Name: Emily Gurstelle
Company: Room & Board
Location: St. Paul, MN
Favorite Weblink: I love Cribcandy.com. It gives a little taste of what people in the online design community are chatting about each day.
Profession: Emily comes to us from our contest sponsor. A professional writer and editor, AND a fan of design blogs, Emily heads up marketing writing for Room & Board and is a long time resident of the Minneapolis/St Paul region. Welcome, Emily!

Best Use of Space:
One of my favorite places is the Riverview Theater in Minneapolis. Tucked into a quiet neighborhood, this independent, single-screen theater has barely changed since it opened in 1948. The marquee and lobby make me smile each time I visit (and they have the best popcorn in town). I love that they updated what was really necessary—the technology—and kept all the original details that made movie-going feel like a special event.

Da Judges:

Midwest: Jan Parr, Editor, Chicago Home & Garden Magazine
-

Southwest: Jean Aw, founder of Not Cot at Notcot.org
-

Northwest: Philip Wood, founder of CITIZEN:citizen
-

East: Michi Yanagishita of Front Studio
Hmm, women seriously outnumbering the men in the ranks of the judges... just sayin'.

A personal plea to Emily from Room and Board - we NEED one of your stores in the Washington DC area. I'm tired of going up to NYC every time I want to order some of your furniture. ;)
You have a great online catalog but I'm the type that needs to touch (and sit on) furniture before I order it.
HELP!

Yay! A Lady judge. I like your green jacket. It's very smart casual.
Uh, and that theater is pretty cool too.
There's a great book called:
Lost Twin Cities / Larry Millett. St. Paul : Minnesota Historical Society Press, c1992. ix, 336 p. : ill. ; 28 cm.
Some beautiful TWIN CITIES buildings were destroyed in the early 60s due to urban renewal. :(
Check it out. It's a great book.

I'm liking what is going on in the background of Emily Gurstelle's picture. Black and white photos, snippets of everyday things, that take on importance when photographed in parts. Big white mats, big white frames.
I swear, I cannot hang a picture level with another picture. And someday I just know I will get one of those light-up leveling devices and then just hot glue gun my wall pictures to the wall using the leveling device to keep them level.
Well, it's ONE solution.

I second Marknarlington's call for a DC Room and Board. I would order so much more if I didn't have to wait for trips to other cities to preview pieces for my home.

I used to live, literally, 2 blocks away from that theater. Took advantage of it all the time. It's my favorite theater in the Twin Cities, too! Nice to see a fellow MN as one of the judges. YEAH! :)
