Small Cool Extra: Laure's East Village Home

Name: Laure
Location: East Village, NYC
Size & Type: 385 sf Studio

Favorite resource: Room and Board, Target, and Home Goods

Pitch: My apartment is cool because I can throw a party for 50 people, cook a cozy dinner for 3 of my closest friends, retreat to my bedroom at a moments notice, and hide all my belongings to create my own personal zen atmosphere.

Pitch Cont'd: My turquoise and brown theme keep the look neutral and relaxing, and the turquoise shades add a Laure touch of color. My bare feet love the comfort of my Target shag rug. The main reason my apartment is cool, is because its all mine and its just the way I like it.

What a lovely, calm and cohesive apartment. There is a serenity in the living/bedroom area that is sometimes difficult to achieve in a small studio apartment. You've done a terrific job of keeping clutter at bay. I'm not sure where you hide away the essentials, but I'm assuming there must be some great closets somewhere. The only distraction that caught my eye was the electrical cord draped under the kitchen window. Perhaps adding an extra extension cord so that you could lay it along the baseboard, behind the small cabinet, and straight up to the outlet, would make it a little less noticeable. This apartment is one that appeals most to me. Well done.

I agree with judy in TO...the first thing that caught my eye was the cord from the stove to the wall! That's really an eye sore! Overall, you're place is cute! Luv the bedroom area!

cute pad! i really love the fabric panel and i agree that you've managed to keep the space very uncluttered. i also agree about that cord...it mars the polish of your place, imo. i'd ditto the suggestion of an extension cord and atleast running it along the baseboard and cleanly upwards to the outlet. also, maybe consider putting another shelf a few inches below the outlet - it will "hide" the outlet a bit, and also balance out the height of the wine-glass-rack-shelf, which to me feels a bit high. i feel something is needed between the cart and the shelf. anyways, this is very nicely done and you should be proud! - katy

Cute place! I love the screens you have next to your bed . . . what a fabulous touch.

The only thing I don't like is the torchiere lamp next to the sofa (but then I hate those lamps with a passion). I think if you replaced it with something more chic (maybe the capiz floor lamp from West Elm?), it would be perfection.

And maybe some art work as a statement? Matted and framed photographs would work beautifully.

BTW, have you seriously fit 50 people in your apartment???

I live in a 2000 sf house, and I'd find 50 guests to be a squeeze!

Your place is AMAZING! I live in a place about this size (with my s.o.) and I'd love it if it could look this serene. You've given me inspiration!

And yeah, I'd also like to know, where do you keep your clothes??? I don't see (or at least can't identify) a closet on your floorplan.

Where did you get the panels? They are very nice way to make your bedroom private.

I think the closet is by the entrance, across from the bathroom. I have the same layout, only bigger closet, smaller kitchen.

I spy a weird box under the bed. It is screaming at me to suggest an alternate storage system... ANY alternate storage system.

The table is wonderful! Where? Where? Where?

It appears to be a small scale version of this table from Roomand Board (which I love, but can't talk myself into affording):

I really love your place. Very elegant and serene. I love the turquoise and the brown, and of course, those panels. I want to do that in my place. I love the pops your glass vases provide, but I think they need to be hung just a little bit lower.

I agree with Birdie - you definitely need a new lamp. I have a think about those torchiers too. Looks like a dorm lamp and not nearly chic enough for this place. Her suggestion about the capis lamp from West Elm is a great one. They even have a pale brown capis that would like like heaven in your beautiful place and add to its romance. They might be a bit pricey, though. I've been wanting myself.

The other thing I would like to see changed is I would like to see something a bit more organic on your coffee table, like a vietnamese bamboo bowl.

Your place is so lovely and inspirational! Thanks for posting. I hope you will post any changes you might make. I only wish you would have been the contest. I would have voted finalist!

This place is more an example of an extremely tidy and well edited small space than anything exceptionally creative or inspiring. It looks a lot like a model apartment in a 1967 building I looked at today.

Is it me or do too many of these comments seem kinda anal? Or is the word pretentious? This is a nice, clean, serene space and isn't that what we are going for? So what if there's a torchiere you don't like! And hasn't anyone ever been to a big manhattan party in a little manhattan apt, like Holly Golightly? Hers wan't any bigger but she had lots of people over!

I have the same curtain panels from Ikea! I have two of them on my dining room wall as apartment "wallpaper." People are always amazed when they see it, I love their design.

I do think it's decluttered and simple but it feels too monochromatic and for me a bit boring.

My apartment is a tad bigger with a separate bedroom and I still couldn't imagine hosting for 2 not to mention 3 of my friends. What am I doing wrong? I love this apartment. I like how it's open and in order.
