Small Cool 2009: Chau's Bushwick Loft
Small Division #20

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: Chau + French Bulldog"Brooklyn" + Teacup Chihuahua "Munchkin"
Location: Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York City
Size: 1,127 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? I like the open floor plan of this loft. Everything is in one room, yet at the same time there is a distinctive separation for each room.

Give Chau a THUMBS UP if you think this home belongs in the finals!

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? Since it is an open loft, everything little thing has to match with the rest of the space. I overcame the challenge through living in this space for awhile and bringing in one piece at a time. There was some trial and error.

Give Chau a THUMBS UP if you think this home belongs in the finals!

Very creative and eclectic! I love the shades separating the bedroom from the rest of the space.

Using mini blinds as a room divider is smart. I like how adjustable they make the space.

Overall this place is as close to perfect as they come.

i love how you continued the backsplash above the cabinets, and use the window blinds as a room divider for your bedroom. i can't put my finger on why the 2nd pic looks so busy...b/c it's very organized.

what is that red and white pattern around the front door?

I love pic #1 with all the deep rich colors and textures...
...and it's all gone in pics #2 & 3 with all the white.

If you had continued that slate grey color all the way around the apartment and down the entry hall - you'd have a winner.

Very creative. Awesome. Big open floorplans can be hard to work with - so much furniture has to 'float' - it can be hard to create a feeling of rooms but I like what you've done here.

Wow. What a study in contrasts. I just finished looking at the Small/Cool pics for the people who are quite literally living in a tent and went directly to this. Talk about different!

Love the space. It's gorgeous. The kitchen backsplash is beautiful!

this place is so cool that i'd never leave if i lived here. you have made some very bold and risky choices and yet it fits together perfectly. your apt is very inspiring not only to look at, but i imagine to live in as well.

it looks like the home of an artist.

p.s. i wish you left the two dogs in one of the pictures.

Where'd you get the ceiling fans? Though I think it is underwhelming in such a large space, I also feel that it is a great idea.

i love all the bright light from those big windows! you have chosen colors that really catch the eye and make it a really fun space using the light that you get from those big windows! i really love it!
the use of the antlers and the animal print rug is really cool too...it adds a feel of being in a cabin, but you are really in brooklyn!!!

I think the most difficult places to decorate are open lofts since you have to create rooms. This is well done because every photo looks like a seperate room, but flows nicely together.

1. Love the bedroom, blinds as space separators? In most places- stooopid, in your place- genius.

2. In your living room, are those table fans repurposed as ceiling fans? Also genius.

3. Does anyone know the design history of the five-bulb lamp on the bottom shelf on the orange wall?

Thank you everyone for your vote and comments.

Ok here it is.
So the red and white pattern around the front door is just dark pink paint that I did by hand. It was a mistake that turned out to be pretty cool.

The ceiling fans is from Ebay.

The coffee table I got from the Chelsea Flea market. It's suppose to be a Vladimir Kagan.

The sofa I custom order from this company in LA. I don't remember the name.

The round pillows are from Century 21, a discount designers department store here in NY.

You did an amazing job! This is a pretty large space for being so open, but you did a great job making everything feel separate. I love your half painted red wall. I was almost confused when I looked at your floor plan because I see that you bed is actually in the Alcove... I would have liked to see what you have set up in the "bedroom"

I think it is very awesome! But I'm not quite sure why Janet's peaceful modern has gotten a lot of flack for being 1200 square feet. They have two people living there, but this is 1100 for one person?? Seems pretty big.

I don't get it. According to the blueprint, there's two bathrooms? Next to each other? The original bedroom is where the paino is, correct?
I really like the kitchen, but overall don't see a "theme" or unifying schematic.
