What's your favorite resource for your home?

My many travels and adventures cross country to antique and collectible shops of Americana and beyond.

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

This 1840's hotel-converted-and-handcrafted into small and oh-so-cool apartments of detailed molding and original fixtures (claw-footed bath, brass doorknobs and hand-carved column fireplace) with shared wrought iron cage elevator implores me to surround myself in its yesteryear and voyage in my mind’s eye back to a simpler time, as I become a part of its history with the help of mid-century décor.

From a 1947 Westinghouse Roaster Oven keeping my linens to authentic 1969 Kartell Roundups doing double duty as dressers and side tables for aesthetic storage, I have created a wondrous and stylistic journey through time. I marvel at my lovely 440 sq ft retreat and wonder aloud “Who has lived here before me?”

When will people stop placing their televisions over the fireplace...it is just so tacky. Cool place though, but the fireplace is enough of a focal point to go messing it up with that tv.

There are too many little things displayed like a museum or a shop - Nice as they are, they don't make for a unifying design or a comfortable looking place to live.

(and what's with the TV & cable box on the mantle?)

Did you choose the tile for the fireplace? Or, was it already in place when you rented it?

I got this instead of the slide show:
"ERROR: unable to load page". It would have been nice if you center the TV on the mantle if you prefer it to be there. Hide the electronics somewhere else and use a remote extender if needed. What's with the clock on the Fireplace, could have used some show piece logs instead.

I disagree about the tv/fireplace comments for this particular space. If you live in a space that is 440 sq ft, and the flat screen fits over the fireplace, why not! its better than an obtrusive tv stand or hanging it on one of those hideous rotating arms attached to the ceiling. My only tv comment is maybe its a bit large for the space. For a larger space, sure tv over fireplace, tacky and could be put elsewhere.

Small. cool.

What a shame this apt could easily have been a top contender. No question. This is the first I am commenting on due to the shell. However, HOWEVER, that gigantic TV on the fireplace is aweful. An immediate deal breaker. Plus you can see another in the bedroom bolted to the wall. Not good. A little to much nick nacks. All in all this apt is an awesome place but...needs to mature some.

I'm usually put off by the all-white look, but this one is slightly different and I am impressed. Maybe all of those modernist gew-gaws fooled me into thinking I was at a museum of modern art? The red light on that roasting oven reminds me of HAL from 2001; is the roasting oven watching you and calculating your demise, Trilby? I am curious as to what you have done with that devilishly long and contorted entry hallway. All in all, a strong contender.

such a strange & interesting floorplan! so much light, too.

there are some really great moments here- the roaster oven towel cabinet, the pair of white chairs - but i think there are too many things pulling focus. maybe concentrate on a few vignettes and rotate them out?
the giant tv is definitely an eyesore.

Fun place! I like the mod white.

Two criticisms:

1. The "coffee table" doesn't really go with the rest of the room, though I know why you have it instead of something sleek -- it surely holds a lot of stuff.

2. I'd rather see the TV over in the corner where you have the two chairs and circular unit. It looks messy and precarious over the mantle.

But you have a great sense of style.

i like it. i sympathize with Trilby - this living room doesn't have even one solid wall! i've lived in places like that (doors on two walls, giant windows on one, fireplace on the last) and it's hard to make things fit. i think it works.

i haven't commented on this site before but i had to join just to say that i'm shocked by how mean some comments have been...some of you just rip people to shreds! i can't believe it, it's like junior high or something. anyway, cute place.

It's funny - there are so many nice vignettes in this home that I didn't even see the TV until I read the comments! I don't mind it above the fireplace, but it would look better centered.

Perhaps the TV isn't centered on the mantle because it would cause a bowing effect in the wood? There is more support to the side with a column beneath.

Nice apt. I agree with the comments about too many little things in there thou. It looks like an antique shop, where they have tables and tables filled with things.

I think you need a tall cabinent and put all your little things in there. Everything in your apartment is so low, please get taller things.

Oh, and you have to do something about the tv. I can understand having the tv on the mantle but please move the boxes off.

I agree with the TV comments. I think it would be better in the corner where the little bar is, it must be uncomfortable to be sitting on the couch and watching TV.

