Small Cool 2007: Introducing the Contest Master

4-3-jill.jpg8 Entries! This is getting tight, but the odds have never been better. That said, today we introduce our Contest Master, Jill Slater (left), who will be making all decisions regarding rules and submissions in this year's contest. A good idea that Wende (and perhaps a few others)passed on to us, the Contest Master is the sole arbiter and the final word in all disputes. She stands as a neutral (and tough) island in the midst of the swirling madness and all editors, judges and readers are bound to listen to her ruling. Sit tight and hear her roar.

Do we get some sort of confirmation that our entry has been submitted? I sent mine in on Saturday and haven't heard anything. I just want to make sure it was received and has met the guidelines. Thanks!

A question. I emailed this to the contest email address but didn't receive a reply. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate it. Thanks a bunch:

I plan on submitting my apartment for the contest. A couple of
questions, though. First, what time on Friday is the latest by which
we can submit our entry? 9 am? 5 pm? midnight? Second, the limit is
three photos. Now, I have a sleeper sofa that I use as my primary
sleeping space and wanted to include a picture showing it used as a
sofa and showing it used as a bed. But I don't want to have to have
two of my three photos just be that part of my apartment. Would it be
ok if I submitted one file with two photos joined together, one with
the couch folded up and one with it folded out, and having it count
as just one photo? Any guidance would be helpful.

Not sure if you have photoshop, but if so, you could overlay the pictures. So the primary pic is the sofa but then have light transparent image of the bed pulled out over the top. You will of course need to take the 2 pics from exactly the same place (i.e. using a tripod). Just an idea...

Only 8 entries? Have you considered moving this contest till after the cure? It seems like a really, really low number.
Just my two cents. :)

and I missed my chance to take any pictures with natural daylight this past weekend!

I think seeing entries go up before the deadline in past years got people excited to enter? It's really tough when you don't know what the playing field is like this year...

My understanding was that the new deadline exists because of the uproar of complaints about how entries received before the old-style deadline (early in the month) got an advantage in likelihood of being posted, while stronger entries received near the end might not even get posted.

If y'all want to start a movement to go back to the old way, I suspect Maxwell would listen but you don't get to complain that he changes the rules. ;-)

My guess is there will be more that enough contestants by the deadline date. Who submits this early? I've been involved in a lot of deadline-driven application processes, and almost everyone submits their entry on the due date itself. (There will, of course, be a few stragglers entered after the deadline; some of those will be great; AT will have to decide what to do with them, and exactly how firm the deadline is.) On another thread, someone asked by exactly what time do the submissions have to be sent. (That already tells you how close some are planning to cut it.) The fact that AT has not answered that question explicitly is not a good sign that they plan on being very firm with the deadline. (If midnight is the cut-off time, they should say so explicitly.)

Sea just became the person I'd want around as a soothing influence if I were running anything deadline-related. (Those of us who do hand in assignments in advance never quite comprehend the people who wait for the last minute, and probably vice-versa.)

This is a good question: are the photographs due by 12am Friday, or 12am Saturday?

And; yes, we are cutting it really close... I got sick, plus me and boyfriend are busy with school AND work... so no strength or time to clean up slightly to take the photographs.

Wende: absolutely :-)
