Small Cool 2007: We're You're Getting Analyzed!

5-15-shag.jpgWho knew what Wende would try next? After taking on a major renovation in the Cure and redoing an entire dollhouse for Marva and Brian, Wende has gone and started a blog, Analyzing AT's Smallest, Coolest 2007 Contest. She's got great stats on the popularity of shag rugs, the dominance of thrift stores and eBay and whether or not professional designers have an edge.... (Thanks, Wende!)

Wende,

Amazing blog. You totally rock.

(But I still wish AT would hire you as a main poster!)

love it, wende!

hey, i thot spaces had to be designed by the resident, no prof help unless one was a professional his/herself. i guess i missed the entrants who admitted hiring help....

Statistics with an arty bent and a good sense of humor? I truly can die now, because I've seen everything. Wende is amazing.

OK, I'm an admitted idiot for weird dioramas, but have you looked at Wende's dollhouses on her site? Very cool.

Professional designers already have contests, right?

This is great Wende. As a self-professed Excel geek, I admire your translation of this contest info into some graphs!

Recently I noticed in a photo of Ray Eames in her living room there was an animal skin rug/throw on the sofa. Maybe this trend is another homage to the Eames duo. I also noticed there were layer upon layer of colorful carpets on the living room floor. HMMMMMM, does that sound like anyone we know?

Wende, I don't know you, but I heart you and want to bake you cookies. This is exactly the cherry that the contest sundae needed on top. And thank you for the color-coded bars.

But it does say right in the contest rules:

"To be eligible, your entry must be your primary residence and you must have designed it."

I remember that some people said that their renovations were done with contractors, but is that the same as hiring a professional designer?

Wende, this is a complete hoot. I know (from experience) how much hard work it took to make this come off so effortlessly.

Cassis--

"Designed it" does not mean "built it."

Wende,

The graphs and the stats presented are fantastic!!!

Few thoughts regarding some of the issues:

1. Counting the votes:

If the formula for adding the votes is truly I P-N, then that means that an apartment which voters pick as an "instant finalist" has the same value as an apartment that voters picked as "cool has potential."

For example, if for one apartment the votes add up like this:

(I=176 P=24 - N=5)= 195 Total votes

And on another apartment:

(I=24 P=176 - N=4) = 196 Total votes

It just doesn't seem right than an apartment that voters picked as an "instant finalist" can be beat by a "cool has potential." Furthermore, the "Not my things" should not be subtracted since other contestants can rally with their friends against another contestant's apartment.

The formula should be something like this:

(1.5I) (1P) (.5N) = Total Votes

otherwise the rating system for voting doesn't mean anything.

2. Profesional Designed Entries:

If you're going to call this contest "Smallest Coolest Apartment," then it should be open to anyone who's thinks they have the smallest coolest. Otherwise AT should come up with a different title for this contest.

*blushes massively*

*gets crackin' on doing some more entries*

On the professional design and voting issue, good points -- I'll revisit that eventually with your comments in mind. I also need to take a look at what actually went to finals, as opposed to my predictions based on old voting methods.

Really like Gregory's suggestion for tallying the votes, above. Seems eminently sensible.

Wende, here's another key - now with the new photos, it appears that the Tortoiseshell and Abyssinian are the "It" cats of the season. How many torties & Abys in the contest overall? How does cat breed factor into the design's popularity?