I like the general theme of this apartment, but there is just way too much. I have a lot of nicknacks in my unit, but I try not to let them encroach on my everyday living space, for instance all the bits on the coffee table in the living room would make me feel like I was ruining the display if I were to put a cup of coffee on it. It must be annoying having to move all the bits to access the storage in the chest.

I really like the bedroom, nice and simple. looks perfect for a peaceful nights sleep. I also LURVE the stainless steel lamps. Very chic. As are the white walls, this apartment would be ruined by too much colour.

i am allergic to huge tvs -- think they are the worst eyesore. this space would be so lovely if the tv were removed. there is some fun stuff going on, what with the clock in the fireplace and the towels in the whatzit, the trunk coffee table, the bar. but the tv spoils it all. your eye goes right to that huge THING despite all the other stuff.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!

Didn't know having a TV made the design space less mature. I personally don't see the problem with the TV over the fireplace. It is not like the fireplace is even usuable, so one might as well make use of the thing (I would have centered it though).

I feel like people need to get use to the fact that TVs are a part of modern living and embrace them in our homes. At least we can buy something sleek and space saving, unlike the behemoth TVs from years yonder.

Overall I love the apartment and the colour scheme. Great job

There are many many nice pieces and furniture in this place and it is a charming apartment but it needs a bit more organization and arrangement. The placement of the TV is off not because omg you have a huge TV but because it is this heavy weight over the mantle and nothing at the same level or with the same visual weight to balance it. I like that your personality and individual style are very present but the end result is a little off balanced.

I actually saw the TV and said "thank you!" out loud. Sometime i see the tours and they looks really staged or lived in my monks.
I do think you need to center the tv becuase it makes me think it's going to dive off there and then you'll be sad.

Perhaps white wall mounted shelves next to the mantel to hold the componets and yeah, the coffee table has too much stuff on it. You tellin me you have a TV that huge and you don't put your feet up? Keep it real Trilby!

There are almost no bathrooms, hallways or kitchens shown in this competition. There aren't enough photos of each place. Small doesn't just mean living and bedrooms. Maybe next year the requirement could be to show all rooms in the apartment and for the number of photos to be increased to 10. I know that it's these more awkward spaces in a small apartment that I am interested in seeing. It is good to see how people solve the space issue.

To me, this space is almost a "wow". I agree with the other posters about the TV - it just looks too large for the space. Centering it would certainly help. Since you don't have other placement options in that room, what do you think of getting a slightly smaller TV and mounting it IN the fireplace, then putting something else on top to balance it out? The white rug in the living room is in an odd place. Why not place it under the black couch and coffee table to help delineate the space? I love your trunk-as-coffee-table, but it seems too tall for your couch. Perhaps you could move it to the side and use it as a side table. Finally, some of the furniture in the living area is placed at odd angles. Perhaps you angled the items just for these photos? It jumps out to me as awkward. I do love your color palette - sometimes this much white is so sterile, but your place is interesting and cozy. Your furniture and knick-knack choices are interesting and if I were in your apartment, I'd want to touch and play with everyone. Bravo on a lovely place, and thank you for sharing!

I love the whiteness here, it looks clean & elegant to me. And I'm guessing the TV is where it is because the space is small, no? Isn't that what this whole contest is about? In any case,

I also like that there is 'stuff' around. That seems to bother other people here, but I prefer to see a place that looks like a home, not just a page out of a catalog. Nice job making the place cohesive, but not perfected to the point of dullness...

I think you've got the right idea! But I do agree that there's a bit of clutter, and I think that the TV should at least be centered about the fireplace (IMO). It has taken me a while, but I have figured out clever ways to hide cables! Trust me... it will make everything look a lot cleaner!

Love the space! Love all the white! I LOVE the two white chairs with the funky bases! There are some really great pieces here that you don't see everyday. But... It feels just a bit unrefined. The TV over the fireplace doesn't bother me (that is where mine is) in this small of a space, but if it isn't mounted, at the very lease it should be well placed, centered, with all the related equip tucked away. The cable boxes and wires detract/distract A LOT. Same with the powerstrip under the bed. There are a lot of chotchkes to dust... I get the coffee table, nice play on style.

