Name: Seth R. & Ariel S.
Location: Boston, MA
Size & Type: 650 sf 1 Bedroom
Favorite resource: Art Supply & Hardware Stores
Pitch: This small one-bedroom, used extensively for entertaining, is made to feel expansive through low, open and flexible furniture, letting the floor read under, and framing views out the window wall. Efficient use of storage spaces, particularly the work area and under the bed expand livability for two...
Pitch Cont'd: Multiple tones of rich, dark colors define the living room , giving this small space a multi-layered effect. The living room contrasts the cool and comfortable tones of the 'zen' bedroom - two distinct zones in one living space. A place for everything, and everything in its place.
Your favorite element: Using inexpensive pieces designed for other uses, i.e. shelves turned vertically = headboard, architecture school project = wall art
Very nice! Where'd you get the light fixture in the dining room? I love it!
Love your windows!! I'm so jealous!

Light fixture is from West Elm. Good source - but be selective - some quality is great, some no so much.

Is this Charles River Park? The layout and parquet floor reminds me of a friend's old apartment, but much more nicely done than his.

What clothing storage unit is on the right side of your bed (left side of photo)? Where did you buy it? Right now I use an open shelved bookcase for clothes which is not very attractive.
Great place. I, too am jealous of your windows with SO much light! However I feel like the details or your livingroom get lost amongst that see of black. Perhaps another color is needed in there to highlight the great pieces you have.

Ahh so many typos. I meant to say the details of your livingroom gets lost amongst that sea of black (color).

Great dining table.

I really adore your headboard.

that dining table is stellar! as is the clothing storage...which i'd also like a source on..

Clothes storage next to bed is six or seven year old piece from IKEA (yeah, who knew it would last that long?). Originally for dining room set. Don't know if they sell it anymore.
Indeed, a similar vintage to Charles River Park, but it's in the Pru.

since no one's said it yet, i will! this would really pull together with a great rug. it's a nice space, but i think that it would feel softer and more cohesive with a rug in the living room area (it would soften the slight chair-excess)....

looooove the Wassily Chairs, but everything else smells too Ikea to me. kinda boring.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who can't let go of their architecture school projects....

This entry is brought to you by the color black, and the wood birch.

Christopher - you picked up on the theme, eh?

Ugghh.. why does this happen all the time? Ikea is a good way to get some decent looking furniture without paying out the a**. And clearly based on the comment about West Elm they are looking for pieces that are affordable, yet decent quality.
That being said, I like the look of the living room, but I dont feel the same kind of cohesion in the bedroom. I also wish you'd included furniture in your layout. Its hard to tell where the office picture is. I voted it cool.

I really love the open and breeziness of your layout colors. The bedroom is really cozy and I liked how you emphasized the height of the room. Well done!

i love this apartment...i can see myself slipping away with a drink or two or three or four....in the company of great friends. there would be plenty of room for everyone to gather in the living room with places for all to sit. nice work!

a rug would be good to pull it together and bring in more of the colors on the couch throw pillows.
grouping and covering all the wires on the desk would create a cleaner look.
perhaps it's me, but seeing messy things through frosted glass (as in next to the bed) still looks messy and doesn't hide them enough.
The window treatments look wimpy.
HOWEVER - I still love it and think my above observations are simple enough to fix. I love how you were creative on your own and didn't depend on mega$$ to get designer-made everything. That gives you huge points. I have no problem with blue, black, and birch. I think it looks clean and airy. I do think a punch or two more of warmer colors would help a bit, but it's still great.
I also love the texture you created with the tall arrangement in the vase by the bed (i like it much better than the one in the living room -- you should do the same one there to create unity...?)
nice job!

Love your desk space! I find myself inspired by your organization arrangement... (:

Somebody is familiar with 5S! Your office area is so well organized and labelled. We apply 'a place for everything and everything in its place' at work, but it also makes sense at home. Can't wait to see how you've organized the kitchen.

I love the workstation. There's just a little too much black in the living room for my taste, would have put more of the birch in there. Perhaps, the rug that Valerie suggested would tone the rigidity of the black down a bit. Over all, though, a stellar entry.

Oooh gosh I love it! Makes me nostalgic for Boston. I love the headboard!!!

i like it- i just wish you would have played up those great windows a little bit!... some rich color on the wall would make them stand out... very nice overall though :)

Nice space. There are some nice pieces and I agree that light/open furnishing are making the space feel larger however it is also making it feel cluttered with no place for your eye to rest (inside the apartment anyways). Some pieces mixed in with a bit more mass but still lifted from the floor might even act as sort of an intermediary between in and out (framed window views). Remember, your minds eye will still percieve the floor as continuous if you trick it or give it some clues.
How is anything there "framing views out the window wall"?

I like your little office nook, but I am partial to birch =] What sort of chair is that, does anyone recognize it?

LOVE the headboard idea, and the dining room table.

I agree with Dean, take the Breuer chairs out and you have an Ikea/West Elm catalog, with a lot more clutter (and no floorcoverings!). If you really do entertain a lot and have neighbours below, I feel sorry for them.
It'd be nice to see a bit more imagination, creativity and finesse -- the furniture and objects look to be spread out evenly rather than considered. But I guess this is a decorator's blog and more about objects than actual spatial design. The models look pretty good, can't wait til you get to design a real space, eh?

I like the layout of the furniture (yay! no tv shrine) and think the place looks relaxing, comfortable and airy. Yes, there's a lot of Ikea furniture, but all that tells me is that they're on a budget and aren't into flea-markets/vintage.

Beautiful!! The best you could do with such a little place!!! also, the advantage of using wassily chairs in the living space is that the frame allows you to look thru them, which makes the space feel bigger!!! Congrats!!

I'm about to paint in a similar color to your living room, would you share your paint color? Thanks

The windows are great. I wish there was less black in the living area--the grey sofa bed looks nice but it gets lost in the black.
I would at least add some bright cushions on the s/b and a rug. And I'd remove the black coffee table and the table between the Wassily chairs.
I'd also get rid of that constellation of the other black chair, torchiere, and vase with red and green things sticking out of it.
That would lighten the room.

So fresh and so clean! The living space is welcoming, the walls are cool, soothing colors and that headboard - stellar! Just watch out for that plant atop your clothing unit... Good job boys. You get my vote!

So stylish and hip. Makes me wish I could hang out and casually sip a lovely pomegranate martini with, perhaps, some tasty turkey burgers and cranberry mayo. Maybe one day my dream will come true...

What couch is that? I really like what we can see of it. The headboard is great too!

You've done a great job. Seems to me the right mix of clean & contemporary with enough personal 'stuff' to make it your home. I was admiring the bones of the space...windows, floor. Then I saw thefloor plan with balcony . I am suffering some serious lust for a small space with a balcony. I want to drink my evening wine watching the sun set and watering my garden in pots. Lust lust lust. Dream dream dream.
Augh! I just looked again....yours is a good sized balcony. Lust lust lust.

Stunning, cleancut, sophisticated, contemporary lines. Livingroom welcomes people to sit down and chat intimately yet the space presents well for a larger more casual party. Would love to be invited.Great idea to hang an architecture project. Curious to see what you did on the other walls for treatment.
Work space is terrific - calming and organized allowing one to think clearly in a crowded small apartment. It must feel good to be at home there. Super fantastic idea for the head board. Superior job all the way around on a tight budget and space.
Loved it! GGNore
