhat high, it is appointed to look like it was designed over time and not just a bunch of purchases from DWR. Nicely done.

The only reason that the bedroom is called an office is because it is illegal in New York to have a bedroom with no windows - but no one but once the building gets its C of O, no one takes that seriously.

If you love to travel, start buying unique objects and adding them to the decor. This will not only individualize the apartment but it will surround you with wonderful memories.

There are only 4 things from Ikea that I can see - TV stand, shelves, bar and couch. And even if they enjoy Ikea - so what? It seems like there is a strange trend - either everything is too expensive (then DWR) or too cheap (then Ikea).

I think the place looks unique, and modern. They chose to use a number of "classical" things (the chair, the uber popular Lack TV stand, the shelves), but I think a lot of this is unique.

That is to say, this looks expensive. Which is not a bad thing!

IMHO, the shelves over the TV are way too empty. some books would look grand there.

and I love the Photographer's light!

i actually like the color- but i think the black is too much and there is too much of it. with all that color i would like some white accessories to create light- the dark furnishings and fittings are just too heavy.