Usually I find white-on-white color schemes too cerebral and distant, but the way you get so much warmth out of white and chrome is serious alchemy! The punctuation of black and brown notes is just right. I like the coffee table as is - the wood and vintage feel grounds the room, so that it's about your self-expression, not an homage to a particular period. Furthermore, the obsession with sleek in designland seems cut from the same cultural cloth as the obsession with thinness - you don't have to have a size 4 coffee table to have an attractive room :-)

Yes you can do some tweaking, like editing down the coffee table objects somewhat (but not too much, a little busy is part of your style), center the rug or get a bigger one so that it abuts the couch, and revisit the TV area (remove/conceal the cable box, center the TV and consider a smaller one). But the way you've gotten so much jazz out of a limited color palette outweighs the relatively minor and fixable imperfections. cheers!

Love the TV placement. This is the only place available for it I can see from your space. An amazing usage of 440 sq ft. THIS IS WHAT SMALL AND COOL IS ALL ABOUT! I agree, I like how this place has character and is not your typical magazine photo that is so contrived. I like how you have so many appointments, and yet miraculously it does not seem cluttered.

Looking forward to the kitchen and hallway photos when you are able to post more. I want to see more!!! What you are able to do with this space and with your imagination, I look forward to your other ideas. The Westinghouse oven, brilliant! My wife loves the Audrey Hepburn and those great chairs. I wonder if people realize just how SMALL 440sf is, especially when half the space is taken up by an entry hallway! I think the owner has done an amazing job both fitting all the necessities of actually LIVING COMFORTABLY in a tiny apartment (you know, like a TV large enough to enjoy?), with class and style. I love all the retro pieces in use as opposed to show, especially the linen oven :)

I totally agree with KarenH. I, too, like the coffee table as is - She is right, "it's about your self-expression, not an homage to a particular period" and I believe you meant that. It's a more ecclectic style you have. You do not limit yourself to one particular time period. I like the white and off white and your contrast with black.

I think the size of the rug is perfect for accent purposes. As for the TV, hey people, it's the new millenium, get over it. As a matter of fact, I think the TV brings the mid-century into this one that we're in right now. Remember, someone actually lives here, too. It's not just for show.

Okay, I figured out how to vote.

I registered for this site today after seeing this particular space, and just had to comment.

Super duper cool, Trilby! I have not seen any other apartments like this one, and I have to say WOW! I also like how you didn't throw fake logs in the fireplace, but kept a geometric theme - circles, squares... I also agree the trunk is ecclectic. With the plethora of mod coffee tables out there that would easily fit into this place, but at the same time would likely disappear in the midst of the other atomic pieces you have, I like how you chose wood and a different time period. I like how the french door can separate the bedroom, but still maintain an openness and lightness.

I'm not sure where in NY you're located, but it seems to me you've avoided being surrounded by buldings that block light. Cheerful and inviting, I love this place. Definitely gets my vote for SUPER COOL!

Great eclectic mix. The juxtaposition of wood floors, wood cocktail table, intermingled with the stark black and white mid-century sofa, chairs and tables excudes creative ingenuity. Love the silver appointments (ie: wall hanging, lamps, etc.) and linen closet Roaster Oven. Wonderful Retro. A good foil to encompass the character of a vintage 1840 building.

Trilby- I love your place! Your taste of decorating is so exquisite. Your place looks so inviting and it seems that you put in alot of time to make it look so nice. I like the dartboard looking mirror, the fireplace and everything else that you put in. The chairs look so comfortable and your place gives a feeling of warmth. It's AWESOME!

woooooooooooow! This is the epitome of small and cool. The quintessential example of what this contest is all about. All other apartments on here are contrived and modern store bought that you'd see anywhere. This is a sure win!

I didn't even notice the TV. Your monochrome color scheme is really nice and fun.

I want to live here, where do I sign up???

That bedroom looks so inviting, and I love that there is a second TV in there (I assume that's what it is). Probably nice not to blast the living room one to be a considerate neighbor! I imagine the halls to be interesting, but difficult to photo. Perhaps you will be a semi-finalist and we will see more.

Who could ever be depressed in a place like this? bmoc needs his head examined if he finds this place anything other than uplifting and bright.

Excellent idea using an old oven/roaster as a linen closet. Does it warm the towels?

Wonderful place. Thanks for posting!

