apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

East Semi-Finalist #2: 42anderson's Love, Eat, Party

Name: 42anderson
Location: Boston, MA
Type: 520 square feet One Bedroom
Go to: Original Entry

42anderson's favorite OTHER entry:

London Urchin - had a similar spirit to our entry, mixing of contemporary space and color in an older shell.

What is your next improvement (if you could do anything)?:

We start Round Two of this contest with heavy hearts. We are in the process of moving to California... San Francisco. The apartment is almost completely packed up, so some of the photos are old.

For us creating a small space that feels like much more requires thinking inside the box.

You have to reject the living spaces that infect the catalogs that clog your (probably small) mailbox. The use of color is critical as a tool to either link a series of spaces together or create separation in one large space.

We used color in this apartment in an attempt to do both at once, depending in which part of the space you are in. Large blocks of color create individual volumes of space. Then objects, like furniture, carpets and paintings have complementary colors that pull the living space together as a whole.

The video doesn't show the entire apartment, but the end of one of the last meals in our wonderful kitchen.

I was so glad to see this as a semifinalist! It is such a homey and sociable space, I'm sad they're leaving it!

Anne (in Reno) took the words right off of my keyboard; I'm sad they're having to leave this. I just hope their Buyer will buy all their stuff -- lock, stock and barrel -- and keep it just like it is.

Oh, good, I'm not the only sad one. This one jumped out at me from the start — how I love it. The kitchen will never be loved like that again...

This is my absolute favorite: Calm, yet funky & colorful. It has a great personality.

Love it, love it, love it!!

Congrats on an awesome place and a cool video.

This may be inappropriate, but I want to become close friends! (Especially if I can come to dinner sometime.)

Is that weird?

Anyway, good luck on the move...and as for leaving this place, look at at this way -- there's a new apartment to conquer! Don't rest on your laurels...

Incredible use of space. That brick wall is such a great asset.

Congrats and good luck!

I have the exact same amount of square footage, so how come your apartment seemed so spacious? I'm forever skirting and dodging things in mine. I am going to study your pics for the secret, or could it just be my layout? Hmmm...

my favorite of the "uncluttered" looks. And good luck with your move. If you liked Boston, you'll like San Francisco. The two cities have a lot in common (though neither city is likely to appreciate that comment).

I love, love, love this apartment. It looks warm and cosy, yet is modern and stylish. It has personality, but is uncluttered. This apartment is definitely inspirational, but it's real too.

I so hope you win.

Sweet, charming, cozy, colorful... but this doesn't scream "coolest" to me.

From the description, it sounds like my husband and I eat that same mussel recipe!
Very cute apartment.

Really cool, I love it. The use of colour splashes, the furniture position. It screams stylish yet functional.

I think this apartment should win. Its a brilliant use of color and space. Its my favorite and the only one I would want to move into. I think all the pieces are well thought out. Each piece looks like someone loves it and uses it- not like its been places there to "stage" the place for this contest.

Very warm and inviting...
I love exposed brick walls -- they exude so much architectural charm and character.
I adore the "cookin in the kitchen" pic... adds heaps of yummy appeal to the space, not to mention a sense of "real" livability. Terrific home you have!
