apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

April is the Smallest Coolest Month!

We begin today, but because we don't want any screw-ups, we begin with a test of our new survey system. A bit later today, we'll be posting a test post with the new survey that doesn't require any security capture (but does require you to be registered), and we'll be testing it overnight...

We'll be doing this across all the sites, so please go test vote and tell us if you have any problems: support @ apartmenttherapy.com.

Remember: The Deadline for the Contest has been set back to Monday, April 16 (if you rushed to enter and would like to resubmit photos, go ahead!).

That's awesome that you'll let people resubmit. It's only fair.
I was going to submit by Friday, but was going to do so by long distance from home and have my husband in control of the photos- eek! Thanks for the extension!

People are going to have to register to vote? That seems like it will cut down the voting a ton. I prefer a CAPTCHA system so the general public can vote without having to register for AT.

Also, with a three day voting system, if your entry gets posted on a Friday, does that mean you get Friday, Saturday Sunday, as the days people are allowed to vote? If so, then Friday people will be screwed compared to Monday people considering that the blogosphere pretty much shuts down on the weekends. Maybe Friday posted entries should get Monday for voting too.

Also, if people have to register in order to vote, instead of using a CAPTCHA system, by the end of the contest the pool of voters will be significantly larger than the pool of voters at the beginning. Thus making the people who turned their entries in on time at a disadvantage.

Lastly, the contest page still shows a deadline of April 6th. Maybe if you changed that to the new deadline, people would realize that they can still enter the contest.

Sorry, this really isn't bitching, and I know you guys are doing everything in your power to be fair, but these are just some of the things that are going to come up once this thing starts taking off.

I don't know.. I think voting should be open for all entries throughout the contest. That seems a little unfair. I think entries at the end will get alot more votes.

Well jeez.

To get all nerdy on you...maybe contests need a pairwise comparison system. Then, as you post entries, a voter can say that I like entry A better than entry B but not more than entry C. And can continue to rank entries as they are posted.

And at the end of the contest the results are compiled by assigning points. An entry at the top of someone's list gets 5 points. The second entry gets 4 points...etc. The point totals are summed across all entries and voters. And you've got your finalists and no one can stuff the ballot box.

But then again, this is supposed to be fun...

Okay, my brainpower should probably be used elsewhere now.

I think a three-day voting limitation is ... well, too limited. I don't come to the site every single day, but really enjoy and look forward to the small cool contest. It's what brought me to AT in the first place. I don't mind registering, but think too many rules and too much structure will reduce the overall enjoyment of the contest.

I'm ok with the 3 day voting, but agree with eric about allowing the general public to vote. :\

You need to divide the contest into two categories: renters and owners!

megm, you do know that a renter won the first smallest coolest contest don't you?

Secone place was also a renter and both could stand up to any owner's place today

Hey jamie pup, haven't seen you posting in awhile. Welcome back!

I think the argument about the "general public" voting is bogus. The "general public" doesn't know what this site is and if they do they can vote by registering (hey if registering is good enough for voting for President) and becoming part of the AT community. I think there has also been concern in the past about possible voting irregularities (or at least the suggestion of it) with multiple votes from the same people using different names. I believe registering would help to limit that kind of problem.

Jimkk, I agree about the "general public" issue.

I do have a concern, what system is in place that stops registered viewers from re-registering with different names and email addresses? Does registering really eliminate that problem, which was the biggest problem last year, in my opinion? That apparently was how the "snarkers" got away with it. It sounded like some were legitimate members of the community and put on those aliases when they wanted to be rude. That's why even non-rude comments were removed when the AT crew purged the system.

Will this registration system fix that?