Fine use of limited space, very Manahattan, tremendous light reflection and sense of wellbeing. Clearly the result of eclectic selection and seizing opportunities where found, then doing what feels right to fit.

Don't agree with the folks who suggest the TV is all wrong or should be centered. Prefer the asymmetry you have and the nod to 'live' the space rather than subordinating all for the sake of the 'look'.

Definitely a super cool. Congratulations.

I think some things in the living area are just spread out too far. It's not a minimal space even though it's white; there's a lot of stuff. I would group all the seating closer together, and not block the french doors; it looks like you have to move furniture every time you want to open or close them? Don't like the chest in that room, no how - more to not having an appropriate sense to the scale of the couch than anything, but I don't understand the objections to the tv. The room looks like you'd watch tv in it, or command space armies, maybe. Fire is obsolete, but radiant shapes are abundant, if scattered. Maybe the tv is too focal, I think you need more life and drama and connected features that already exist in that room, not just a few cool pictures and stuff.

Pictures of the kitchen and the bathroom would have been nice, that's a unique storage solution, by the way, but I don't know how awesome your toity might be. In the entries without kitchens or bathrooms, I just get curious how anyone lives and nourishes themselves, and whether those rooms have or have not a departure from the main style.

This place rocks! Wouldn't change a thing.

I like that the french doors can be opened or closed. Seems to me that to move a chair to close a door is not unheard of, and as forgiving in a small place such as this 440 square footer as much as a larger space! The chair didn't even occur to me probably because it is such a nice contrat against the white. I don't see that anything is in the way of another.
I disagree with K T G who may have some 'toity" and food issues. Sounds like KTG wants things spread out and yet things closer together. To move the chairs in the center would cause a sense of clutter of large objects. As for the trunk size, it really seems more interesteing to me that it is not a low coffee table, nor in perfect proportion.

This place is bright and clean looking. Love it Love it Love it!

Wow. What I love about this place is that the owner was not trying to show it as an add for a magazine photo. This is how a person in the city REALLY lives. A cable box next to the TV...now that's reality! It's probably not centered because the box couldn't fit. My guess, anyway.

Love the painting over the bed. The trunk is great for this reason - it maintains the wood theme so the space is not completly black, white, nor metallic. It blends perfectly. It serves as excellent and appropriate-for-size storage (SMALL COOL CHALLENGES, remember???).

I keep looking at the photo and finding more things I like. That's museum quality.

We have to keep in mind that this contest is about small, cool places and their challenges and problem solving and aesthetic beauty and creativity. This is what makes cool. And THIS PLACE IS SUPER COOL!

I'm not sure how connected got "issues" out of my comments, and otherwise misunderstood things. The contest and this entry (since this is where we are) fail to show the whole apartment, and since this is a design site, and a design contest on it, and an entrant in the design contest on the design site, I'm in favor of seeing solutions and cool spaces, not just cool stuff in a room. The items in the living area are spread out and could be rearranged to make a nice cozy vignette or two in an otherwise sterile space. The entrant has an eye for things, but the only evident room, it looks big enough to push some furniture together without sacrificing the ability to walk around, and also put things together that belong together for a dramatic impact instead of tame them down by spreading them out. Nothing in this space is made better by being spread farther rather than nearer. The trunk proportions to everything could even be improved by being put to use as other than a coffee table in the room, or otherwise rearranging and tightening up the room. The two white chairs with the little cabinet look cute/cool as a photo, but I don't know why anyone would sit there and shout over to the people on the sofa or other chair. It doesn't look comfortable or useful enough to sit over there unless the other seats are occupied.

And I'll say it again: I don't see an apartment here, but the floor plan says otherwise.

Woah - that's 25 of the 26 posts since "The above is my comment sent for trilby to post from me. Sorry Tril. GolfGuy." that are from people who just happened to sign up to comment on this one apartment. Maybe they're all friends, maybe it's just someone taking the time to set up a a dozen new email ids, whatever - if you're that desperate to win then go for it. But could you just settle for clicking the voting boxes and quit it with all the "oooh la la!!!!!" comments please?

PS: nice apartment. Would/will be interested to see photos of the crazy hallway to get ideas. :)

I keep looking at this because all the elements are interesting and there is a strong individualist vision that I like, but the room doesn't invite me in somehow. The living room doesn't look comfortable and I'm guessing you watch tv from bed. I like the glamor and would like you to take it over the top with a zebra patterned wool rug to unify the space and some comfy places to sit and enjoy cocktails from that great bar in the corner.

