apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

East Semi-Finalist #4: London Urchin's Jewelry Box

Name: London Urchin
Location: London, England
Type: 300 square feet Loft Studio
Go to: Original Entry

LU's favorite OTHER entry:

#9 Kelly & Gregory’s - Lil’ Italy Conversion: Making the most of it, beautifully. Extremely smart…subtle, not overdone…and I love the cabinetry. It’s all about containing the clutter and knowing how to air out the space…this place deserves a ton more credit than it got, especially since the ceilings are kinda low, etc.

What is your next improvement (if you could do anything)?:

Next improvement to my place?? No way!! The flat is done -- I am quitting while I’m ahead and still have a shred of sanity. Non, je ne regrette rien!

I love this one to bits. Even the radiators installation is lovely. So inspiring.

I have never been so desperately seethingly hopelessly jealous in my life.

I need a drink.

And, if this doesn't win, I need a new design site/community.

words cannot express... this is my hands-down favorite!

i love the quirky pieces of art that punctuate the white. i love all the hidden necessities: d/w, fridge, office, laundry chute. i love the furniture choices. i even love the cat, and i am *not* a cat person :)

i think this incredibly lovely space capures the true spirit of the smallest coolest contest: lovely use of space, great aesthetic choices, and innovative/creative space interventions.

too bad you probably can't join us at the party tonite cos your name *will* be read!

If I didn't have 2 kids, I'd move in! I love this place! The Cuzco school painting is gorgeous -- I wish you would take me shopping!

I tried to get the same rubber flooring for our bathroom reno (have a different brand of rubber flooring in the kitchen), but the US distributor wouldn't deal with me as I was just a "courtesy client" -- too small for him to bother about! It is a wonderful product that I wish would be more available in North America.

I am also jealous of the Hastens mattress you say you have; I can only dream of one, and am sure it makes this is perfect nest (my favourite bed was a bed in a loft such as yours designed by Kevin Waltz in the early '80s -- it would suit your place perfectly!).

Bonne Chance!

Decent pictures, although I wish we could have seen more of the living/desk/entertainment area and outdoor space. As cool as the laundry chute and car door are, I think they were kind of wasted pictures.

I will view the video later when I get home to see if those elements are in there.

I was getting a little nervous waiting for this entry to appear as a finalist. It's my fav..however, I'm a bit apprehensive over the fact London Urchin never stated he/she designed this apartment.

In most small places, we treat The Hiding of the Bed as the biggest challenge. I think hiding the kitchen makes more of a difference because even basic kitchens have a few machines and boxes to busy-up the visual space. (Although London Urchin has been able to hide the bed as well, lucky duck!) And all that greenery... It's so livable. I love this place.

I liked this entry better before I saw the additional pictures. I don't think it looks as nearly as pulled together in the additional photos. I guess seeing just three photos left a lot to my imagination, and I had imagined the rest of the space to be a lot more interesting.

I agree with Josh. The new photos are disappointing. I'm still not seeing the whole space and what I do see isn't all that exciting. BUT the idea for the kitchen is wonderful. Nice job on that. It should be a smallest coolest kitchen winner.

I have an unreasonable crush on this apartment. It's about as unreasonable as the crush I had on Michael Stipe when I was 13. And that was serious business.

London Urchin,

Congrats!!! We have are finguers crossed for your flat and hope that you win. When we first saw your entry all our hopes of winning went out the door. We're almost glad that we didn't make it to the finals so we wouldn't have to compete with your beautiful apartment.

For those of you complaining about the pictures, remember that this is not a photography contest, this is the smallest coolest apartment contest!!!! The only question is:

IS THIS THE COOLEST APARTMENT???

if you put everything aside, like your own entry in the constest, you'll realize that this is the best and stop with your winning.

The apartment looks great but I just got the biggest headache trying to watch the out of focus, no light, video. What is that black blob you showed us on the wall?

Liked it the first time. Not so much this time. This would be a popular winner though I think an "honorable mention" would have been more appropriate.

OPERA, I don't think we're complaining about the photos, (though I do agree with Weasel's comment re. the video). It's what the photos show/do not show. The photo's are the only window we have into the space, so if what they show is not cohesive or wowing, then I have to assume that the actual space would feel the same way. I wasn't whining, just expressing my opinion which is what the comments are for.

True this is not a photography contest, but these pictures left me wanting. The original photos must have been professional?? Even the blue kitchen colour was not as I remembered.

I don't mean to be a curmudgeon, but that video was awful. Very innovative use of space and a great job, but I don't think it's the coolest apartment (to answer OperaApartment's very enthusiastic question). Way cooler than mine, though!

My choice for winner hands down.......this IS the COOLEST APARTMENT!!!!! (not the coolest pictures or video)

Too bad the slideshow is hanging on the third picture!

Excellent Freudian slip!

I agree; this one is one of my favorites, but the new photos and video don't do it any favors. (Although I am glad to see several pieces of art, and possibly very nice ones at that!)

East must win! East! East! East! This apartment is beautiful and clean. There are splashes of color and texture that make this apartment warm. As far as my favorites I think that London Urchin or 42andersons love, eat party so clearly surpass all the other entrants. These apartment have timeless style not some of period-bogged staging and stylings.

Congrats for winning--where in London are you? I've got an Earls Court studio flat that really reminds me of yours (and a private square to match), so it was inspiring to see what you did with that space!

this is really interesting. did u build all those built-in nooks and crannies? i could never fathom some of the things u did.

(to the person who said the slide show is hung up on the 3rd picture, just press the arrow key to the left and keep going on to see the rest.)

I don't care about close ups of white walls.
I don't care about what's inside your fridge.
I don't care about close ups of vignettes.
I don't care about close ups of your cat.

I gave up half way thru the video because what I REALLY wanted to see was the actual apartment.

Thanks.
