apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#32 - Nick's Lucid Lucite & Clinical Creativity

Name: Nick
Location: West Chelsea, NY
Size & Type: 450 sf Junior 1 (studio that was converted so that there's an interior bedroom now)

Favorite resource: Craigslist (people in my neighborhood have really good taste and are incredibly susceptible to bargaining).

Pitch: Like many people, my design ambitions greatly exceeded my budget, so I turned to Craigslist and the AT classifieds to furnish my home. (At $250, the set [only one pictured] of Lucite and chrome chairs was one of my biggest splurges...but I have a clinically diagnosed weakness for Lucite, so I couldn't help myself)...

4.30nick1.jpg

Pitch Cont'd: The process of pulling it all together has taken a little over a year (and, of course, it's still a work in progress), but I think my apartment shows that it's patience and creativity - not necessarily a big budget - that matters most.

4.30nick3.jpg

Your favorite element: My grey walls. Friends were really
against the idea ("it'll make your place look smaller!"), but I love them.

4.30nick4.jpg

An interesting tidbit: My apartment is the exact same size as This one on your site. So it's interesting to see how different an apartment in the same building can feel even thought it's the exact same space.

i too have a weakness for lucite and just splurged to order two sets of nesting tables...waiting for them is making me giddy. the space looks really nice and clean and i am also amazed that you have a piano in such a small space!

we got basically three photos of the same space though, i'd be curious to see the rest of the place. i'm voting finalist cause i wanna see more and i like whats going on so far...

Alexis - Complete lack of things in the living room? You mean other than the sofa, end table, two ottomans, computer desk, chair, area rug, cabinet, floor lamp, and piano?

Granted, the desk and ottomans are invisible, but still. :)

Oh I'm just about to paint the main room of my studio a grey pretty much like this! I was a little worried but this has made me far more relaxed.
I also dig your lucite tables and couch! Where did it (the couch) come from ?

And that you have a piano instead of a TV.

Lovely place.

Goodness, strange to see MY apartment up here! In answer to some of the questions:

Clutter: On the floor plan, that long white thing in the hallway is a big bookcase that holds lots of books and objects. But my main storage area is under my bed (barely pictured) and the closet next to the bathroom. But it's true I don't have a lot of "stuff."

TV: There's a 20" TV in the credenza (that the candy dishes are on). TiVO, DVD player, and cable box is in there, too.

Couch: The couch is from C.I.T.E. It's a Florence Knoll inspired design (I'm saving up for the real thing now).

Walls: The grey is Benjamin Moore Pebble Beach (1597).

Except for the piano, nothing in the place seems to have any life or warmth or surprise. But then, I'm a fan of cat-hair Liz.

quick question (for anyone, actually)... what software did you use to make the floorplan. i'm trying to layout my apartment and don't really know of any good software to make a good, clean-looking floorplan.

Thanks!

450 sq ft AND a grand piano! What a feat! Your place is lovely - very sofisticated and tranquil. Way to stick to your guns with the grey walls - they really work. Nice cohesive feel throughout. Where do you put everything??? Please tell me you have a great big closet where, when you open the door, everything comes tumbling out, otherwise I'm going to feel very inferior. I could never be that tidy, despite my desire to be. Thanks for sharing!

The apt. feels/looks a bit bare (would love to see more texture and warmth) but I do understand that Nick is very happy with his bare-bones clinical creativity, and I'm happy for him.

I'd like to nominate Nick for a special award for managing to house a baby grand in 450 sf. To me, that says it all about how he successfully prioritized in order to make room for what is most important to him.

Great place - further proof that you can have a very livable space (i.e. not a 'show-room) without a lot of clutter.

As an aside, I would suggest people read the earlier comments, before posting items that have already be addressed...

Clearly you missed his comment that the couch you see there is a "knoll inspired" couch.

Love the piano, and the fact that Nick has a tv and all those other normal things. Excellent use of space.

I love the placement of the cabinet in the corner of the livingroom. I think the use of corner adds something "something" to a room. I don't know what you call it, but all too often corners are left empty or they are used for hiding places for the undesirable stuff. Using a corner the way you did and in particular, sitting opposite the lovely position of the piano, highlights those pieces and gives an elegance to the room.
It's almost as though, you are not concerned with space, but rather with showing off what you have in the most interesting way that suits the room.

Once again I've voted finalist for someone who doesn't need anything. Your place is perfect! Like many of the commentators, I am amazed you have a piano in there. I also have a thing for lucite. I want some ghost chairs, but am waiting for Target to produce a ripoff.

I love the grey walls and the art above the sofa. The clock and the space ship looking candy dishes add just the right amount of sculptural interest.

Great work. Can I have that sofa if you buy another one. I hope we get to see more of your place.

Hello, again! In answer to some of the questions/comments:

Candy Dishes: Those are Oswald Haerdtl for Lobmeyer (c. 1925)

Clock: From the back of my great grandmother's closet (French from the 1940s).

Art Above Couch: That's just a photograph I took of the Reykjavik airport and printed out on a color laser printer (and taped it all together). I'm debating whether to have the photo printed on photo paper or canvas and framed (suggestions welcomed).

Art Above Bed: That's a 1970s silkscreen by Hiroshi Awatsuji, who was a Japanese textile designer.

Lucite Console (for computer): That came from CB2.com (which turned out to be cheaper than Plexi-Craft for the same thing).

Coffee Tables: Those were from the AT classifieds! Best $20 I ever spent...

cyn in sf -

Take that piano out of storage right this minute, young lady. MARCH! And make sure you have it tuned when you move it back where it belongs, because being in storage might not have been good for it; moving surely will put it slightly out of tune.

Anyway... yes, I think it's wonderful that there's an entry with a piano. But with small spaces, it's really not that surprising there aren't more. It's more like just a triumph of the human will that there are any at all.

Nice piano and kitchen implements, otherwise a little bland.

BTW, this isn't the only entry with a piano, but it's the only entry with a grand.

We had to have a crane, and take the front windows off the porch, and the front windows off the living room to get the piano in. And that house was WAY bigger than 600sf.

Love the grey - I'm a sucker for that smooth cool dove grey. For those people thinking that the grey is too cool, you could warm it up to a nice taupe and keep the same effect.

I must say tho, I'm not really understanding the love of lucite. To me its always been representative of cheap display units... but then I've spent a lot of time in retail. Still, the desk aside I do really like this entry!