Note from Trilby:

Thank for your input K T G.

It is truly much appreciated. I assure you the rest of the apartment is quite worth seeing, but as we are only able to post 5 photos, many of us (from what I observed during my deliberation) left out the bathroom and kitchen for various reasons. For what it's worth, I deliberated much over which photos to post, as I am sure the other entrants did as well, in our efforts to give the best overall feel for our small cool spaces. My kitchen, "toity" :), and hallways are true contenders, but were hard for me to get in a photo adequately without using a wide lens, as the spaces are narrow and/or geometrically unusual. Your opinion, as others are valuable to this site and contest. Thank you for taking the time to post and give your constructive suggestions. I am really just so honored to even have my apartment be deemed worthy enough to be posted in the first place, as I moved in less than one year ago and have been looking forward to giving it a try since hearing about the contest at my housewarming party last May 2007. Again, thank you (and everyone else) for your helpful input. :)

I LOVE the fireplace! We have one in our bedroom, and I've been struggling with what to do with it (the existing brass screen is rusty and the rubber seal behind it is filthy.)

The apartment just floats with all the white and the shine. Coffee table would have been better if it fit in. Have you thought of painting it white? There's got to be more direction about what each picture should be about. There's so much we don't know about the apartment--would have loved o see the kitchen.

What a crazy mix of stuff.
And that unit holding the towels:
"I'll have mine at 70 degrees please"
:)

Seriously.
Good effort for just over 400 sq. ft.
But most of the criticism is warranted.
They're not insults, just suggestions on how to make it better.
We should be proud to show how we managed to rise to a design challenge; rather than show we didn't have the creative motivation.

Cute, but needs tweaking.

I love color, so all-white/cream homes always feel a little to sterile and boring to me, but you've done a GREAT job pulling things together. Usually only multi-millionaires in the Hamptons with designers at every fingertip can make white feel cozy (picturing Diane Keaton's house in Something's Gotta Give).

All the little knickknacks give it such personality - wow! I know people have their criticisms, but pulling together an eclectic place like this without looking like a crazy cat lady requires SO much more time and talent than yanking some "designerly" McCoffee Tables and McSofas from (take your pick) Room & Board, Crate & Barrel, or DWR out of a box.

What a terrific floor plan. I love the color scheme. People are so afraid of white but they just have to remember it's a color to. Love the two white chairs in the corner. Reminds me of a 1950's cruise ship. Love the trunk as a coffee table. In 440 sq ft you have to incorporate storage no matter the aesthetic.

So many comments on the TV. I have no issue with it being over the fireplace. You hang artwork/mirrors over fireplaces. A flat screen TV is like artwork. It's just artwork that changes with every click of the remote. My only suggestion would be to center it on the mantel or possibly hang it on the wall.

Mostly...Great job. I'm jealous of that floor plan. Such CHARACTER!

Just "wow" when you look at the beautiful white which just pops.

Pehaps you could mount the tv in the corner where the painting and star mirror currently reside.. above the bar cart.
Then move the mirror and painting somewhere else. Perhaps one of the things over the fireplace.

Just a thought.

Interesting use of space.
Comments on fireplace, me? I would center it and put the lower somewhere not obtrusive. LOVE the clock/art piece in the fireplace.

I agree with needing more height. The shelf to the left of the fireplace could be higher, hold the travel things and the cable boxes. Could make things look less busy.

Or what AT4H said, put the TV in the corner.
That would actually make viewing from the couch and the chairs better.

Like the white and the silver accents. Clean looking.

Love the midcentury modern furniture! Interesting floor plan. Please do something about that floating rug. Sorry it's my pet peeve, gotta have a bigger rug to fit the scale of that room. Love the silver and whites in the living room - just looks cluttered with the placement of some of the pieces and all of the smaller items. The bedroom - the painting is centered on the wall instead of over the bed, makes me feel like I'm a bit lopsided when looking at it.

I would have preferred larger scale furniture for that space. As it is it all seems small and delicate. If I were there I don't think I'd feel comfortable. I think I'd be afraid of breaking something.
